Schwinn Lemon Peeler Krate w/rear disc brake - AFTER restoration video filmed 3 -15 -2015

After working part time on the bike for about 6 weeks since the original video, this is the 1972 Schwinn Lemon Peeler after careful cleaning, detailing, waxing of every component and greasing of all bearings. This bike was all original right down to the tires and was not beat upon like most old boy's bikes are. The seat is usually shot, but this one is really clean and still had the reflector attached and the stickers underneath.
The one thing that makes this bike unique was the rear disc brake, only made by Schwinn for 2 years. The brake shoes on it are hardly worn and it still works great, as does everything else. And of course, who doesn't love the 5 speed shifter as the ultimate in coolness? Also includes a front Atom drum brake, springer fork suspension and shock absorbers on the seat, too!
After some TLC I think it turned out pretty decent for being 43 years old. (Check out the before restoration video if you haven't seen it already)
A bit of advice to all you old bike lovers: Before you decide to start any restoration, you need to be very careful about how you clean these old bikes as the decals in particular are easy to ruin if you use the wrong cleaning method. The paint, chrome, seat and tires must be done correctly as well or you can destroy them very easily.

that's gorgeous! my uncle has a lemon peeler almost identical to yours and he wants to trade me for my newly acquired schwinn run about 3 speed. I think I'm going to do it since the run about is super tiny and I want to ride my bikes.

That thing is awesome! Wish I had a suicide shifter for the purple 83 sting ray I'm working on. Not exactly a restoration, but it's gonna have twisted pedals and a motor so far.

How did you get the chrome looking that good? I have a couple of restoration projects that need the chrome cleaned up good.

Nick Slisz We removed the fenders and washed the surface dirt off with Dawn dishwashing soap in hot water and a nylon bristle scrub brush. We then rinsed and dried them and removed the remaining rust and tar with very fine grade OOOO steel wool. You can use Greased Lightning with the steel wool for really tough jobs, just rinse off with water and dry. After that apply a good wax and they look like new.
