And I have a 1972 (both blue and tall frame) that I completely built from a frame that couldn't have had 20 miles on it. Until I got it, it hadn't ever been 20 miles from the factory. Hey, I'm seven years late, but I will add some comments. I owned a 72 Super Sport in opaque green, purchased in 72 as a gift for me, and the only year that bike came in that color plus these frames were fillet brazed; an internally welded construction that required a bit more work to make than ordinary brazed frame. Plus these came standard with Brooks B-15 leather saddles(you need to get one). This bike was a huge step up from a Varsity/Continental where you can ride it all day compared to those tanks. Back when I was a high school freshman riding with friends we would take sixty plus mile trips wearing jeans and sneakers, none of that frilly clothes and shoes I wear today. I also had an Orange Crate, a Purple Ram Horn Fastback, and a blue Fastback when I was younger. The shop that sold the bikes Barnards(google this place, like stepping into a time machine) in Oak Park, IL is still in business and I'm surprised at what they get for original ones today. Of the bikes I own or ride today, I have a gorgeous 81 Chrome 11.8 Voyageur that I'm selling on CL Chicago and ride a 68(I think) Super Sport that has been brought into the twenty-first century. Ultegra 10 spd group with changes where the complete group wouldn't fit plus some stuff just because; D7900 durace front derailleur, no spacer required, 105 three piece crankset, two-piece Ultegra wouldn't work, Tektro long reach 559s , just as pretty, again Ultegra too short, Mavic Open Pros laced with Wheel Smith double butted spokes to Ultegra hubs and Vittoria Rubino Pros 28mm, custom cable ends were required, Nitto bars, I forget the stem, seat post with Schwinn logo, etc, etc. I removed the kickstand and had the bottom bracket faced. The only original parts are the frame, chrome fork and original Brooks B-15 saddle in great condition. But I have a tan B-17 on it with tan bar tape. Against the green frame looks just beautiful.

Nice! That's right, The Supper Sport was only offered in Opaque Green in 1972 and it came with a Brooks Saddle. That same year the color was also offered on the Paramount and Sports Tourer and in 1973 they offered a Panasonic World Traveler in that color as well. Sound like you had some great muscle bikes growing up, those are worth quite a bit now days. The Chrome Voyageur is a sweet bike, besides my 1972 chrome Paramount I also have a 1976 chrome Super Le Tour 12.2. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your bikes!👍👍🔧🔧

The paint on the 1973 is a little bit iffy because I put over 50,000 miles on it. My 1972 is super sweet. I decided to put as much chrome as I could fit on it. Even little chrome fenders. But the total price with frame, bearings, crank etc I have about $650 in it. And worth every cent. It just glides forever. And it goes over the Ringling bridge frequently. The Super Sport, the Superior, and the Sports Tourer are the chrome moly, hand brazed frames. Experienced riders always want to ride it over their Klein's and lightspeeds.

They look like you bought them yesterday! I noticed your LeTour is missing the 2 chrome chain guards. It looks good. I restored mine. I put them back on because the chrome was really nice. BTW. The LeTour was $159.00 new. I can't get over how great the chrome cleans up on these old Schwinn's.
@that70sschwinn7 жыл бұрын
The old Schwinn chrome was for real and it does clean up well, Glad to hear you got your Le Tour restored, I decided to leave the chain guard off after taking it off to clean and thought the chain rings looked like the Campagnalo Strada crank set on my Paramount, then the Spoke guard was removed to complete the European look, the previous owner added the Brooks saddle so it made a nice package. I did keep the parts and may put them on at some point. These bikes were a little less than I thought, $159 was a great price for these beauties, thanks for sharing and thanks for watching...Cheers

Back in the mid 80's, I was trying to see if my older son was interested in riding, so I started him off with the smallest 10 to 12 year old LeTour's that I would pick up at garage sales for $15 to $20. As he grew, I would find the next larger size. Over the years, I bought three different sized LeTour, Super LeTour, and Sports Tour bikes dirt cheap, tp keep him riding. @that70sschwinn3 жыл бұрын
No, they all came with the Schrader Valve stems, when I restored my first bike, some how, I ordered the Presta valve tubes and really liked the long threaded stem and they way the looked on the S-6 Rims, after that I used them on all my projects, with the exception of the Super Sport and The Continental. I'm a stickler for original period correct parts so this modification was not what I would typically do but I really like the attachment nut that keeps the stem in place and straight up at a 90 degree angle. Thanks 😏👍🚲 Glad you liked them... I actually owned a made in Taiwan Schwinn Traveler, I got it for free with a bent fork and gave it to a buddy that had a bike shop. These were made in the early 80's along with the World Sport. Here is some great info from a Schwinn forum thread... Taiwanese (built by Giant) Schwinns have a date code (on the right rear axle hanger or on the bottom bracket shell) in the format 'Gmmyy'. The letter "G" followed by a two-digit month code (01 = January etc.) and two more digits for the production year (81 = 1981 etc.). An example would be 'G0681 which equates to "Giant, June, 1981" or GO0783 July 1983 Here is a Giant built, made in Taiwan Traveler. Once you begin your project, it will all come into place as all the parts are easy to remove and install , just make sure you take notes or take pictures of how all the parts fit for reference. here is a video that shows one apart and the second shows installing the cables. No worries, I like to assist when possible, I found the exact factory ribbed shift cable and have used it on all my restorations, as I like to use period correct replacement parts, follow the link below 43 inches for $11 bucks, this should be enough to replace all 5 segments, 2 by handle bar 2 by bottom bracket and 1 at rear derailure. www.ebay.com/itm/1-Huret-Grey-Shifter-Cable-Housing-Roadbike-5-10-speed-Schwinn-Bicycle-nos-/182539730851?hash=item2a80373fa3:g:mv8AAOSwGIRXYwru

