a very great performance of Schubert's greatest work, even greater than his 9th. It's ignored because Schubert didn't do the orchestration, but Weingartner's orchestration of it is far superior to any of the others, because ONLY this one SOUNDS like SCHUBERT! This is, for Schubert, what Mozart's greatest work, his Great Mass K. 427 completed by Schmitt conducted by Auberson, was for Mozart -- his supreme masterpiece, likewise ignored because critics ignore a masterful completion of a score no matter how masterfully it is completed and how great a masterpiece of a very great composer it is.

I might also mention Haydn's supreme masterpiece, Applausus, which was found only in the 1960s by Robbins-Landon and given a definitive performance at the Tanglewood Festival conducted by Leinsdorf. Like Schubert's 7th and Mozart's K.427 in those performances, it's an ignored supreme masterpiece.

As great the 8th or the 9th, although very different in personality.
