Stormtoopers being terrible shots is a running joke in the community... but it's a light-hearted joke as we know why they were bad shots. We see Stormtroopers be deadly when invading the ship at the beginning. We're then told that Stormtroopers are very accurate as evidenced by their destruction of the little Jawa peddlers. Then before the rescue we see Darth Vader say "She may yet be of some use to us" which indicates they're planning something concerning Leia. Rescue occurs... Stormtroopers hit nothing. They succeed in escaping. We see Darth Vader and Moff Tarkin talking about a tracking device on their ship. And just in case we still didn't understand that they were allowed to escape and that the Stormtroopers were ordered not to kill them... Leia explicitly says "They're tracking us, That's the only reason for the ease of our escape" The entire escape showcases the precision of the Stormtroopers and their dedication to their work as they succeeded in fighting... and a lot of them dieing... while avoiding hitting anyone.

@prescottlange I strongly doubt "emergency leave" was a thing in the Polish resistance, or is in Hamas or the Arakan army. Probably not even in the Ukrainian army recently. @@bluecedar7914 The broader point escaped ewe. That being an official recognition, even if "only" from western armed services, that a death in the family is something that engenders/requires emotional processing even in times of war. Whether they're permitted to leave or not is really immaterial as it pertains to her (and my) point about the minimal display of distress from Luke upon learning of his family's demise. Also, "strong doubts" is proof of nothing. Further, this movie wasn't made by Eastern Europeans, nor especially Hamas. Rather, it was the creation of western minds, and western sensibilities. Which were unambiguously imbued in these characters. Luke wasn't in the "midst of battle"; there was plenty of time ahead for SOME measure of explicit, or even expositional, grief. Instead, they immediately and calmly head off to a bar where, again, Luke appears totally unaffected by the fact his family has just been incinerated. This movie isn't perfect. And that's just one of the reasons why. And no amount of reddit rewrites will ever alter that reality.

@prescottlange The broader point didn't escape mee. Processing often has to wait when present realities demand attention even in non life threatening situations. If you are the one who has to take responsibility for the deceased love one's affairs, shows of emotion often have to wait until immediate responsibilities are met. Not everyone is inclined to be a weeping indecisive mourner in the hours after the shock of losing a loved one, even in horrific circumstances. But I do agree with the movie imperfections point more broadly.
@prescottlange22 сағат бұрын
@@bluecedar7914 There's a lot of space between "weeping indecisive mourner" and some semblance of relatable humanity. So, put away the strawman. Again, this didn't take place in the heat of battle; there was ample time for sorrowful contemplation. On the psychological timeline, not necessarily the film's. It could've easily been handled with 20 seconds of runtime. The fact the main character's family was smoked is no minor detail. It deserved a proper addressing. Hers is a fair point.

They fight poverty, hunger, exhaustion, responsibility, and harm since birth. Farmers usually witness the death of pets, livestock, and likely family members at a young age. It's a harsh life on a harsh desert planet. You can die if you forget your water bottle. There are no days off for farmers: they work on Saturdays, Sundays, Christmas, Easter, their birthday, and even when someone dies, because livestock and chickens must be fed, cattle herded, or vermin defeated. At the age of 19, Luke's practically a grown man on that farm and may have lost SEVERAL family members, friends, and pets by now.

Star Wars did not come out as Star Wars IV A New Hope. It was just Star Wars. They added later the other stuff. Why didn't they start with Chapter 1? Simple Lucas had 6 Chapters outlined and decided to start with Chapter 4 as it had a fair amount of action and the special effects needed were possible. As far as special effects Star Wars broke pretty much every record there was with special effects. They used both practical effects and CGI with much of the CGI added in later editions because unlike most Lucas did the movies in digital format which you can thank Lucas for this being in movie theaters including the digital audio format. By keeping the special effects separate, he could update them as CGI improved. He also destroyed the earlier copies, so it may be worth a nice amount if you have an original copy. Glad I wasn't drinking anything when she called Old Ben, Biden. Many of the scenes were supposed to be humorous, or at least in part. Had you seen it in the theater with a full audience, you would have found that many of the things that you found inappropriately humorous were laughed at by the audience, as they were intended to relieve the tension. For me this and the next movie are the only ones of the 9 chapters worth watching.

