One story about this piece I've heard is that the poem evokes the state of Schumann and Clara's courtship. In order to marry Clara, Schumann had to battle her father in a long legal battle. If you read the poem with the moon being Clara's father, Schumann being the moon, and Clara being the flower, it creates an interesting layer of narrative. Throughout his pieces, Schumann was known to include ciphers, literary allusions, and hidden messages to Clara, so this interpretation is not without credence.
