Bryan, loved this how to video!!!!! Your demonstration of collecting small amounts of fatwood, was great and how to collect all that you needed and how to process all that you needed to build your fire made for a complete package!! I will say this though, I once again had to freeze frame you to get a solid look at the sheath, and I was then able to see that Schrade this time has molded a top cover flange to stop the tip of the blade from rocking up and exposing oneself to being cut. A very nice and important feature! Thanks again Bryan....always nice to see you out in the field!!

Bryan, was shopping for a hatchet. Your video educated me enough to go buy the Schrade hatchet. Great hatchet. I LOVE THE SHEATH. It is lighter than any other sheath. It won't hold moisture possibly causing rust on the hatchet like other nylon or leather sheaths. I love leather for looks, but for function, I think the thermo-plastic one that comes with the hatchet is the best.

When you need fire the most is when it is hardest to get going - wet and cold. Schrade has really upped their game the past five years or so. Fatwood is a gift from the man above. I wonder how many lives fatwood has saved over the years. A little knowledge and good tools make all the difference. Thanks for another informative, well done video Bryan.

Bryan, excellent video and great demo on wet weather in Georgia. So true. really really wet weather can be common in Georgia during the hurricane season. Good tip for finding fatwood at the bottom of the tree I've always looked for it in dead standing stumps. but that would be much easier to get a small amount in a hurry.I will definitely employ this tip. Thanks for your time and effort.

Another name for "fatwood" is "lightred-knot". With just about any old downed pine tree, the rot can be chopped off and the fat-wood can be found where the sap settled. Even old pine stumps can sometimes be kicked over and have very good high concentrated fat wood. Don't try to saw it, it will ruin a saw blade. This type of wood is some of the best natural fire starter in the woods! It's like the wood has been soaked in diesel fuel. One could build a fire in the bottom of a mud puddle with fat-wood! Good informational video! I was torn between the Gerber and this hatchet. I think I'm going to buy this hatchet since it's has a place for hammering on the back.

My old wooden handled hatchet broke at the end of the season last year. I just ordered one of these. VERY nice review. Just IMHO, you might want to use some of that dry pine straw under the fatwood. It ignites way easier than the fatwood and really helps kick the fire off... You can actually kick off a good fire in wet conditions with the pine straw and twigs to get it going instead of fatwood... After this global looniness going on, I bet you , like us here in TX can't wait to get out to the woods this fall! Thanks for the review. This really helps me feel better about my purchase. Oh and at 6:03 you actually start batoning the hatchet. Never seen that done before. Never even thought of it. I will typically get the hatchet head buried in the round, and then drive the hatchet and round into the support we were using, rock, deadfall whatever to drive the split the rest of the way. Works for me without risking the hatchet.

Must agree this is a great tool for the camper. It is a good match for a boy scout hatchet I bought a long time ago that needs a little handle work and a new sheath. The trick is you want a wide blade and a fairly short handle with enough weight to chop well and not too heavy to carry. If you want something even lighter and more compact Gerber makes a little BG hatchet that is also unitized metal that cuts fairly well and is meant to choke up on for finer cutting but the tool is a sheet of rolled steel with a rubbery handle coating. In a lot of ways it's made like a large knife and can be used like one with the advantage of having an optimum weight distribution for an ~8" long tool for chopping wood. You have a good hammer & the BG "hammer" is just a place to hit if you are batoning not much if any different than the back of a large knife blade in my view. Lots of options but I'd say this Schrade looks like one of the most balanced and most effective for the camper.
