Schwinn has updated their Women's Al Comp mountain bike with a new blue to gray fade and a 16" aluminum frame featuring the tapered headtube seen on bikes like the Men's Al Comp, Boundary, Taff and Axum MTBs. The $224 W AL Comp is sold in Walmart stores and on the walmart website. It was in stock at the time of this review.

Photoshop the seat stay down so it lines up with the top tube, shorten the stem, and add 100mm to the seatpost, and suddenly it's a Marlin 7. (Oh, except for this Al Comp's slacker HTA) This really is not a women's bike. Other than the lower seat tube (which Schwinn needs to be reconsidering for all their "men's" bikes anyway), it's no smaller than the men's black/silver version. (In fact, I measure the wheelbase to be 1" longer.) If you're 5-5" to 6" (traditionally a medium or 17"), and it's not too "girly", I'd consider this over the "men's" black/silver.

I bought one of these for my son. We went in half and half. He’s a bit shorter (a tween sized rider for sure). We are definitely going to do the front crank 1x with a shimano mega range in the back. The brakes are great. I have to say cable brakes are soooo much easier to maintain and adjust from anywhere that we’ll be keeping this bike mechanical brakes. Now I’m just looking for the Axum DP Medium to hit the stores. Really hoping we see the Axum Medium in stock before we take our summer cross country road trip! Keep the great content coming and thank you!

As a guy with short legs, I will admit that I like Schwinn upgrading it's 'ladies' frames. I can fit on the Men's comp, but the family jewels do just about hit the top tube. And it's not in purple or pink, to boot.

Just bought one for my lady, and she's super happy with it. Rode so nice, I bought one for myself. Putting some fresh 2.35 Ikons on both this morning, tubeless, on the factory rims. A rockshock Judy up front, and some other upgrades, and I'll start upgrading mine. I got the same one as it rode so we'll compared to all the other bikes. Even the 29ers didn't feel as good. I live in Moab Utah, the meca of mtb. Should probably have a $5k bike, but I like value for my $. This bike rides incredibly well, strong brakes, frame, and shifting. Everything I've torn apart looks clean, well lubed and properly assembled so far. Would purchase again no doubt. Incredible value.

Yes, I'm 5' 7" and recently bought this one night, just before our Walmart closed at midnight. I bought it after watching Kev's videos upgrading the "men's AL Comp". After months of no Al Comps in store, I was shocked to see this one. It never occured to me it was a "women's bike because the frame geometry is right in line with all the high dollar men's mountain bikes I see going into the mountains nowdays. I wondered into Walmart for a couple of unrelated items. As I passed by and glanced toward the bike racks I saw this blue and went for a closer look. I saw Al Comp on the top tube and was excited to see that apparently Schwinn had adopted this lower step frame, obviously a newer model than the silver/black Kev upgraded. Haha! Snagged the one bike they had and was super excited to begin choosing my upgrade components, or wait for a video of Kev upgrading this bike. The next day I researched and saw this video. "Women's bike"? Yeah, only when a woman buys it, lol. So I'm half way through the upgrade build featuring a Manitou Markhor fork ( this is a hell of a good fork for under $300! ), a "Jessica" full top and bottom headset, Continental Trail King tires, tubeless - just fine on the stock rims, and a decent saddle, also sold at Walmart, branded " Selle Royal RoyalGel". For a mere $20 this saddle is 100% comfy on the several 3-4 hour trail rides I've done. I've owned a Cannondale 400, a Diamondback hardtail, and most recently sold my beloved 2009 Motobecane Fly 9357 XR Race bike. All had very good saddles but nothing to compare to this $20 wonder. This is now the frst MTB where I've never even thought about my saddle! The bike now weighs right at 29 lbs, and a lot of that weight was in the stock fork. ..so much for a quick comment. Hey Kev, are you going to do an upgrade on this one? I need budget ideas to upgrade derailleur, front and rear drivetrain, and maybe shifters too.

@@curtisheddins5878 we did the same thing! Just before midnight, all the way in grand junction Colorado from moab Utah... I'll look at those forks and check them out. Sounds like my wife needs that seat as well. Appreciate the tips. The tubeless maxis iKon reduced weight and rolling resistance. Super noticable. No more flats now to boot. You'll enjoy the bike, we are very happy with ours.

