A true masterwork. Schumann is known for his piano music but truly his orchestral works deserve just as high recognician.

His 3rd symphony is THE masterpiece of the era between Beethoven's 9th and Brahms' 1st; and his Violin Concerto is the most impressive of that era - at least for me. The Cello Concerto is well known and his poetic pieces like Traumerei run deep.

Simply a masterpiece from Schumann. The 2nd movement though taken directly from the 1st is just sublime. Wish he’d expanded that section even more. And the alternating soaring melody of the 3rd movement with the almost pastoral sections is fantastic. Just love this symphony. Perfection.

For me the greatest moment in this symphony comes in the second movement when the beautiful romantic opening of the first movement is surprisingly reintroduced. Schumann had a theme so moving that he had to restate it in an unconventional manner. Just as in the first movement the theme serves as a bridge to other material.

This is one of the great early romantic symphonies. The introduction to the first movement was so moving to Schumann that he immediately restated it in the second movement. Also the transition from the third to the fourth movement is one of the most dramatic symphonic treatments ever. Try also 2nd symphony last movement. In rehearsal ( I play viola) we applauded when it was done: a lifetime dramatic moment.

Why compare this superb performance to others? Enjoy it for the excellent music-making that it is. (My benchmark performance is that of Szell with the Cleveland Orchestra, but in fact, I like this one at least as much.)
@marcosPRATA9186 жыл бұрын
@IvanHernandez-gx4rt6 жыл бұрын
Karajan nunca fue un perfeccionista buscando la autenticidad, de hecho odiaba las versiones historicas revisionistas. El buscaba la suntuosidad y opulencia orquestal, aunque no fuera lo deseado por el compositor.

one of the first post Beethoven symphonies written by a supremely confident Schumann
@DByers-ci5kr2 жыл бұрын
I think you may be confusing Schumann & Schubert. This symphony wasn't written until 1841 & not published until he revised it in 1851, twenty-four years after Beethoven's death. Also he was a neurotic who suffered from deep depressions. Hardly a "supremely confident" composer. A complete failure as a conductor. I think his wife, Clara, kept him going as long & well as he lasted. His emotional turmoils are often reflected in his music making for a depth of feeling difficult to hear from other composers.
Herreweghe offers a crisp, lively conception of this masterpiece. His no-nonsense classical approach is refreshing, but perhaps sacrifices some warmth in the process. It is a dramatic symphony however, and its impact is fully realized here. I've always thought the transition into the last movement was magical, second only to the corresponding one in Beethoven's Fifth.

@nathangottschall24438 жыл бұрын
I actually meant "Schumann." He was also a "light" composer.
@AnthonyDonnellyTT8 жыл бұрын
Hi again. My reference is to the rendition and not necessarily the composer, as I believe that this piece actually packs a nice punch... one realized by Karajan in a wonderfully powerful performance behind closed doors (full blown rehearsal... that morphs into a complete performance). I suppose "light" and "a nice punch" are all subjective. I, for example, hear real power in this piece...and Karajan accentuates it better (regardless of what the composer may have wished portrayed)...and for me at least, power and light are at odds, so while Schumann may have been considered a "light" composer, not that I have found reference to such, his works pack power. Do I make any sense? LOL... Happy listening man!
@Galantski8 жыл бұрын
Are you aware that are actually two versions of this symphony, Anthony? Schumann's original was written in 1841, but he revised it in 1851, and of the two the earlier one is considered "lighter" because of the orchestration. This performance appears to be of the later version, because the tempo markings are in German, whereas the other had them in Italian. When I read your comment I initially thought that maybe just Karajan had used the more densely orchestrated version, which would be expected from him, and Herreweghe the other, but no, both are using the same one. Thus, the difference is more likely due to a different interpretation, and to a lesser extent, different orchestras (Karajan recorded it with the Vienna Philharmonic circa 1965) and venues.