I am a little puzzled about that 1974 Varsity? I thought that they stopped making Odd # sizes in 1970. In 1971 frame sizes were 20" 22" 24" and in 1972 also added a 26". I think that site gave you some wrong imfo. on frame sizes.
@that70sschwinn7 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct, in 1974 the Varsity Frame sizes were 20" 22" 24" 26" thus this Opaque Blue '74 is a 24" inch frame, the site had the correct sizes, I was looking at the 1970 Catalog details for my '70 Varsity and copied and pasted the details forgetting the frame size difference as all other components were the same, my bad, thanks for catching the discrepancy. Cheers...

I purchased an early 70's lemon yellow Schwinn Varsity, with kids' sized 24" wheels - (only Niagara Falls Cyclery has replacement 24 X 1 1/4" tires) - It has an eight inch high-rise handlebar stem, and extremely short and slender seat post,... Luckily, I found a solid aluminum 3' rod, and used a 3' slender chrome furniture rod, (sliced length-wise), and it made a nice shim for the extra slender seat post. It fits my height of 5'11", well.

Which bikes are more popular Schwinn or Raleigh ?
@that70sschwinn3 жыл бұрын
Great question Thomas! I went to the experts on the Schwinn Bike Forum and got some nice answers, see below for a very detailed answer to your question from one of the members 👍 Thanks for watching 🚲🔧 At the peak of the bike boom Schwinn was selling about 1.4 million bikes per year, making most of those themselves. 10 speed road bikes were all the rage then. 1969 was the first year they reached 1,000,000 produced in a single year (the Orange Krate). Raleigh was selling 30 million world wide then. Just their Nottingham factory made more bikes than Schwinn ever did. They had dozens of factories in countries all around the world. The old saying about the sun never sets on the British Empire applied to Raleigh as well. Raleigh bought dozens of other bike companies to get to that level of production. Schwinn only bought a few (Cspel, Kestrel, Klein) bike makers and none of those lasted long in the Schwinn line up. Now, Giant is manufacturing 80 million bikes per year and Schwinn zero. 100% of Schwinns are outsourced. It's just another marketing name for Dorel corp. My guess is Dorel is annually selling more Schwinns than the Schwinn family did. Schwinn's big sales advantage in the USA was the incredible dealer network they worked so hard to build. There has been nothing close in the bike industry ever. Raleighs were sold through independent bike shops and just didn't have the same number of outlets in the USA. « Last Edit: Today at 11:40:09 AM by rickpaulos »

Thank God they don’t make them like that anymore. I recall easily bent rims, heavy bikes. All this nostalgia is clouding up the reality that these were a couple of levels above the cheap, Murray, supplied Sears bikes of that era. They were “better” than the Ross too. Yes, when compared to those“Sears” bikes, they were good. Yet, they were not up to the level of the Raliegh, Motobecane of the era. I owed a German Jaguar that was basically a cheap European road bike. It was way lighter, easier to pedal than any Schwinn bike of that time. Anyway, nice work on the bikes. Very nice.
@that70sschwinn3 жыл бұрын
That may be the case with the steel frame, Varsity, Continental, Sprint and other flash weld frames, these bikes were mass produced for affordability and durability with life time warranties. The filet brazed chromoly frame bikes like the Superior, Sports Tourer and 531 Reynolds Frame Paramount, were certainly in the same league as most European bikes of that era. I have a couple of Raleigh bikes in my collection that are very similar to my Paramount, including the Reynolds 531 frame, Campy group set, Brooks Saddle and Cinelli quill and handle bar. I will certainly get my money back thanks to eBay's money back guarantee policy. I have been looking for one of these for a while and thought I finally found it. I believe that to make your Camelback build look symmetrically correct, you will need to start with 20" frame based on all the images I have seen.
