Hi, guys! Just a heads up- I apologize for the mosquito noises in this video. I wanted to go to a wetland in order to test the claimed waterproof survival kit. So mosquitoes were thick. Unknown to me at the time, a few were going for the mic and the noise was louder than expected. I could have hiked to an open area, but it was windy that day. I didn't, trying to avoid wind noise. I thought about not posting the video, and making another. But, in the end, I decided that the bugs were part of the experience.

A ranger band from an old bike tube would be a perfect addition. It could perfectly seal the Schrade container (or any other), is also flammable and can be cut down to smaller ranger bands for different uses if necessary.

Thank you Doug for a very practical evaluation of a "cheapo" survival kit. Great to see you recommending folk take a good, loud, whistle with them. Best whistle I've found in the USA is the surplus aviator whistle put out by a company called ASR. In the UK any whistle by Hudson/Acme will do, my favourite is the "Tornado" , followed by the "649 Survival" then the classic "Thunderer" and "Police" whistles.Folk just don't realise how hoarse you can become in a short period of time. You are so lucky to be able to still get 'strike anywhere' matches in the USA, you can no longer obtain them in the UK, for EU safety reasons ! A good tip for strike anywhere matches , if you are lucky enough to have them, is to coat them in dripped candlewax , to increase protection from water. Also, put Vaseline on a 100% cotton ball and use that for packing the spare space in your pill bottle, it makes a great tinder. Last tip involving matches, if in a cold,wet situation strike TWO matches to start your fire. Plus, wrap some duct tape around your pill bottle and you will not only have some duct tape, but you protect the pill bottle from unintended damage. Keep up the good work.

The killer is the fact that the case isn’t waterproof - I’d pay four bucks just for a good case, then assemble my own kit. Kind of useless the way it is - those cheap-o matches, oi vey. Thanks for a good honest review, Doug.

What a ripp off. Hope they didnt charge you too much for that Doug.😭😭😭😭 glad you did this video to warn people. Birthday candles are cheap and great idea. Keep going in the wind. Great advice and info on the split ring. I see the name SHRADE. and instantly expect better. But for $3.99 the price tells us what to expect. Great video bro. Its all good to have a fish hook a needle for someone who knows what they are doing but generally a waste of time. No thread. Why bother. I LIKE YOUR MENTALITY. A DECENT TIN, AN OLD FILE, PIECE OF CHERT OR SPARKING ROCK AND PUNKWOOD. I WOULD HAVE DUCK TAPE FOR 1ST AID AND THOSE LITTLE MAGIC CANDLES ARE FANTASTIC.😁👊😊👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 great video

Plastic slip-rings exist, and I believe aluminum ones also.
@DougShoeBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
Good point. Thank you. A person could replace the steel one with one of those if he wanted. But IMHO the included steel ring (which came attached to the compass) is almost a booby trap. An inexperienced person (or one panicked or stressed out in an emergency) might follow the compass thrown off by the split ring and get lost.
@jimbayler42772 жыл бұрын
@@DougShoeBushcraft : "Split ring": Oh , I agree strongly. Most who would get pulled in by its "Bushcraft cuteness", wouldn't know any better. I was building off that situation and offering a solution that had a similar functionality to the steel split-ring, but without the negative points.

Is it me or is Black a stupid colour for a Survival Kit?? It would make more sense to be a bright and easy to spot if you dropped it where black just blends in, especially at night
@DougShoeBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
You are right. Bright orange is better for a survival kit. The exception is something like military where the person might be trying to hide equipment if captured, etc. But that's not most of us.
@bigstevie16902 жыл бұрын
@@DougShoeBushcraft Exactly, I would posit that the vast majority of these are geared towards regular people and the outdoor community the military has there own tactical specs they need to follow to keep things stealth but that's not really who these are for
