Michael Schumachers driving style explained by other drivers and compares the telemtry of Schumacher and Johnny Herbert. Very interesting and showing how good he really is.

I think, that this video is a proof for everyone, who doubt Michael's skill, saying, that he was so quick only because of the car, only because of using illegal things, etc. Telemetry doesn't lie, and the people, who were involved in motor racing, can judge best his real talent.

All the best drivers drove the best cars at the time. That is still true today. However, the top 5 drivers can over perform in any car they drive. Senna's iconic laps with the inferior Tolman is perhaps the best example but not the only one. My point is: A good car can make a driver perform better, but the best drivers can make the car perform on another level.
@Hungary599

That's right. Only the very best drivers can pull something special of their cars. It's a very good example in this video that Schumacher was 2 tenths faster than his team mate in one single corner. Over a full lap the gap was about 1,5 sec. Alonso is just struggling in the McLaren-Honda, he has no chance to win, but yet it's plain to see how much his performance influences the team. He does a much better job than his car would allow that. And it's true to all the greatest drivers, who have made their mark over the years. They are heroes, legends, people will never forget.

The first view by the helicopter is amazing., for the first time i have understand how fast is an F1 on a circuit. I had followed this sport for almost tweenty years, but is very rare and not easy when you follow the race on tv, or by inside the circuit, having the real perception of them speed. Are rockets on wheels and the champions, in this case Michael, one of the two or three greatest ever, simply phenomenal .. no words.

This is related with eletronic differential on Schumacher car. You cant compare two telemetries from two different cars. And yes, medium and small teams didnt do the same car for Grand Prix. Look to Germany 2000 Grand Prix as a example. Barrichello use the Schumacher car, and from 18th position he won the race.

Yeah I don't quite know that if the cars were exactly 100% equal, there's a lot of feedback between the pilots and the mechanics about " how I want my car to be "if one pilot has more skills to tune his car according to his drinking skills I think that would be a big differential
@armorgeddon
@armorgeddon 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think the electronic differential was invented in 1995, but if it would've been both Herbert and Schumacher would've used it. Barrichello only won the 2000 German Grand Prix because of a safety car phase and lucky tire changes.

Playing the devil's advocate for a moment, if he was such a legend, why wasn't he able to beat Rosberg with Brawn essentially heading the design of the car when he came back? I'm lost to explain that one. Sure he was 'rusty' and out of his prime, but driving is driving. People loved the use the 'two drivers, same car' as the be all, end all of arguments to crown who's a better driver; using that logic, can we say Rosberg is better than Michael?

