(from SA) ... except that there is some apparent, visible truth in the story that those Maori boys get big fast at a young age. I think it was Andrew Mehrtens (as a short whitey) that I heard commenting on it once. This game, with just-about all the NZers being physically bigger than the SAners, seems proof of that. Funny though how the "smaller"/shorter SA-pack out-scrummed the NZ-pack, so (a) back to you "DNA thing" and (b) physically bigger doesn't mean physically stronger, apparently.

Yep, since the rugby festival was from 15th December - 21st December and every rugby team were playing every 2 days for 60 mins instead of the usual 70 minutes for high school rugby. Otherwise, they would have been all gassed out and fatigued, and it clearly showed for Kelston boys here, the fatigue from playing every 2 days with only a 1-day rest was showing, and Paul Roos surprisingly looked less fatigued despite playing every 2 days as well. I hope that explains why it only 30 mins each half, since usually these school teams would be playing once a week giving them a lot more time to recover.

As a kiwi, our school year is already finished and seniors have already graduated. If it requires players to be under 18yo, most seniors will be 18yo already by this time of the year. So it makes sense to send a much younger team over, basically their team for the future.
@SWJ-xp6ld21 күн бұрын
@@mylord4916 U18 has always meant U18 at the 1st Jan, so if you turned 18 during that year your still u18. But probably because of graduation, no longer students at the school or whatever. @@mylord4916 age brackets have always referred to if your under 18 at the start of the year 1st Jan. Year 13s/18 year olds mainly in NZ would of graduated by then. so age brackets are taken from the 1st jan. Otherwise a u18 comp for year 13 students when you turn 18 during the year you would have to drop out, so it dont work like that. I finished school late 90s, most first 15s were either 7th formers/Y13 or 6th formers/Y12 very few Y11 unless special talent an always the notorius 7th form returns, u19 players, most teams had 4-10 of these players, they stopped that sometime in the late 2000s, so if your 18 already on the 1st jan you would be u19 etc.

The SA teams that played in this and the other international contest in December have huge consgraints, (maybe the same is true of the NZ teanms too) These tournaments come when the students have just copleted their final school leaving exams after they hgave not played rugby for 4 months. I know the 'grey /college team that did not wear Grey jerseys had 2 or 3 starters from the first team, seven or eight players from the U161A and I have no idea where the rest came from . Presumbably second and gthrid strings. I recall Oaul Roos winning by 90 points against Southland and 50 or 60 against one of the top 3 Kiwi school teams in the final inthe Japanese internationaol tournamentn. I am curious as to whether those teams had their first string teams at the tournament. One evaluation of the relative stgandards that I do give weight to is thestatement b the Napier High coach, the secoind year they toured SA in April, They had been hammered the year before by GRey anbd somne lesser /sa schools and similarly int hge second year they had lost all their games. Thie rcoach simply acknowledged that the standard in /sa was higher. Unless one checks the facts surrounding these games,, it is easy to draw wrong conclusions.
