Oh yeah, 2 more things: Doug was in 6th grade, which was elementary school in this. And I think they meant detention hall to be a Recovery Room/ISS, which we had at all of my schools at all grade levels. Oh and that "time will pass--will you?" banner? It's real. I remember one of my high school teachers had it in their classroom. And I've heard kids chant "fight!" too.

The closest experience I can personally think of to this was one time during lunch break, these two bullies kept jokingly pushing me into the wall, literally trapping me in the corner for about 10 minutes or so before the librarian threw all 3 of us out. My friend saw the whole thing (why he didnt try to help me i don't know...but anyway) and argued with him about me getting kicked out but the librarian didn't want to listen. Outside the literally it continued for the rest of the lunch break ending with one final hard hockey-like check, i went flying into the brick wall and got my elbow up just in time to save myself from whacking my head. This friend finally got up to come help seeing the massive blue bruise i had on my elbow went with me to the principal's office to report it. The principal was FURIOUS! I mean he had steam shooting out his ears. The thing is just a few days earlier in another school in the province (I'm in Canada) a kid actually died under similar circumstances, he didnt get his elbow up and hit his head. Both of those kid spent the rest of the year in after school detention every day (about a month and a half) and the librarian was reprimanded for not handling it properly. He claimed he thought all 3 of us were "playing around" and were being disruptive. No idea if this is why, but we had a new librarian the next year. 🤔 And speaking of brains over violence I've only ever won 2 fights in my entire life: both with minimum violence: I was about to get pounded and I pretty much channeled the 3 stooges: Me: Hey knucklehead, see those? (Holding up 2 fingers) Him: yeah? Poked him in the eyes and successfully ran away. 😅 The other, I had just finished eating my lunch in the cafeteria which was a tupperware container of chef boyardee ravioli, this kid steals my lunchbag, i ran after him pinned him against the wall and ordered him to give it back, he did. But after i turned around he clubbed me in the back as he ran past me so i swung the lunchbag at him, the bag wasnt fully closed and the tupperware container burst....tomato sauce all over him in front of everyone to a huge laugh. He was so embarassed and ran away😅 teacher pretty much let me get away with that one seeing as I was just defending myself but did ask me to get a mop from the janitor's office and clean up the trail of tomato sauce he left. Worth it! 😅

I also grew up watching this show and have weirdly vivid memories of the same moments in this episode you did - Roger and Patty arguing, the Klotzilla fantasy, etc. I loved the show and remember watching many of these episodes over and over which is no doubt why it stuck, but I still found every moment of your reaction relatable. I even joined in on the last part of the opening theme exactly when you did. 😂 I just find it interesting that our history with and nostalgia for the show seem so relateable, there must just be something about this show or shows like it that just resonate with you in a specific way as a kid.

That does happen though. When I was in middle school they would often punish everyone rather than the one troublesome kid. The idea being we'd all turn against the kid who was getting us in trouble. But so what? We can't do anything to them without getting in trouble ourselves...

Honestly, Ms. Wingo is a pretty OK teacher. It's just this episode where she's at her worst. I agree that she was way too harsh, but I think it was just this episode is where she was bad. Mr. Bone is one strict vice principal, normally he would have been in the room, but I guess it was all for the plot. Nice that you remember Doug. Hope to see more

I thought for the longest time that Mr. Bone was voiced by Don Knotts. His way of speaking was clearly an inspiration. He is the assistant principal, and as I'm also remembering this episode after so long, I'm surprised he left the room. He's shown in other episodes to take his job very seriously 😅

Compared to stories I've heard from r/AskReddit about school "Zero Tolerance" policies, Doug and Patti's situation is relatively tame. Still shouldn't have happened, Mrs. Wingo should have been more attentive, but this was pretty light all things considered. Another Doug episode recommendation: Doug's Bum Rap, which is about academic cheating.

This scenario takes me back to Jr. High when one of my classmates was physically assaulting me and when I told him to stop, not only did the teacher only call me out, she also had me write him a formal apology for 'disrupting his learning'.