+Special Well, to make a brief case against Valentino Rossi: - Rossi never would've been 250cc champion if Aprilia hadn't thrown Capirossi out and "promoted" Harada (who still is my favourite rider... #NotSalty) to 500 (with a bike which couldn't win, despite heroics at Donington), they were far better than he was - As far as I remember, contrary to Biaggi, Rossi didn't win his first 500 cc race, and let's remember that at that time, the season opened with MOTHERFUCKING Suzuka, not tame Losail - Not exactly his fault, but he could've done domething: After the death of Daijiro Katoh (who seemed like his only upcoming rival for a few years) which LOTS of people blamed on faulty ride-by-wire throttle, Rossi let Suzuka (Katoh's and lots of fans' and riders' favourite track) take the blame, letting Honda Riders like Hayden and Pedrosa suffer crashes clearly caused by the throttle not closing properly. Some say it also caused Simoncelli's fatal accident, where he got hit by... Rossi. You seem fairly new, so I'll explain the significance of Suzuka. Being the opening round and an extremely demanding circuit, japanese wild card riders often performed better there than regulars, making it the chance of a lifetime for them, including Harada, Katoh and Abe. Of course, that was a problem for regular riders, especially Rossi, who knew honda wanted to have a japanese world champion in the top category, which is why they clung on to Pedrosa and why the Honda wasn't built for taller types like Rossi. This is why Rossi did nothing to save Suzuka in order to avoid a potential emerging japanese champion and why he switched from Honda to Yamaha. Despite claiming he loved japanese riders (hence the Rossifumi nickname), he sure had their audacity, but never showed the same respect they held for fellow riders (did I say "brief" ?) - Rossi's crew alimented a feud between himself and Biaggi to foster mediatic rivalry, and invested far more in public relations - Despite swearing he'd never ever have a tobacco sponsor, Rossi stole Camel from Biaggi to throw him ouf of MotoGP - Every time Rossi had a championship to win on the last race, he lost it, and we can thank Hayden to have shown it first - When Rossi overtook Stoner in Laguna Seca's Corkscrew, it was a move he had reheared in practice, including the part where he went on the sand to cut the chicane. Not only is such a move immediately dangerous, it can also bring dirt on the track just under the wheels of the following riders. It can be noted Stoner lost the front shortly afterwards. It can also be noted that FIM rules state that if a rider gains ANY advantage by cutting a chicane involuntarily, he's supposed to slow down until said advantage is nullified of get black flagged. There was no question of such sanction here. Rossi went on towards victory and a World Championship, if I'm not mistaken. Let's also remember Stoner overtook Rossi cleanly the next year, towards victory and championship - Rossi wore Materazzi's uniform after the feud said Materazzi had with Zinedine Zidane (granted, there was no good side in this mess) - Rossi is the one who demanded a wall between himself and Lorenzo at Yamaha, because Lorenzo was faster. The pressure ended up in himself breaking his leg at Mugello and deciding to go to Ducati - Despite bragging he'd make the Ducati able to win again in "80 Minutes" (or was it 18 ?)and insulting Stoner, his crew and Tech 3, he never got more than a third place on the wet on it, despite huge investments, publicity and despite having Philippo Preziozzi, who had followed even his most stupid directives (because he was trying to get a Yamaha again) fired, while the Aluminium chassis Rossi was asking for was totally different from what Ducati did at the time - When Rossi didn't leave Marquez have priority on Assen's chicane despite being on the outside, he used the fact Marquez, who didn't have a choice, lightly touched him as an excuse to go straight through the grass (which he also had rehearsed in practice) faster than Marquez, who correctly took the chicane while Rossi clearly never intended to, ever could. Said contact allowed Rossi to claim victory despite what you already know about chicanes, but at least he didn't get the championship - Rossi deliberately hit Marquez in Sepang claiming he didn't like the way he rode, but AT LONG LAST he got (lightly) sanctioned for it. No victory nor championship - Rossi once again refused to yield to Zarco at the entrance of a chicane in Austin 2017, allowing himself to cut the chicane, and gain nearly half a second's advantage, at least enough to slipstream the guys ahead. while Zarco couldn't... what an idiot, taking the chicane properly, eh ? No sanction, not even a victory and still no championship for Rossi. You will note these incidents get more and more frequent as Rossi's results get worse and worse, but I don't claim exhaustivity. It's always easier to exhibit fair play when you're winning.

+Special I see, but lots of things I talked about were in another millenium altogether ;) Marquez is a delight to watch, his Moto2 championship winning season was godly, and he didn't disappoint in MotoGP. I'm glad he doesn't let Rossi get to his head anymore. 2017 was great, lots of wonderful fights, and in suspense until the end regarding MotoGP. 2018 will probably be one of Rossi's last runs, but I fully expect him to find excuses for his slowness, Lorenzo might get better on the Ducati, he already did better in a single year with them than Rossi did in two, not to mention his teammate Doviziozo emerged as a serious title threat, and I expect Zarco to be a regular podium, if not victory, contender, Viñales will probably be more regular, especially if Rossi doesn't hog all resources or give spurious data, at least, Marquez will ALWAYS be entertaining to watch. I'm a cheap guy, I don't watch TV, nor do I follow seriously any sport, but I'll happily renew my subscription to MotoGP.com's streaming/VoD service, it's really nice to avoid any ads ads (which were the reason why I stopped watching it on TV years ago), and you can watch older seasons, too. Moto 3 and Moto 2 also usually bring more surprises, and seeing riders go up in the rankings is quite riveting.

