So I really admire your bravery to put yourself into this program. You are dealing with a foreign language and foreign customs all on your own. I think this experience will benefit you in so many ways as you go into your future. Just think all your classmates have a 16 year head start learning German. I predict by Christmas you will be very comfortable speaking German.

That is true and I thought the same...please don' t regard your stay as a mistake or what ever and pls don' t stop learning German, because you were doing so good and yes, your are really looking very pretty and very German as well...actually, I guess that your stay would have been so great if that pandemic would not have "kicked" you out...do you have German ancestry? Come back, Caroline! 🙂It is much better now, even the bus drivers don' t get angried if you "forgot" your mask and we can go "topless" into all supermarkets and everywhere again, except clinics or doctors. Me as well, I suffered from obesity and overeating so much since the beginning of 2020 and I gained so much weight that 1. I had to buy new clothes (almost everything!!!) and 2. began to suffer from depressions as well and even had to take pills against it which never happened before in my whole life...so sad that you came here during those awful times...believe me, Germany can be so exciting and so much fun without Covid!!! 🥰🥰🥰

This was an interesting day at school :). If you want to film more at school, you may want to go ahead and ask teachers if they allow it and explain to them that you're vlogging for your YT channel in connection with the CBYX program. It shows initiative and real interest in your exchange program and I'm sure some of them will support it. On the other hand, Germans tend to be very big on their privacy rights so you may have to get their consent of filming them in advance, including your classmates. Good luck and have fun :)

Just hang in there with school, and German online classes! It can be tough, and overwhelming. It'll get better as time goes on. I promise! I am German, and have spent a year as an exchange student in New Zealand when I was 17. Here are some ideas: Talk a lot in German, sing along to German songs, find German books you like and read them, ask many questions, it's ok to make mistakes, watch movies (with subtitle if you want - either in English or in German), make your own German phrase book that has things in it you care to talk about, have fun...did I mention have fun!

Hey I don't know if you are aware of this but it is actually illigal in Germany to post footage of other people without their cosent. It is allowed if more than 20 people are in the frame, then it counts as a crowd. But you can really get in trouble here for things like posting the people on your language class etc. so please be aware of that if you do this again.

Why not take the time and offer her a way to check up on that, as it entails so much more than you mentioned? @caroline ruby the reason the rules at your school (and every other German school) are so strict is the "Recht am eigenen Bild", which is based on the "Persönlichkeitsrechte", which is covered in article 1 of our constitution. You are not allowed (or only in very specific instances) to take the picture of anyone without their consent (we're not even talking about publication here). Of course your mates entering the picture could and should be taken as consent, BUT they're minors and therefore have no say in the matter (parental consent would be needed). I doubt anyone would actually would care, though. One thing to be VERY careful of, is, however, making a voice recording of your teacher. This also falls under privacy protection law and as the schools have to take care that lessons are a "safe place" for everyone, they have to be extra strict with following up on that stuff. Please take care not to make audio or video recordings during lessons, as the school HAS to make you trouble for that...
@carolineruby

I am aware! That is why all of my footage doesn’t include my teachers, and only my friends. I asked for their consent to post the video and I checked with my host family before posting as well :) thank you for looking out for me though!

Hey Caroline! I never had the chance to study abroad, but I'm happy for you that you can do so. It's fascinating how well you are speaking German. Also me, I understood everything. I learned french about two years ago (till I made my A-level) and I just found it great. I really enjoyed it. To come back to you: Maybe Joana mentioned it or maybe you heard, that German is one of the most difficult languages. So, congrats! You did quite a good job! I would have been to Colorado or Pittsburgh for studying at school, if I had the chance. I don't know why I like Colorado and Pittsburgh that much (thought I've never been to the US so far) but they both seem pretty lovely places to visit. I hope you can enjoy the time here in Germany. Ich wünsche dir alles Gute! Greetings from Austria Andreas

3:34: 2. Es gibt keinen Zusammenhang zwischen molarer Masse und Temperatur. I don't know what that was about, but masses never change by temperature, only by decomposition. What however changes with the temperature is the density and therefore the volume. You were referring to frost damages of roads, but another nice example is the fact that hot air balloons float. The volume of ideal gases is direct proportional to temperature, known as Gay-Lussac's Law. And molecular mass is just the mass of one mole of a molecule. And as a mole is just a very large number (6.022x10²³), this is unaffected by temperature as well. Ah, and in 3 you confused the hydrogens with the heteroatoms. ;-)

Ive seen other students back when i went to school and they could choose the language for that exact reason ... the school system in germany and austria are very challenging but if i remember right special for tests it was allowed for thosd students to ask for one in mothertongue just to make sure they understand every question right.. of course exception is german itself..

Fun fact about popcorn. In the first days of cinema, popcorn was not a thing. The classical theaters, who showed the silent films, didn't allow food during the film. Films during these days were entertainment for the educated people because you had to read the films (we all know these text banners in silent films). And popcorn as a general snack in the society was not easy to produce. With the invention of the popcorn machine for the public market, it was easy to produce popcorn for everyone, and it became a popular cheap snack. Yes, popcorn machines were invented in the late 19th century, but from the invention to the common run of mankind, it takes a while. In parallel, the sound film became more and more. The sound film against the silent film has the big plus that also people who can't read can watch the film. And theaters with sound films tended to give their audience the ability to eat during the film. Popcorn was a popular choice for the companies. And during that time, the Great Depression hit the USA very hard. Many of the classical theaters closed, and the cinemas with sound films and food left. It also because popular to use butter and salt on your popcorn because these ingredients were available during the depression. This is the reason why we have popcorn in the cinema, and the USA have butter and salt in the popcorn. As far as I remember, popcorn in the cinema was invented somewhere in the 70s in Germany, but I don't know why it's sweet. My personal guess is, that sweets were very popular in the 50s and 60s. After the war, the people enjoyed eating cakes and other sweet stuff, which is a culinary contrast to the war. And if you're into the habit of eating such snacks, you want sweet popcorn. But as mentioned, this is my personal guess. And btw. I wrote the popcorn fun fact from my mind. Some time details could be incorrect. :D

I’m a 16 year old girl and I live in one of the biggest cities in germany and my English is not that well but i can talk abt everything with someone yk. My sister moved out and we have a room free but my parents would never allow that someone lives here for like a couple of months. But I hope one day they will. I could show her how life as a teenager in germany is , she would go on the best housepartys she ever went, i would show her my City , she would have so many friends and it WOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT be boring. To learn German as well, take a look for Films or Serie which are in german. I like it to see your Channel and listening. Thats how i pratice my Skill in English. Versuch mit deiner Homesister möglichst viel Deutsch zu reden, nur so klappts. Das is halt ne schwere Sprache und grad die ganzen Dialekte oder wie man was schreibt and know the Meaning of it is so hard to teach. Learning by doing ;)

Did you know any German at all before going on exchange? If not, it sounds like you’re doing amazing! I don’t speak German lol, but it sounds good.

No, unfortunately I came here knowing zero German, but now I’ve found effective ways to learn and it’s improving!

The rules differ from federal state to state depending on the Covid situation and decision made by the individual governments. Schooling falls under the authority of the states and not under the regulations and legislative powers of the all-German parliament and administration.
