Did you go to private school, or are you just middle-aged? Because having only been to state schools, this is definitely the sort of thing we were served. Chicken nuggets, turkey twizzlers, smilies, pizza, sausage and chips, and then some token vegetables to keep the parents happy (beans counted as a vegetable in those days). I saw the menu for my youngest sister’s school, in the post-Jamie Oliver days, and it was still pizza/sausage and chips/fish and chips some days, just they’d also have lasagna and roast dinners thrown in. Also actual veg, like broccoli and such. God, I’d kill for a square of school-days traybake pizza

As a fellow Brit, if you were served all that for school dinner, you were at a private school. My comp school dinner was plainly cooked sliced meat, piece of bread/boiled potato and a boiled veg, sometimes a bland, protein free curry, and soggy fish and chips on a Friday. Followed by a square of plain cake and/or a ladle of wobbly custard.

That's bloody luxurious compared to what my old secondary school and college served. Both gave everyone food poisoning, but the food at the secondary school was absolutely grim. Everything was cooked beyond recognition, bland and cold by the time we actually got to it. My college, well, the food is hot, but that's about all it's got going for it. They almost always manage to give people food poisoning with everything they prepare, but anything they buy in is a safe bet.

as a brit i can say that we got a choice out of a few meals for the day as you had to book your meal a few days before , but anyway the choices were different almost every day but have the same kind of meals it would look like this : meals: curry jacket potato (baked potato) fish fingers pizza ( and we actually got square slices and then the new chief came and we got triangle they were a pretty good size) sunday roast (in the middle of the week) toad in the hole and many others but that’s all i can remember , you got to choose your sides when you were there like chips (fries) peas sweet corn and carrots. you also got to choose your dessert when u were there like jelly , yogurt, birthday cake ,chocolate cake, brownies,fruit and many others i have a feeling my school was pretty good with food what do you think?

I had to suffer through English school lunches during my exchange year abroad and by the end of my second term I stopped eating the food and lived of apples, bananas, milk and porridge (that I made myself because the one in the cafeteria sucked). So yeah that should give you a good impression of how good it was. I couldn’t bare the smell of fried food for a solid year after coming back and I to this day despise chestnut mushrooms because I swear to god every single vegetarian meal had them in it and they were never good. Also the ridiculousness of calling chips/fries breakfast and giving out crisps/chips as a lunch (part of the lunch) I will never get over. For the confused folk, it was a boarding school so obviously I ate at school and didn’t have someone prepare meals for me. Also this school had, according to their website, award winning catering soooo I don’t want to imagine how bad food at other schools was. Furthermore, we were only allowed/able to go into town on Saturday and Sunday and we were only allowed to order takeout Friday-Sunday.

We had food from different cultures every day and it was on a two week rotation so week 1 was different from week 2. We also had a slushy machine during summer, and we had freshly made brownies, cupcakes, and apple pies which were heavenly! I miss the school so much, because it was so good!

The north is different specifically Pendle/ Lancashire We almost always had pack lunches cause school dinners were too expensive but it usually consists of some kind of soup/pasta or pizza or jacket potato. We never got fish fingers. The sides were nonexistent. For pudding it was either a brownie with ice cream/custard or a digestive. For a drink it was a juice burst or chocolate/strawberry milk or water. That's it if you could afford the 3.50 for lunch on your ID card

My school lunch actually tastes divine, there are 3 main hot options which are always different. If you don’t like those, you can get a freshly made sandwich or you can go to the pasta/salad bar. Obviously there is an option of jacket potato, you can get the normal baked potato or a sweet potato. Lastly you can have soup. For desserts there are 4 options. One hot dessert, two cold, or a yogurt. Lastly, you can have fruit on the side, you can pick from an apple, orange or banana. (Obviously I go to a private school)

Dinner 1. Jacket potatoes cheese and beans, or without beans if you want. 2. Fish finger, mash potatoe, peas and carrots. 3. Gamon instead of the fish fingers. 4. Pie filled with potatoe and other vege's. 5. Flan an egg based dish, again with peas or other vege. All these may come with mash potatoe, or roast potatoe, obviously with jacket potatoe, you don't get mash with jacket potato, as it is already potatoe and quite filling. I personally liked UK school meals. Dessert: a nice pudding, e.g. chocolate cake, chocolate cake with fudge, angel delight, rice pudding, chocolate concrete, lemon love cake (personal pick, this tasted bomb, but pretty much impossible to find the damn recipe. Haven't found it yet, but will eventually pay a dinner lady to give me the recipe). The desserts come with custard if they are a cake.

Growing up in a British school, jacket potato with beans was all ways an option However fish fingers was only on Fridays, so you would only get one or the other For desert every day it was fruit such a apples, oranges, and sometimes watermelon, On Fridays it was called 'treat Friday' so we had a choose between ice cream or fruit Sometimes itstead of ice cream it was sponge though. You where pretty spot on except for the fact you put 2 meals on that plate 😂😂😂 Love ur vids btw

as a fellow British person that is half true normally my school you have 3 option you can only chose one it would be jack potato (with beans cheese or tuna) then two other normal meals and snack would be yogurt mainly or (apple, banana, sometimes in primary rasinins)

My secondary school dinners (2009-2014) were actually really good and always made fresh & from scratch! Sounds like I was very lucky. Choice of: hot pasta pot + cheese & mini baguette 🥖, selection of sandwiches / wraps, salad bar, hot meal + dessert + juice. Mains consisted of jacket potato w/ cheese/beans (always), chilli con carne, chicken korma curry, fish or chicken & chips w/ peas or beans, lasagna & wedges, spaghetti & meatballs🍝, sausages & mash, roast dinner, cottage pie, etc… the only thing i disliked was their cauliflower cheese! Dessert: hot sponge (vanilla,toffee or chocolate) pudding w/cream or custard, shortbread biscuits, flapjack, fruit salad; (🍇🍈 🍉 🍓 ) sometimes iced buns or doughnuts. 11am Break time: we had a choice of plain & chocolate croissants🥐(which were still warm if you were early 🤤), cheese scone, English muffin pizzas 🍕, cheese salad wraps, toasted tea cake w/butter, flapjacks, chocolate shortbread biscuit, fruit: 🍎 🍏 🍊 🍌 . Sometimes iced buns or doughnuts. You could even buy cereal or toast (10p!) before school.

Man, I wish British meals were like this. In my old school, we were only served plain overcooked pasta. The pasta didn’t have any sauce, we just had to eat it plain. And we were lucky if we were able to get at least one decent piece of fruit.

British schools are very similar to Australian schools since, we have houses too and some of them are named after plants (jacaranda, kurrajong, banksia, waratah) but that’s my daughters school who uses plants I’m not sure if others do too.

Ugh, I have such grim memories of school dinners in the '90s, lol. Lots of very grey meat, mashed potato and horrendously overcooked veggies (always peas, carrot and sweetcorn). In '96, my primary school started a fresh fruit drive, where this really sweet older lady went round to each classroom with a cart full of all kinds of fruit that we could buy and eat during morning tea. Unfortunately, that became quite disruptive, so that then changed to the cart being in the dinner hall during morning tea and lunchtime for us to buy from. Before that, the only fruits I'd tried were banana and apple, and I wasn't too fond of either. That fruit cart was a fantastic idea and I still eat all the fruits that program introduced me to, now about to turn 35. It also encouraged kids to ask their parents to buy their favourite fruits to eat at home, so it had an impact beyond the school gate, too. I'd love to see programs like that brought back!
