One of the greatest science fiction films of all time, stellar acting, great story, fantastic special effects, top of the line all the way !!!!!

For a B-grade film, Robert Wise's "The Body Snatcher" (1945) is pretty darn awesome, IMO. But "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is nonetheless my favorite of Wise's films. For a 1950s heroine, Patricia Neal's character is surprisingly smart and resourceful.

After reading the article, I understand the context for "reading voice" comment which IMO is superfluous as your reading and production are impeccable. I am now a fan and thank you!

A classic film. The re-make was a very poor imitation.

This one is slightly better and like the end. Done good! I still enjoyed learning more about the film and never looked at it quite the way you explain. Very interesting.

Great 1st vid. The remake is terrible. I saw it in the theater, and I left wishing I had my time back. I still need to see the original

Truly is a lasting classic. And the remake was SO awful! Yet, there could be a decent updated version still I think. But for now, this version does just fine. And ironic how this competed with The Thing - being so aloof and mysterious, while this movie was so upfront and direct. Makes for a great double feature still.

Don’t even get me started on the remake. Wowzers.

Since the Christian allegory wasn't intentional or even noticed by the director, that makes it not only spooky but since it was so prevalent in the story, some may even go as far as to consider it to be divine intervention. What movie can boast that possibility? lol!

I've heard the Christian allegory take on this movie before, and largely buy into it. However, I see yet another sinister layer of meaning, in accordance with my pet theory that the two beasts of Revelation 13 symbolize our modern science and technology at large. I believe that the final 666 beast will be an AI (artificial intelligence) which comes as a counterfeit Christ to bring peace to the world, in that all people must worship and obey Him! The robot Gort corresponds to Him! And each person will be closely monitored through our Web of electronic devices in order to make sure we are in perfect obedience.

Like your takes. However, gotta give props to a stellar cast; yeomen actors in their own right.

Spencer Tracy wanted to play Klaatu. Rennie, of course, was the perfect choice. Had Hollywood made Lord of the Rings in the 60s, Rennie would have been Strider. And the music!

I'd argue the short story and film are actually consistent, with a shift of emphasis. The punch line of the story is that the robot is the master. It doesn't seem to be a situation where machine and biological entities work together in a society and in this case the robot happens to be in command; Gnut/Gort uses the term "master." And in the setup Klatuu describes at the end of the film -- Gort is one of an army of fully autonomous peacekeepers authorized to commit genocide -- who is in charge? If the aliens were really "enlightened" you'd think they could come up with a solution that didn't involve giving up their own autonomy.

Being the creator of the video, you would be far more critical than the viewers. It's a natural part of having the guts to make your work public. Robert Wise always had that 'objective' feel to his movies. Not as coldly objective as Kubrick, but it's clear that Wise is concerned with telling a story and not putting his own perspective on it. Wise also denied that 'The Sand Pebbles' was intended as a statement about the Vietnam War. The problem with directors who do a wide variety of film subjects and styles is that they tend to get categorised as 'Studio men/safe pair of hands' instead of versatile. Michael Curtiz is similar to Wise in this way.

Given the undeniable Christian allegory involved, I have always thought The Day the Earth Stood Still would be a far better choice as a Christmas than sentimental warhorses like Miracle on 34th Street and It's a Wonderful Life. Also, The film should be given be credit as one of the best Washington DC location films ever. Note, for example, the two baseball fields then on the Elipse.

As usual I enjoyed watching the review. I don't think the Christian Conservative classification is acurate. A Christlike figure bringing a message of peace and "those who live by the sword die by the sword" was not a conservative view of Christianity in 1951 or now.

I share your opinion on the abomination of the 2008 version of that movie. Two points that always bothered me from the 2008 film. First at the start of the movie Keanu Reeves character the scientist is abducted and disappears. There's no indication that he is kept alive. Instead his brain his mind was scooped and sieved for information about Earth. Traces of the original personality remain in the Klaatu they construct. Think about how terrifying that is. Second life is rare in the universe and the aliens are gathering up samples of biospheres to save it. They then proceed to destroy the Earth. Literally destroying biosphere the biosphere and at the end leave about 5 billion people starving. I guess the aliens figure they'll totally keep the environment intact and not eat all the animals they can find in an effort to stay alive.
