She should feel NO GUILT OR SHAME - she couldn't have imagined that something SO HORRIBLE could have happened. My heart goes out to ALL OF ELLIE'S LOVED ONES {FAMILY & FRIENDS}. That boy should get a long prison sentence so he can have time to become ashamed & repentant. He also needs therapy to treat that possessive nature he has that drove him to murder Ellie in cold blood. He should never have freedom until he does not have a possessive bone in his body!! As a teenager, my girlfriend broke up with me via text message and I wanted to have a conversation about it. Not even trying to convince her to stay with her, just have a conversation. She agreed to it, but her parents insisted that we would meet at their home while her parents were at home. At the time, I was a bit upset about their parents, because it felt like they were accusing me of being some sort of psycho who would harm their daughter, after hearing about Ellie's tragic story, I feel a lot differently about it. My post breakup conversation went well and we even managed to stay friends and I certainly did not have any bad intentions, but you never know.

I thought it'll be ridiculous to break up over phone. It made it difficult that my last 2 ex girlfriends did it every week. It was unstable and even at 25 and 29 respectively, I didn't know how relationships truly worked because it seemed new to me and each relationship was over a year but culturally different. One in Texas and the other in Korea. They were violent and abusive and their behavior was hard to control. I couldn't touch them at all and didn't try. I ended up breaking up both relationships because of the risks.

I guess there are some situations in life that you need to have gone through yourself to fully comprehend their impact! A good friend of mine lost two husbands (accident and heart attack); a nightmare! When I mustered up the courage to talk to her about it, she said "there's nothing else than picking yourself up and to go on, as to having the strength to do it? It doesn't matter if you don't, there's no choice, is there?". That sums it up quite accurately, in my mind.

People don't fully mature mentally and psychologically until 23-24 years old. In fact, people under that age were legally and correctly considered children until WWII when the law changed. We needed every able bodied male and 18 year old boys were in body more like men. They couldn't send children to war, so the age that was considered to be an adult was simply lowered to 18 years of age.

(she is in 30's, so that means basicaly lifetime prison). And some thieves , that stolen 1 milion from state money, got 11 and 12 years in our country. it is sick. They got as murderers, that's sick.

We don't believe in so called "absolute punishment" you practise "relative punishment" which means it's not punishment for the sake of punishment but it has to have a "purpose". I think there were red flags. Tom's possessiveness and talk of marriage pointed to a controlling personality which is a red flag for domestic violence homicide.Regarding premeditation...he tried to cover up his crime by preempting conversation about the defensive scratches on his neck claiming them to be self inflicted.Strangulation is deliberate and takes considerable force and time.This is a dangerous young man.

With the recent death of his grandmother, and potential upcoming death of his father, this may have triggered a mental illness, possibly BPD, which brings on EXTREME instability often due to fear of abandonment. Left untreated, patients with BPD have been known to become excessively volatile and often viciously violent when triggered. This, of course, is not the case for all diagnosed with BPD, but these behaviors and actions are well documented within this illness.

Same here. The things I’ve done in my youth make me shutter in disgust. There were many times I put myself in situations where if I had worse luck, I’d be killed many times. Dangerous parts of town, dangerous men, rides home from strangers, drinking at clubs and leaving with people I’d just met. Now that I’m a mom, I’d be so upset if my kids did what I did. Kudos to those girls; to Ellie’s friends. Good for them for taking such a negative, horrible event and doing their best to turn it into a possible positive outcome for any girls in the future. Having self defense classes taught at school is a wonderful idea. That’s such a great initiative that Ellie’s friends thought of. What a great way to honor their friend. Her parents are handling their grief amazingly. The integrity they carry themselves with is beyond my understanding. At the same time it doesn’t seem like the boys mother could be held responsible for what he did. Even if she worked with troubled kids, he wasn’t showing homicidal red flags. Plus, at the time her family was in turmoil, her husband was going through chemo and she’s raising a teenage son.

That's exactly what I am fearing. Too often when children are lost, the grief and despair is so overwhelming that the parents are unable to comfort and help each other, with each parent turning inward,. Over the years, the loneliness and solitude turns the marriage turns into an empty shell, and divorce follows. And in this case the final tragedy was that, I believe, she was their only child. So that glue of other children is not there. Let's hope they beat the statistics.

Almost all parents are clueless when it comes to them knowing their child's secrets. Even us parents that think we know our children inside and out never really do. 17 year Olds have secrets some that mean absolutely nothing and some that are the ones we need to know but never will until it's to late. So that along with his mother's job, should have made some red flags pop up. She could have very well seen them, and tried talking with him, or she may have not noticed. No one expects a parent to be claivoyant and "sense" that their child would murder someone. That is absurd. But what many people do find strange is that neither his parents, other family members nor school teachers have ever noticed unusual behaviour, like signs of depression, nightmares, erratic behaviour, verbal abuse and many other signs of mental problems. Normally, parents and close friends do notice even subtle changes in behaviour or signs of something not being like before. No one can say it for sure, but more attention, more time with him and more involvement in his emotional state might actually have helped him deal with the issues and rage that he struggled with. No one who is sane, stable and well integrated in life around them suddenly turns into a rabid knife-wielding murderer because of a breakup.

Between the death of his grandmother, and likely ensuing death of his father, this may have triggered a personality disorder, such as BPD, which is characterized by extreme fear of abandonment. Left untreated, people with this disorder can become extremely volatile and excessively violent when faced with abandonment. Though not all patients with BPD act out to this extent, there's plenty of documentation of extreme acts of violence committed by some with BPD or other cluster B personality disorders. This may have happened too fast for anyone to catch on.

This is tragic on sooo many levels! Ellie doesn't get to live her life..ever,especially not in 12 years!!! He should spend EVERY DAY of the rest of his life,behind bars!! My thoughts,prayers,and condolences are with Ellie's fam,and friends. ❤

people think this doesn't happen a lot but my first BF, when I broke up with him because HE RAPED ME, He legit took a shotgun and threatened to kill himself and his friends. His friends intervened but the damage was already done, I didn't want to have anything to do with him obviously. I called the Police and he was convicted after a confession of it all to his friends.

People know this is true, which is why we have a prison industrial system... In the U.K there are plenty of prisons. In the U.S., they build more prisons than colleges. 🤔

Unless there is a whole lot more evidence brought forward of her inaction or denial in view of him being violent there is absolutely no reason to attack her. That's shameful. I'm Agnostic but perhaps you might consider the old adage, 'There but for the grace of God, go I' instead of blaming her.
