Up where I live here in Maine, our fire departments in the local area work with the towing & bus companies, and hold trainings (even the public can attend, if they wish), on emergency exits & extrications, if any bus were to be involved in a heavy crash. Training is usually annually, or Bi-annually. Just throwing that out there. Great video!

Opening side windows are interesting idea. In most European buses one must break the glass with a hammer, which gets stolen all the time. This biggest innovation was to attach the hammer with a string.

Hi James Thanks for the heads up for a DOT officer asking you how to operate the emergency hatches and windows. I will defiantly check them out in our super stretches and our party buses. In N.Y. State we are always getting approached by DOT at all concerts and sporting events. Most of the time they only check our paperwork and stickers on the vehicle. But a few months ago I got a level two inspection by a State trouper and boy did she put me through an inspection. So again thanks for the heads up. Take care and safe travels to you and your company.

Another interesting video! Here in Scotland we have the main door and an emergency or midship door on the opposite side of the vehicle. This is sometimes just a small door with foot holes in the side of the coach. Never seen the opening side windows, here it’s a small emergency hammer to smash out the windows, newer vehicles are coming with a red window punch button on the glass which will break the window. We also have the roof hatches, do you have emergency engine shut off switches? We have them at the rear either under the engine hatch or on the outside of the bus at the rear, which can be a pain on local busses with kids pushing them as a joke 🤦🏻‍♂️

Public transit buses are very similar in Hungary, with two exceptions: the side windows don't open, they need to smashed out with a hammer provided by each designated window, and all buses with a rear glass window count as exits as well. There are no differences between city transit and coach buses, as the regulations apply the same way. Articulated buses have at least 3 roof exits.

When I drove I always did a short safety speech. Depending on the group I'd dare someone to get up and do the flight attendant two-finger pointing at the exits thing but no one ever did. Most important I think was how to dump the air pressure on the door to get out. I'd demo that and put the mic by the valve if possible to drive the point home.

When I was driving a school bus we did emergency exit drills a couple of times a year. I always let the kids open every emergency exit they wanted during the drills. That accomplishes two goals. One, they actually operate the emergency exit so they understand exactly how it works and feels if there was an actual emergency and two, it gets the curiosity out of their minds so they don't feel tempted to try it while you're driving. When I drove a charter bus we didn't have a video but every driver had to do a pre-trip presentation pointing out all the emergency exits to the passengers like a flight attendant. Then I went to driving transit. If you're on a transit bus you basically are on your own.

Hi Kieron. Thanks for your kind words and for posts comment. What are buses are in our facility we usually keep them indoors. We have three massive heated garages where we can keep our fleet shielded from the elements. Unfortunately that's not the case when they stay overnight at a hotel or far away from home. Then yes we usually keep them plugged in if there's an outlet available. But for the most part they don't have a problem starting up even during the winter time unless it gets really cold.

I actually got to open an emergency exit on a school bus while I was in grade school. Twice a year, they parked a couple of school buses in the parking lot at school and each class went on to a bus and we had a demonstration on how to use the emergency exits and what to do in an emergency on the bus. When we were getting seated on the bus one time, I deliberately chose the row right behind the emergency exit just in the hopes that they would choose me to open that door. Yep I got lucky.

Well no. Not a full bus. I didn't say or mean to imply full bus. I should have been more clear on that. DOT inspections happen a lot after your passengers get off the bus at the destination. I can't comprehend what there is not a system of seatbelts for passengers in tour/charter buses !? As well , in school buses nowadays and a storage space for students above their seats or underneath . I think it was the idiotic statement that " buses have fewer accidents " compared to oither vehicles . How many years in the past have they hired school bus drivers . That were elderly / fragile and had medical condtions that should have prevented them from drivng one . I wish there was a follow up as to these students injuries and likely disabilties that will plaque them for the rest of their lives . As Greyhound also has continuing issues in accidents , it seems . What they paid their drivers in the 1980s was even horrible .
