Un matin de 1822, Schubert livre un texte énigmatique où tous ses fantômes semblent prendre corps : l’errance, la solitude, la consolation, l’amour déçu. Inspirés par ce récit onirique, Raphaël Pichon, Pygmalion et Stéphane Degout ont imaginé une grande fresque romantique, entre exhumation de trésors méconnus et redécouverte de chefs-d’œuvre.
One morning in 1822, Schubert wrote down an enigmatic text in which all his ghosts seem to take shape: wandering, solitude, consolation, disappointed love. Inspired by this dreamlike narrative, Raphaël Pichon, Pygmalion and Stéphane Degout have devised a vast Romantic fresco, combining resurrection of unknown treasures with rediscovery of established masterpieces.
Eines Morgens im Jahr 1822 schrieb Schubert einen rätselhaften Text, in dem alle seine Geister Gestalt anzunehmen scheinen: Irrwege, Einsamkeit, Trost, enttäuschte Liebe. Diese traumähnliche Erzählung inspirierte Raphaël Pichon und Stéphane Degout zu einem großen romantischen Fresko, mit dem sie unbekannte Schätze heben und Meisterwerke neu entdecken.

Liszt's superb orchestration of Schubert's song has never been recorded before, and now we have two versions: this spine-chilling one by Stéphane Degout, and another by Thomas Hampson (with "period instrument" orchestra), though oddly they perform it in different keys. Incidentally, the tri-lingual note above may mislead listeners unfamiliar with Schubert's songs to assume that the composer wrote the words to this one: they are in fact by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856).

Bien belle interprétation de ce Lied, l'un des plus impressionnants des "Heine Lieder" de "Schwanengesang".Je n'apprécie pas toujours les "arrangements" pour piano de Liszt (quand ils sont plus lisztiens que schubertiens),mais, dans cette version,Liszt montre toute la maîtrise de l'orchestre du grand compositeur qu'il est.

Is the full performance available somewhere? This is phenomenal. It’s like he is about to lose control of the voice and everything, but it is not. I don’t know how to describe this, but I haven’t heard a Lied to be performed so chillingly.