People say that the 2005 tire changing rule was to make sure Schumacher not win as much, and I agree. You didn't see Michael win as much because he can't push the tires as hard as 2000-2004, because they have to last 1 and a half to 2 hours, not 25 to 60 minutes of a tire stint. What do you think? Do you think F1 intentionally tried to stop Schumacher winning? Let me know in the comments.

Schumacher conserves the kinetic energy in front wheels by using greater steering slip angles. As he said in the end of this video, he has a great feel for the car, which one would really need to have to able drive like this. Advancements in aerodynamics were really happening at that time and so Schumacher's driving style really took advantage of that. I really believe Schumacher was the first of the next generation of drivers; Alonso is another driver who works the front wheels hard.

I think I understand what Johnny meant. Its not sour grapes, Michael's driving style is not difficult to understand, but its almost impossible to replicate, because it depends on so much the feel of the driver. And even if eveybody undrestand how he does it, only Michael can actually do it.

Eddie Irvine had said something in that direction. "In Ferrari we shared the same equipment AND telemetry. I had all the access to data and stuff. I could look at his data and understand what is he doing, but could not replicate it."
@TMJ32
@TMJ32 6 жыл бұрын
What he meant there was that there's no specific magic secret he had that you can point to and say "that's what makes him faster". If it really was that easy other drivers could have copied him based on his telemetry, (smoother on the steering, late braking, braver on the throttle, etc.). I think Michael himself nailed it right at the end, he just had a better feeling from the car on where the edge was and then he could just hold the car right there all the time. That isn't something you can really learn or copy. It must have been really frustrating being his teammate when he was in his prime. You have the exact same car and yet he can go over a second faster somehow.

In a drive by wire car, it is only a matter of software. The hardware actuators already exist to moderate throttle. Detection of wheel spin and throttle moderation to optimize traction is literally just a software problem at that point. Which is why Senna accused them of having it after standing beside the track and listening to the throttle response of their cars as they came out of slow corners.

Schumacher was a great driver both in qualifying and the race. One of his biggest strengths though was his ability to get the team to work around him. He had a very unusual driving style (similar to Jim Clark) which the car would be designed to maximise. His team mates who had a more conventional driving style would struggle with the car as they wouldn't be able to get a 'feel' for it.

I pretty much got my entire driving style from Schumi. I go deep into corners, and get on the throttle early. It's all about feel and making lots of small corrections to make sure you're EXACTLY where you need to be on the road at any given millisecond. I think the trick is being incredibly OCD about driving. I don't want to feel compromised because I braked at the wrong point or didn't have the car precisely where it needed to be mid-corner in order to get maximum speed, maximum traction on the exit and be lined up for the next corner. It's why you can do so many laps without ever getting bored.

@@offason Obviously English isn't Yoruichi's native tongue. And obviously you're misunderstanding: If you are OCD about driving, doing this and that exact line etc, but you miss by a few centimeters, you can't go faster, that's the conventional driving style, always do this always do that, and if you stray from that = slowpoke. So what Yoruichi means is Schumi corrected for being 5cm closer to the inside on braking+ missing the apex by 5cm, simply by going 10-15cm wider at the exit to allow more speed to build up. That way he was still accelerating at the same point so even if his line on corner entry/exit was inconsistent, it didn't compromise his laptimes, he could still go fast.

I guess Senna used to repeatedly press and release the throttle during corners... in some onboard videos from his car you can clearly hear it. How was he so fast then? Maybe cause the older cars worked better this way? Really nice video!
@azynkron

It served two purposes: 1. When Senna started to drive the cars where still turbo charged so to keep the turbo to spin down and hence lose turbo pressure, he tapped the pedal rapidly. Not enough to make it lose grip, but enough to keep the turbo spooled up. 2. It also acted as a manual traction control. Using the technique he could find out when the tyres started to grip and he could put the foot down. Senna is by far not the only one that has used it, but he certainly perfected it.

yes they do, just look what Honda did with Telemetry in regards to Ayrton senna as a tribute 20 years after his departure, they took telemetry of senna into suzuka and a lot of speakers and they basicly made a simulation of Senna riding the circuit... fantastic and very touching idea.