@@georgesrisomsak9650 Yes I saw your comment. I'm glad for you guys! Yes the Manitou fork weighs just under 4 lbs , I think. Felt like that stock fork must have weighed 25 lbs, hahaha. Tubeless, good tires, light! I'm so glad I didn't wait all summer to save up $ for a $7-800 bike shop Specialized or something. This bike will be just as good by Spring after I upgrade the drivetrain, AND I got to ride every weekend in the meantime! 👍

@@curtisheddins5878 finished the tubeless setup, but had problems. I used a 3m version of gorilla tape, and it held for 2 days. I could tell I was loosing pressure. Re-did the tape with some 3m 8898 rim tape, and they are happy. What a difference. Still trying to decide on shocks, but have a DNM seat shock absorber for the wife's bike on the way, and thinking about upgrading her rims to something nice now too... We've racked up 100 miles so far. Zero problems. Tubeless conversion was totally worth it, just get proper tape that won't let the sealant creep past the adhesive, and soak into the tape fibers. I would never recommend gorilla tape or the like after first hand experience. Thin plastic tape, impenetrable by sealant, is what ya want. Doing it right the first time saves $ AND time. As a ford technician, I should have known better. So much for saving $ on these! I probably should have bought something higher end, but I'd would just spend that much more upgrading still yet, so I feel I'm still ahead. 🤣 Hope y'all are enjoying these things as much as we are.

I love it, and if I was ready to buy, I may get it. As a man, I prefer women's bikes, to get that lower middle bar so I don't rack myself - which I almost did last week on my men's bike, when my feet slipped off wet pedals unexpectantly as a gear mis-shifted going uphill. Also, I've found I can jump on and off a woman's bike easier w/ the lower bar, which I tend to do as I get to a steep hill or a final stop.

The glossy pearl aqua blue and gray are definitely stunning. My first reaction out of the box was, "Is car waxing your bike a thing?" As far as sizing, I think we simply need to be a lot more careful with the Schwinns, since the ("men's bike") top tubes are all 1-2" too high at the seat tube. (The geo of a large has the standover of an XL or worse.) In the case of the "women's" Al Comp, other than standover, it's not really smaller than the "men's". The BB to the rear axle measures the same on both. And the BB to the front axle is actually 1" longer on the "women's". Why? Take another look at that HTA when you have it next to the men's. Add in the longish stem, and you have too long a reach for the 5-7" person I bought it for. An easy fix. But it's absolutely too big for the 5-4" rider I bought another for. Traditionally, a 15" has been fine for them, but this isn't close to that. Which is why I hesitate to call it "women's" at all. (And it took Walmart quite some time to figure out just what to call it.) What I think this really is, is a legit update to the "men's" Al Comp: better paint, better geo and a top tube sloped more like a proper mountain bike (of course, the seat stay being higher rather than in line with the top tube will be masculinity-challenging). Give it a proper short stem and long seat post on it then give it a spin.

I own this bike I’m male 5’11 170lbs I have a more expensive but older giant STP obviously the Giant is better but I have added a few upgrades to this bike and is now comparable to my Giant. This bike is a lot of fun and with just a few hundred bucks spent on upgrades you can have a good trail bike. I have taken it on many trails as I live in UT so I have plenty of terrain to test. You can easily build a good trail bike out of this for under $500 which makes it an incredible bang for the buck if you are trying to get into mountain biking on a budget. The bike is also noticeably lighter with upgraded forks. The drive train I have plans to upgrade but it does fine on even tougher sections. Hope this helps anyone out looking for a half decent bike.

Yeah, I had the privilege of spending eight years of my work life as a bike assembler at a Walmart, and I still happily work there in another position, and sometimes the problems with bikes are due to poor final assembly in store, but often it is a problem with the assembly process at the factory as the in-store assemblers are, in theory, just responsible for inserting the seat post into the frame and mounting the front tire and that sort of thing. But a fast-fingered and bike-loving assembler, like myself, would notice such problems and get the bike quickly dialed. Same with wheel truing--some came out of the box with seemingly tacoed wheels, but I'd reach for the spoke wrench and do my thing because I cared about our customers and wanted them to enjoy a smooth ride.