The reason Star Wars starts with episode IV is because they weren't sure how it would do at the box office, so they put what they thought was their best chapter forward as a test run. It did so well they decided to go ahead and make the rest of them.

Lucas said in the documentary the original script was just too large for one movie so he broke it up into acts and started with episode four ( 4 th act I believe)
@stuffyouotterlistento1461Күн бұрын
@@mavv-i-am Given how the prequels turned out, I don't buy that Lucas had it all mapped out the entire time. Maybe he had some ideas that he could've fleshed out, but if he'd started with episode 1, I have to believe it would've been very, very different than it eventually turned out to be, and not just because of the state of special effects, and the almost total lack of CGI.

@stuffyouotterlistento1461 and with the whole Luke/Lea love triangle, I seriously doubt that was part of the orriginal script her being his sister. He clearly didn't have a finished script. Clearly had Vadar as Luke's dad, but he starts off as a governor's lacky, then becomes 2nd in command in Empire. That doesnt track.

@@stuffyouotterlistento1461 you're right. There were too many holes that don't mesh. Such as Vader being Luke's father. Obi wan said he betrayed and murdered luke but the later changed it to him being seduced by the dark side. Also in return of the jedi, Luke asked Lea about his mother having no memory of his mother. Lea explained that she was very beautiful yet sad etc. If they were twins and their mother passed away at their births then how is possible for Lea to have known her and Luke not? Gotcha!

Star Wars films are simple, exciting, action-adventure movies that thrill many people and especially children. If you want to try serious science fiction, then I highly recommend “Interstellar” (2014). It is a very serious story, and it’s not for children. I absolutely loved your reactions and commentary. Since I'm 71 I am able to give you some background without spoilers. The 60's and 70's were a much more spiritual time. When these movies came out, the idea of a Force as a spiritual entity with a balance between good and evil was a groundbreaking concept. We had just been through the Vietnam War and The Cold War between the USA and The Soviet Union was still going strong. The only movie that had special effects comparable to this had been 2001 A Space Odyssey. The lack of polished acting also gave it a homey feel and everyone loved the sarcastic banter. We had no home computers or internet, which made C3PO and R2D2 especially likable with their human like traits. My wife also hates sci-fi and Star Wars, so it is not for everybody. Some of the mystery behind the Force will be revealed in the next movie. My oldest step-son and I sat in the lobby of a theatre for over 2 hours waiting to get in to see the next movie in the series, Star Wars V. When we finally got in the only seats were in the second row which I thought would be terrible. But that movie starts out with one of the large Empire ships slowly going overhead which filled up the whole screen. Seeing that in the theatre close up was an experience I'll never forget.

I think the lady was too busy criticizing and not listening to the movie. Many of the questions she says they didn’t explain our explained in the movie. You just weren’t paying attention and focussing on it. Example she asks how Luke is a farmer one day and a fighter pilot the next. When his friend Biggs explains how Luke is one of the best bush pilots he’s ever seen. Luke, like many of his friends, were recruited by the Alliance to go to the Academy and be part of the rebel alliance. He has this conversation in the kitchen with his aunt and uncle as they’re having dinner. He talks about how he’s still stuck there and his friends have already left. These were the friends he used to fly ships with back on his home world competing in competitions like beggars Canyon where they do races. If you pay attention, you would’ve got answers to some of your questions. They assume the audience is paying attention and they don’t have to spell it out step-by-step like in today’s movies because the audience has no intention span and to be honest they’re pretty stupid. Many older movies give breadcrumbs of information for the audience to try and piece it together instead of just slapping it in your face because you don’t have the capacity to pay attention and think. Many new films nowadays I don’t watch their films for idiots.

When someone can't shut up and focus, and has no ability to understand what they're watching, it's because they have a low I.Q. There's actually quite a lot going on in Star Wars. It was extremely ambitious for its time, and you can expect somebody to miss, or at least forget, some points the first time through. And that goes double if they're a reactor who has to entertain you, and who is put on the spot at the end of the movie and expected to talk about it in length. There's also a difference between mentioning something in a movie and selling it.