That would happen to me often in 2nd grade: the teacher had this 3 strikes system, first time you did something you weren't supposed to do, your name goes on the wall and you get a warning, 2nd time gets you another warning, 3rd time: 1/2 after school detention. I don't recall anyone getting a "4th strike" but someone asked about that once (cause a kid got a 3rd strike really early in the day) and she said it would carry over to the next day. So what would happen often with me: I'd get the first strike (which I deserved) the kids would all go. "Oooooooo" I'd say "Shut up!" And the teacher would give me a 2nd strike for that. You'd think she'd say something like "alright, settle down everyone or your name's going there too."

I had teachers who, like Ms. Wingo here, would alternate between being strict and then suddenly be negligent. There was this one kid in my math class back in 7th grade over 20 years ago who one day for the entire class period recited the entire car demonstration scene from Tommy Boy ("I can't feel my legs" "New guy's in the corner puking his guts out") loudly ad nauseum and the teacher who I recall being very strict and stern didn't say/do anything (maybe he was hard of hearing?). Not saying I dislike Tommy Boy but in a normal class with normal discipline, that behavior wouldn't be tolerated Also I know I'm in the minority here but imho Ms. Wingo was a very bland character (and I love this show and most of its characters but it had a handful of really bland characters like Doug's mother Theda and Chalky Studebaker). Tippi Dink who has the same voice as Ms. Wingo is literally Ms. Wingo if she had a personality and any appeal. Even Miss Slovak from the first season of Hey Arnold! had (slightly) more appeal than Ms. Wingo, and I know those will be fighting words for some people.

I notice in so many of these videos, there’s commentary about how it’s crazy/unacceptable for students to be left unsupervised in a classroom, even briefly. But it seemed like it happened all the time when I was a kid. Is this a new thing? I hear from teachers nowadays they can’t even go to the bathroom.

I don’t think its new. Some schools do a better job than others. These community expects teachers and staff to supervise their children at all times.

I love that you're watching Doug! I remember watching Doug the first time it ever aired. Summer of 1991, I was six years old. I already liked the network, but Doug and Rugrats really cemented me as a Nickelodeon kid, and I would come to love much of what the network ran throughout the 1990s and even into the early 2000s, cartoons and live action shows alike. On another note, IMHO, Disney ruined Doug when they took it over. I believe that Doug is in 6th grade in a K-6 elementary school, IIRC. Haha, Doug was always imagining being Quailman or Smash Adams or Race Canyon. Very active imagination. Part of what made the show fun. Mrs. Wingo is usually a better teacher than this. Mr. Bone just leaving them alone seems kinda out of character too. They're on school grounds. You can see the banner again in the background sometimes that say "time will pass will you?" "Just watch it mister" Mr. Bone out of character again. Although it is something he'd say when minor things happen, when bigger things like this are going on he's usually marching them to his office. Yes, I'd love for you to watch more of the Nickelodeon era Doug. Great show. Until next time, cheers!

In my Intro To Education course in community college, our instructor was a bit old school with how she assigned us work. There were weirdly no tests or homework, but she did assign us a book report on a book that had at least a little bit to do with teaching/being a teacher. Me being a pretty good student but also lazy, I just straight up didn't do the book report at all because I calculated that if I did all the other work in the class well enough, that I would still pass with an A- That being said, there was another class where a debate where I fumbled a little bit and brought me down to a D for a bit, and I thought that was ridiculous

So my wife teaches 7th grade and she never would make 1 book report worth 1/3 of a students grade… it may be a section but it’s one of a few assignment which add up to the percentage. She has also had a similar situation in such one of the boys was pestering one of the girls to do his school work for him. She pretty much spoke to both kids and when it was clear who was the aggressor… she sent him to the office.

I never had that happen with a teacher either except for a final exam. Only thing I can think of that was anywhere close was I had one science teacher offer to give us extra credit if we entered the optional science fair and the bridge building competition (having to build a bridge with just popsicle sticks and school glue that was strong and not too heavy), 5% extra for each one. Another biology teacher in high school made a nice offer after pretty much everyone did pretty bad on the first test, saying if you pass on the 2nd test and improve by at least 20% she'd drop the score on the 1st test from your overall average.