@@BMOutdoorz That is offically awesome, a tip of the cycling cap to your friend and for sure, it is important that bikes be set up properly and as a Walmart assembler, I simply applied my own good childhood experiences to the work--I got a Schwinn Sting-Ray in '67 in San Francisco when I was eight and a department-store ten-speed in Frankfurt, West Germany in '74 and both bikes served me well for everything from riding to school to, well, you know, being like Evel Knievel. And when I would see a kid getting a Walmart bike for birthday or whatever, I knew, hey, that might be it for him or her for years--the parent saying that's your bike, you better take care of it. And I simply wanted it to be a solid bike, a bike for fun and adventure and good times. And it was absolutely breath-taking, all the bikes that were purchased in a day or week. And it is still the same, even today and even better, by the looks of it from Kev.

In my opinion 1x is the way to go, even more so for recreational riders, who often never shift the front and let the chain drag on the derailleur's cage until they wear a hole through it. While you may feel insecure in your wrenching ability, it is difficult to adjust a front derailleur when it is of poor quality, so that is yet another reason for Schwinn to just get rid of it altogether. Fingers crossed for 2022.

Nice Sea Mist Blue but the frame is as you say womens so they can easily get over the bars. Apart from the things you pointed out, looks nice for a woman to get into riding on a heavy bike lol. Might be to heavy that they end up riding it again possibly.

Why so heavy? I would have bought one for my kiddo but it's heavier than my giant axum. Shouldn't smaller be lighter?

Interesting. They finally updated the women's model. In my area, it's still not listed as available or even out of stock. They still only have the older Women's Al Comp with the rear rim brake (which is very hilariously labeled to have *72.5"* wheels... so... we're in penny farthing territory, I guess). I'd been curious to see if they would ever update this one or not. With that frame size, how short of a rider does it actually accommodate?
@KevCentral

Not sure how sort would work with it, but that 72.5” may be a Penny-Farthing edition Comp 😝

@@KevCentral You have already put images in my head of what that review would sound like. "I've been on many a trail ride on many big-box bikes -- some of which felt capable and some not so much... but I've never quite felt the fear of the reaper's scythe against my throat that this bike gives me. And that's on smooth roads. But a wise man called Buck Dharma once said, 'Don't fear the reaper', so I didn't. And then I died. You are now listening to the ghost of KevCentral."
@sheldonking4022
@sheldonking4022 3 жыл бұрын
You are incorrect. The rim rear front disk is 2 generations old for the comp (both "women" and "men"). There was a "women" comp with dual disks last generation (19 as you are saying). (I say this having one myself.)

Thanks for this. In your opinion would the Axum work with 27.5 wheels? I'd like to be able to swap stuff around and just bought the women's AL Comp for my daughter, still trying to decide on a bike for myself. Either the Axum or large AL Comp. Thanks!
@KevCentral

If the standard men’s al comp will fit you I would think a medium frame Axum would also fit. It does for me. That would mean you wouldn’t need to change wheels - which is 💰

Hey Kev. I want to build my wife an ebike with this schwinn model. I’m going with a bafang motor and a down tube battery. My question is weather there is enough room for the battery on the down tube. It pretty tight in there.

@KevCentral

It really isn’t male/female. It’s basically just a slightly smaller frame. The industry is getting away from gender-specific bikes since lots of men like lower bars/smaller frames and many women want a larger frame. If it fits I would ride it. I love that color combo.

I think without those sections of no housings - with a full length housing - things would flop around, but good question. I may have to research that to find out for sure

@@KevCentral I put bigger tires on Gina's bike and the bare cable flops against the tire and catches on tread. Quick fix lol cut a piece of a straw and split it and wrapped it around the cable so I could zip tie it up. Shifted fine and stayed put. Going to put some section of blue cable housing on those areas and it goes with the blue and black theme.

Those bars look unpleasantly weird. Like there's a lot of backsweep and downsweep and they looked like they were mounted kinda rolled back. Maybe it's me, from my BMX and flatland days I prefer a little upsweep, just a tad backsweep and a more level mount.
