Magnificent! She looks great! I was sad to see you firing on gas and not coal like in the other video. Still, it's a superb boiler!

Ha! Yes, I did use gas this time. This was a test run and I wanted to be sure all was well with the engine first and foremost. Coal firing requires a lot of attention and I wanted to focus on the engine more so than the boiler. Thanks for the comments. There'll be more coal burning soon. :)

Hello John, Good work with lubricator. But engine works too much noisy. Axis is crooked too. Look at... Stefan,
@1977JohnJ9 жыл бұрын
+stefanekanek Correct! The "knock" is from wear in the crosshead, I found after some investigation. I'm not sure which "axis" you mean, but if it's the crankshaft (where the flywheel is mounted) it's quite crooked! No plans at the moment to fix it though. This is an old and HEAVILY used engine and these aren't the most precise instruments in any condition... still fun to watch, though! Thanks for the comments. :)

Just ordered a engine on ebay, do you remember what size o rings you installed in your engine and where you got them at?
@1977JohnJ9 жыл бұрын
+tony killip Yes. They're #018 silicone O-rings. I got them on ebay and only paid a few dollars for a bag of 100! I did a video on the O-rings that shows a little bit of what you'll find inside that cylinder.

Who sells these engines on Ebay? I just saw one a couple days ago and was gonna bid on it then it vanished! These are beautiful little engines!
@1977JohnJ8 жыл бұрын
These were manufactured in Poland and used as teaching instruments in schools there. I'm guessing they aren't used much anymore and are probably being auctioned off, sold, or just thrown away so they come up for auction on ebay pretty frequently, usually by eastern European sellers.

***** I already knew their origin and history, I asked if there was a certain guy or dealer that has several of them or if they're just being sold one at a time by random people in Europe.

lovely engines indeed, only yours doesn't sound quite right. too much knocking. i have one myself and it sounds a lot more like a train. great sound. perhaps your timing is off a tad. thank you for posting.
@1977JohnJ9 жыл бұрын
The timing is a bit late in this video (as I received it). Add to that the fact that the big end and main bearings are pretty worn and it does make a lot of noise. I've since repositioned the eccentric so that the engine actually runs in the opposite direction (to suit certain accessories) and timed it for earlier admission... it's much smoother/quieter but still rattles a bit at the bearings. Rough around the edges these lumps but still lots of fun to run. Thanks for your comment! :)

surprising how powerful and what little steam pressure is needed to run these behemoths :D
