well... if we had school lunches they would probably look like this, but actually school usually ends at 2pm so we eat at home! (there are some schools that give lunch but they're probably private or at least not where I live) My school for example has a bar where they sell pizzette (like mini pizzas), arancini etc for a snack between lessons but also coffee, cappuccino, croissants etc for breakfast!

As an italian i can confirm that the dishes you made there are often present in the school menus but you'd get only one of them and you can't choose what you get, it depends on the day, also the ingredients for them are nowhere near locally sourced, they arrive in trays from a third party company (not the school) and usually the quality is really bad, in some rare cases the food is actually good but the main reason for it is that the lunch ladies add salt, vinegar, oil and other stuff to the food when it arrives
@jene9755

Still 1000% better than what the kids get served in the US. I grew up in Germany. Our school lunch was also city kitchen but compared to the crap the kids get here it was downright healthy and seemed organic and locally sourced. 😂 The stuff here you can't even call food.

I was born and raised in a catholic orphanage in Italy. It was ran by nuns and I lived there until I was almost 8 years old. One thing about Italian food in school was that one of the classes we took involved gardening and a lot of our food was hand picked by the nuns and students to be used in meals later on. I truly believe I eat the way I do because of this. It spoiled me as I’ve been a “food snob” for many years.

As an Italian I can confirm, we eat a portion of pasta, of course bread, some veggies and the chicken is pretty frequent when you eat at school but do not expect those to look good, I’m serious when they serve you those things you would rather starve than eat that. The biggest problem is the smell, probably 90% or so of the food you are eating at lunch was cooked at least 50 kilometers away and brought to your and other schools in some big black containers, that’s where the smell comes from, and then it was warmed up by putting it in hot water, which is soaked up by the container mentioned before. Is not a bad lunch, it has all the nutrients and so on, so basically just eat while pinching your nose

I remember watching the travel channel in the late 90's or early 00's and in Italy saw that they take a midday siesta where workers have a glass of wine, eat, and have a nap if needed. As an American who was working 16 hours a day with no breaks along with an awesome staff I managed I decided they all needed a siesta! I found the best Italian bakery in Boston. I would buy beautiful pastries. Purchased a really nice coffee and expresso machine, and allowed anyone that was tired to take a one or more nap in a comfy room. Any staff that threatened to tell would be immediately transferred to another location. My supervisor was absolutely cool with this because it created almost no call outs, happier staff, and amazing work ethic. I was one of the most successful managers for 8 years until I was offered a higher paying position closer to my home. Yep! I also did the same thing there and they loved me! Italy has it figured out and the food is just as far from American Standard Diet as it gets. Glad to see these students are eating so well. Hope America can offer something close to this one day.

I'm italian and I NEVER SAW a school lunch like that. From my school it depended on days (you couldn't choose your menu) but usually it was microwaved pasta, tasteless vegetables or polenta with sausages and fruits, but I cannot forget the horrifing soup with legumes. Really, no one really wanted to eat that "thing", but the school gave us "crostini" and we put them in the soup like they were gravestone.

@@areswalker5647 yeah, Campania. You give meaning to food, as you should. In Friuli schools and the agency that cooked the food only wanted the most income possible with the least expense. A friend of mine suffered from anorexia and I couldn't even try to convince her to eat the food, because honestly, I barely could, so it just gave her an excuse to not eat.

I like that rule - no deep fried food. I grew up in Canada and the area I grew up in is very much an area where most of us brought our lunch. It wasn’t until high school that we had a cafeteria. So in elementary school (kindergarten through grade eight, or from 4-5 until about 13-14 years old) we had pizza day on Friday, where on Tuesdays, you brought your $2 or whatever it was and you can have a slice or two (depending on what you paid for) and it was delivered hot to the classrooms where we ate lunch on Friday! Then we had milk orders where you got milk everyday at lunch, regular milk or chocolate milk, and again, your parents had to send money with you. I never had the milk but I did have pizza every other week. High school had a cafeteria and they had meals but served fries and chicken nuggets and poutine (fake, without cheese curds, but shredded mozzarella cheese) and had cookies/biscuits and chips/crisps (I now live in the U.K., so have to represent both!) and they sold candy and fruit and did proper breakfast, either oatmeal and fruit and yogurt, or a fried breakfast. I brought my lunch Mondays through Thursdays and had lunch at the cafeteria on Friday. On days I had volleyball practice early, I had breakfast before school at the cafeteria. I would have loved meals like Italy!

I have an Italian exchange student in my American school. She was shocked by our lunch choices. When we asked her what she ate, she said her school didnt give them lunch at all and they only ate 2 meals

That's because only kindergarten and elementary school have afternoon class in Italy so only they have cafeteria lunch time. Middle school and high school last till 2.00 pm so the kids just go home to eat with their families

They truly care about their students

Unfortunately this is only partly true. First we have to pay for school lunches, even though it is subsidized and you pay according to income. But schools are poorly financed in other areas and fall apart, sometimes there isn't even toilet paper. 😢

this isnt true btw, the italian school system is one of the worst school systems in the world. i did elementary, middle school and now high school. we literally never get a break and they basically teach us the same stuff. they do NOT care about our mental health whatsoever

I love this series. You always make a meal from some of the richest private schools of a random country and the people respond like they think its public

I love baltic food too much. I couldn't live in a Baltic country because I'd be massively over weight. 😅

Omg this reminds me of Portugal 🇵🇹! In Portugal 🇵🇹 they love their kids too we always ate soup as a starter and the main would always delicious traditional Portuguese food and the desert was always fruit but jelly or moose on occasions like children’s day

My uncle (who has been to prison because the jail was full at the time) said that the way I described modern American school lunch was the same as the prison food.
