Seeing this and the film "Rewirement" back to back has certainly put this sixty-three-year-old man in a somber mood for the time being. More years behind me than ahead I suppose. Fortunately, a birthday for an eight-year-old and seeing all of my grandchildren this afternoon will break the spell and a greater appreciation for those moments as well.

So very sad, to cheat death by stretching time yet missing out on life's best moments. Nicely done video!

It made me cry. A reminder that life is so short, that to cheat death or our time means we miss out on a lot of things just to be able to live longer. No matter the excuse, it is never living when we try to cheat whatever time was given to us. Live life to the fullest without regrets. Live it with love and with the people you love. It is the best way to spend the time given to you.

This was not the mom's fault. That was one painfully tough call, one where I couldn't condemn her (or wouldn't want to) either way. She had a condition which forced her to choose between a very short life of her own or a very short one with her family, mainly her daughter. I was truly moved by this one, and I won't go into detail. 😥 This was award worthy in my humblest opinion.

It does make me wonder which would be more devastating to the daughter....Having the mother gone at 5 years old and having barely known the mother at all or seeing her basically once a decade and enjoying the little bit of time with her and then having to watch her go away over and over again. Awesome film!! 👍👍👍

I would say the latter is much worse, the way it was in the short. As much as I would hate to lose either parent, it'd be much "better" to have lost altogether even after a short time with them rather than an intermittent, yet ongoing loss of them. You can at least learn to live without someone who dropped out of your life. But if they keep reappearing through long spaces, it wears on your psychology and just becomes unbearable.

WOW!! What a creative, original way to explore connectedness, time and the unique bonds of love. For boring reasons I'm able to recall life when I was old enough to put my bottle away for the final time. And I remember having german measles as well as my cot. I can recall almost everything from the scratchy face and worn hands of my father and the soft warmth of my mother's hands as she made a point of naming everything. These are precious everyday bittersweet things that parents do for their kids to become independent. In time I understood that my laser recall was uncommon. This ability is a gift that I took for granted until people died. Love, I believe, can be a map and a vehicle with which we move through life. It's tangible just like my hand. When your own children arrive, it's an epiphany; life born anew links where we were with when we are and, if we are very lucky we understand the meaning and full measure of the importance of living in the moment. I'm able to link the time I saw dust motes drifting through the first light of day. And in turn sharing the same experience with each of my kids. And again with my mother just moments before I felt the absence of another life. We spend so much time working to make a future for our kids. And we do. I've learned that our children live in the moment, insulated from a past that become stale the more you relive it: love makes the moment fresh and invaluable for those with whom meaning is given. Each moment is a shock like our first breath. Family (through blood or good fortune are everything worthwhile in any single moment.

My daughter was 23. She died in December. This film really has me in tears right now as well. I missed a lot of my daughter's life of course not by choice but my ex is a horrible monster that kept me away from her. I have always been told that one must not hate anyone else. It messes with the cardinal rule. Hannah (my daughter) was severely autistic and non verbal. I guess my ex hates me more than words can say because every time something happened with Hannah (such as autistic shortcomings) I was always the one she would throw the blame at. This really stirred the emotional pot within me and allowed me to do something that I think really needed to happen. I'm still crying.

Amazing short, I loved it! Anyway, I found it a tragic story. The little girl deserves a real mother who takes care of her every day, not a ghost who goes and see her every 5 years. The most realistic sequence is when the girl is a teen and refuses to see her mother, because their are actually strangers. Like the relatives who live on the other side of the globe and come and see you once evry 5 years: they just can say "Oh, you are so grown up!". Furthermore I would never EVER want to see my daughter older than me. BTW, I had the same reaction watching _Interstellar_ (2014)