1. Sir. Alec Guinness/Obi-Wan didn't want the part. Being a Shakespearian actor, he thought the entire idea was silly and was beneath him, but his wife talked him into taking the part. 2. The shrug Chewy gives Luke after he scares the tiny black droid is 🤣 3. These movies were put out in a certain order because there was limited technology and Lucas used and pushed forward the images needed to make a quality product. The best way to watch the is in the order they came out. We had to wait years for the next one. There was no internet where we had access to them whenever we wanted. 4. No need to go into anything after VI. Disney took over and the quality dropped. I realize you have to. 5. The only CGI was put in for the 25th anniversary package in this film are the critters the stormtroopers were riding at the beginning of the search for the robots, a couple of the huge critters outside the pub, the scene with Jabba the Hutt and other minor changes. Those were put in later after CGI was available. Otherwise, everything is what we had in 1977. 6. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself after he told Vader he would be stronger than ever. He went back into the force. He knows it's Luke's job to take over. 7. The awkwardness in the detention space is because Ford didn't know his lines. It was kept in the movie anyway because it worked. 8. IMVHO the next two are the best of the series. Enjoy 9. RIP James Earl Jones 😇 10. RIP Carrie Fisher😇

I liked him as old obiwan. I can agree the acting in general wasn't strong, as they were mostly new to it, but it doesn't bother me at all, to the point that I don't think it could have been any better. Let's not forget Lucas or whoever wrote the movie isn't the best either, and Mark Hamil was making fun of some of his lines in interviews. Nobody thought this was going to be a hit movie and they were in vacation instead of being at the awards, they won some

Well she said she didn't know why obiwan vanished but she already guessed it. Became one with the force, as a force ghost - so now he is acting as Luke's guardian angel of sorts. It is explained somewhat at the end of episode 3, that they learned how to communicate with the dead. Also it's ok, tell her Luke burried his uncles off-screen, it's not important to be shown for the movie:) the movie has a lot of jump cuts and transitions anyway

As far as the pacing goes: Obviously any individual movie can break a trend, but movie pacing four to five decades ago tended to be slower. Sometimes movies back then could unnecessarily draw things out, but at the same time, sometimes people today (and the movies made for them) don't have the patience for a scene to properly develop, and prefer a frenetic pace more akin to TikTok videos. I actually think Star Wars moves along pretty decently, but it doesn't do quick cuts, and some of its science fiction storytelling concepts are commonplace today, while they were much more ambitious back then, at least for a general audience, so just keeping up with the plot was more likely to have people riveted.

Funny that you didn't like the lack of explanation for what was going on because to SW fans, that mystery is part of the SW experience, as a quasi-religion. Those fans actually got upset when, in later films, Lucas tried to fill in the blanks. Know too, that NOBODY except Lucas had any faith in this film, not the actors, the crew and especially not the studio who signed away the merchandising rights of the film to Lucas who made so much money from that, he walked in to the next film fully financed on his own. At that point, he could begin to flesh out the world-building so it made more sense. "A New Hope" is fun on its own but Lucas' trilogy is what solidifies this franchise. Lucas had extensively studied mythologist Joseph Campbell's famous books about human cultures' shared "Hero's Journey" motif and incorporated it into his Star Wars films.

While I have no real opinion on over an hour's worth of trashing, it's important to remember that _Star Wars_ is, legitimately, a franchise for young children. Seriously. George Lucas has gone on record saying it, including, quite famously, saying that dialogue was truly no more important to him than a means to get from one action sequence to another. It's not meant to make sense, it's not meant to be coherent--it's truly the epitome of not just a "popcorn movie", but a "popcorn _franchise"._ I really like the movies, all of them. I like them because I take them as they are--low-brow, fun, meaningless space fantasy. 🌈🖖

