This is stunning. This has been one of my favorite pieces since 1981 when I first discovered it. From the very first measure Barbara plays this with different phrasing and more expressive dynamics than any recording I’ve heard. And I have heard many over the years. This expresses Gretchen’s pain deeply and exquisitely. Truly an outstanding performance.