Or it was illegal TCS? In that season Ross Brawn announced to Herbert that he could no longer see Schumacher's data, while Schumacher could get to see his. Nothing to hide? That car was proven by the FIA to have TCS and Launch control when it was illegal.

Some people adapt better to more powerful cars than others. There is a certain limit some drivers have. Schumacher just had that extra what needed. You can be great in karts but have completely different feeling of speed once you jump in a 700hp race car. Jos can say what he wants but he is not a 7 time WDC is he?

The telemetry tells me a story. Could be a fake story. But the throttle input looks like a computer was controlling it on Schumacer's, but his actual steering looked VERY human, even erratic (almost like he was reacting to what the throttle was giving him, after the fact. However, the other telemetry data looked human for the throttle but the steering is a lot smoother, almost like the driver knew what throttle power he was gonna be using for the steering.
@arkanetechniques
@arkanetechniques 6 жыл бұрын
I got it. It looked like when on an F1 game and you put assistance ON your throttle would be calculated perfectly for the corner by the computer, but your actual steering would be under your control. Thats what the data felt like to me.

@eddieconroy212 6 жыл бұрын
If Herbert or another driver had the team purely focus on him and build the car around him and nobody else you would see a different story. Schumacher has always been fast, but not as fast as these times Indicate. The Bennington by 93 was totally built for Schumacher and the '2nd' driver just had to get on with it. By 95 Herbert or any other driver didn't stand a chance of matching him.

Pure bullshit. When he went to Ferrari is was given free reign to choose his team basically, but not at Benetton, and in doing so, Ferrari won their first championship in forty-odd years... but, if what you're saying is accurate, then the other teams fucked up and should've done the same. Fortunately what you said is pure bullshit.

Stig qwe so he "knew" that, and STILL accepted the spot in Ferrari along side MS, "knowing" that he'd never be given a chance to be world champion? Makes perfect sense. Again, if what you said is true, then why didn't other teams do the same thing? Why didn't Ferrari do that until Schuey came along?
@lealowo
@lealowo 13 жыл бұрын
@MrTiti traction control and the tires have nothing to do with what i said. watch his telemetry, there u can clearly see that he, as any other F1 pilot, has to make corrections with his wheel and his pedals. that means either he went bit far from the limit or he' struggling to attain it. Either way he's not constantly in the limit. Could he drive on the limit at 100% he wouldn't need any corrections. he's the best? => statistically yes. he's the genius he claims he is? =>give me a break
@christiangehtdichnixan
@christiangehtdichnixan 6 жыл бұрын
BECAUSE he is so close to the limit, he has to make the corrections. Herbert is farther away from the limit, hence not so many corrections needed, because the car is not as wild...
@lealowo
@lealowo 13 жыл бұрын
@MyTennis2009 if the car is oversteering its not because of the car itself, but coz he's asking too much from his current setup. think of a correction being a maneuver done by a driver aiming to mitigate a mistake he did in the first place. everybody will agree that a perfect lap would be one where the driver flies on the limit and does not make any corrections since he didn't made any mistakes, regardless of the car's behavior. and such lap has never been performed by any human being so far
@Chris-xl6pd
@Chris-xl6pd 6 жыл бұрын
This is a really linear understanding of driving. Sometimes you can make a mistake and go faster because of it. You can also get lucky over curbs in the way the car lands.

@MyTennis2009 In my opinion Hamilton is by far the best and i have noticed what you mentioned before. he does a lot of things that we regular humans do not comprehend ^^. He may not be a natural qualifier like Senna Schumy or even Vettel but when it comes to race, the real thing, he's a super-talented, exuberant warrior like anything i've seen before. when his car can't give him what he needs, Lewis makes it happen out of the blue, and he's not a robot like many drivers. He's a 100% instinct

100% of the limit throughout the whole corner?????. any human believing that quote is true, evidently doesn't have a clue of what driving is about. Schumy's 7 stars were not all due to his talent. without that much luck and without cheating the way he did throughout his career the outcome would have been very very different. How dare he pretend he grasps the limit to the 100%???? really. he's not that good.