I am writing this before I start watching the reaction. The effects are practical of course, but groundbreaking at the time. However in 1997, George Lucas created the special editions and released the original trilogy into theaters, months between each film. He redid a lot of special effects. Added cgi stuff. Completely amazing at the time but not all of the shots aged well for today. Added scenes and altered others. Jabba and Boba Fett scene on Tatooine was a deleted scene added into this. That's why for the original Star Wars there was a Boba Fett action figure but he was not in the actual original movie. When Han says Jabba is a human being, that's because he was played by a human, they replaced him with cgi Jabba for the special edition. Han and Greedo scene George altered who shot first and they did a crap effect for Han dodging a laser bullet from Greedos gun. You can still see some of the original effects, but anything that looks obvious cgi was def added later. Without watching the reaction yet I'm guessing you saw the special edition at minimum, George definitely altered them further later, one such change in Return of the Jedi will prolly confuse the fudge out of Lucy, until she watches the prequels. But basically George made the original cuts of the films unavailable anywhere. So people can only watch these altered versions. Though there are some fans who have worked tirelessly to obtain footage from the original versions in what they would call "Despecialized editions"

Star Wars Episodes V The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI Return of The Jedi will explain more of your answers. One reason that Luke did not react as much was that in the 1970's we were told to move on. That you can have a moment but that you needed to keep moving. WE were taught resiliency. Luke and Princess Leia had the Loss of Family members. LUke had his Aunt and Uncle die and Princess Leia had her Planet blown up. I’m not a big fan of the genre either. But I do love STAR WARS, and by Star Wars, I mean this original movie - every sequel and prequel I have seen has drained all the campy joy from this first movie. This was Lucas’s love letter to Akira Kurosawa’s samurai films (especially THE HIDDEN FORTRESS) combined with the Flash Gordon serials that used to be shown in theaters prior to the main feature. That’s why the acting is the way it is… and it’s also why imperial stormtroopers couldn’t hit one of our main characters with a blast if they were right on top of them. It’s a trope of the adventure serials this movie is referencing that in spite of all logic, the good guy main characters don’t get shot. Unfortunately starting with the first sequel, the movies began to take themselves seriously - and that’s when I checked out.

As harsh as you were on a movie I love, and as nitpicky as you sometimes got, I do think you have some legitimate points, and I quite enjoyed the reaction. I might have had a different response if you had been constantly tearing down the movie while you were watching it, and not giving it a fair chance, but I've no issue with reasoned or even passionate criticism afterwards. One thing I would like to impress upon you is how much of a giant step forward this movie was in terms of special effects. Lucas created his own special effects company in order to be able to do it, because he didn't have the proper tools to work with back then. I think the '90s CGI added in the special editions sadly cheapens the original practical effects (and just generally looks cheap and dated now). Of course, the historical context for the movie might not make it any more entertaining for you, but it's still a good reason to cut it some slack. It had cool spaceships and lasers and stuff like nothing before ever had, and that's just a cool vibe. And while I think "it's just a kid's movie" is a cop out, I do think it's not meant to be taken overly seriously. Calling it "a romp" might be going a bit too far, but it's a step in that direction. You know how you let cartoons get away with some stuff because they're cartoons? This is similar.

There are people who live to 💩 on things that others enjoy. When you're with them, you are always moments away from being told that something you have done, are doing, or have thought, or believe, or like, is wrong, or bad, or annoying. They will take the very thing that makes something worthwhile, and turn that into an intolerable flaw. The Hobbit was built from stories Tolkien made for his children, delivered with dramatic and flowery oration. The Lord of The Rings was the adult outgrowth of The Hobbit. The movies were made to reflect the very dramatic characteristics of his writings, and if they hadn't been, his legion of fans would have been furious and rejected the first movie out of hand. So The Lord of The Rings was "too dramatic". If memory serves, many of the primary actors in Star Wars thought it was kind of silly, and did not expect it to make a dent at the box office. Until they saw the premier, with the special effects, and the incredible soundtrack. A known flaw was Lucas' chronically clumsy dialog, which some of the actors really did not like. But the emotion of Star Wars doesn't come from clever dialog, or insightful direction. It comes from the epic themes of the story, the interweaving of technology and spirituality, and the, say it with me, incredible, profoundly dramatic soundtrack. So in Star Wars, the _dialog_ wasn't dramatic enough. Imagine living with Goldilocks, where some porridge is too hot, and some too cold, and the rest is too lukewarm. Prolonged exposure to that attitude wears on your soul. The _real_ power of the Dark Side isn't anger, it's ever-present criticism, gradually seeping the Force from you, leaving you an empty husk, only to then be abandoned because you're too weak and impotent and boring to be of interest anymore...🪦