Haldeman's "Worlds" & "Worlds Apart" were good too..as was his first contact novel - the title of which escapes me. Many of these short films are base on old novels & stories many people haven't heard of......it doesn't mean DUST is no good - I like the channel. But I have a feeling that if all these film-makers are 100% honest, they'll 'fess up & admit the influence's of earlier SF books....I know this is true, 'cause I've read lots SF books, & I've seen their plots & ideas reused on many occasions. Yeah the "Forever War" looks like it's having trouble getting sufficient backing, as is Lovecraft's "The Mountains of Madness" - which would have been some film - & surprisingly, the Avatar sequel might never get made, for the same reason.
@DiandraStarShine
@DiandraStarShine 4 жыл бұрын
@@kufujitsu that's not at all a secret or dishonest.🙄 because it's a very well known FACT, among science-fiction fans & storytellers, esp., older teens & adults - that *THAT'S* how sci-fi storytelling often works: many of the writers of books & movies, they DELIBERATELY pay homage - somewhere or in many places, in each one of in most of their works..homage to those writers and stories that were already existing previously..it's actually *'a thing,'* like a handshake or a nod to the others that came before..and *most* sci-fi writers and fans are aware of this because it's *very much done on purpose.* so, either you are *fairly young* and/or new to the genre *or* you somehow missed the well known FACT that it's not at all a secret aspect of the genre..ever since after the very first generation of science-fiction writers put out their own projects..which is why sci-fi is one of the few, of not the ONLY genre of creative/intellectual properties that are rarely the subject of copyright disputes vs. the number of copyright disputes re: other categories of creativity..because of the 'sci-fi family' bond and what the subject matter, overall, means to so many of us..and when there have been disputes, it's commonly been over blatant, actual *plagiarism,* which is a very different thing and those who do *that,* they *should* be taken to court. and what are you talking about re: Avatar 2 and copyright concerns?? because, *no,* and there are indeed plans for more of that storytelling from James Cameron [and for more than just one sequel] and many of the actors for the 2nd installment have been secured. so, you should study up on the *REAL* reason for the delays before posting such nonsense again..because it has nothing to do with copyright issues.🤦🏽‍♀️ rather it has to do with a few important *other* things, including certain *very challenging practical aspects* of exactly what it *is* that they want to bring to the public, how *exactly* to get it done. similar to what the issues were with the movie, *Contact (1997)* being made..which was produced *before* CGI was available and also before other currently existing computer programs were invented..so they had to hire people *just* to CREATE computer programs from scratch, in order to get *that* film made in the way they really wanted to present it to audiences.

Not too sure I'd want to fast forward and see my children grow old and dying. This film was well played and touched me. Lost my mother over thirty years ago. Still miss her very much. Time has lessened the loss. If she came back now, I'd know it was not real. Perhaps in the future things will be different. For now I'll accept the natural order of life. I despise when the characters in the story are told or whisper the dialog you can never hear, trying to make it endearing...it never works...other than that, I thought it was a brainstorming, thought provoking idea of how time was used...fresh, breath taking scenery along with some tech ideas(at least, ideas I never heard/thought of)that are new...I like how the timeline fits into a possible future that is very nearby along with the symbolism of keeping nature in the mind of the viewer...great acting with a superb storyline...this makes me ecstatic to say, "I'm glad the lines/borders are being blurred from what mainstream cinema feeds us to a fantastic, meaningful short film a DUST YT video presents to its audience"...would love to give the middle finger and cram this up hollyweird's , you know what!!!...Beautiful, thanx again!!!....time well spent💖...could definitely pull this off as full, featured Christmas/holiday film!!!...GOOD LUCK in future endeavors.

That was so sad, my mom passed away in 2018 and I still cry for her every day. But having her like this would have hurt more. This poor girl had to watch her mother die every day of her life and she never was able to have any closure. Excellent film and great cast, I really enjoyed the special effects, I can really imagine living with that tech, all the drones everywhere, and it was nice to see a movie filmed in the future that didn’t have a plot line where the robots or AI rebelled and took over mankind. It was also refreshing to see the future looking clean and fresh, most future movies go for the grange overpopulated globalist multicultural mish mash. I would love to see humanity take their technology to this level where freedom still rings and going ice skating or playing in the park are still a thing.

Going at near light speed would help make certain things more practical, like colonization of the stars and terraforming. Since terraforming takes decades or centuries, the best way to accomplish this without going off track over generations would be to send a ship off at somewhere near c.

The most obvious problem I have with this video is the *COMMUNICATION* . Even travelling fast (2 years in 60), she can *talk* with her daughter, all the time. Videos can be sent back and forth, all the time. She could have been "there" at least in this sense all her life. I would have prefered that the movie would have included this aspect, making it maybe less dramatic / sad, but nonetheless fascinating, realistic and I would say emotional enough. It was not necessary to cut even that. Besides that, yes, moving, well done, interesting way to present the future... all ok, it is a good movie, but with that it would have been *fantastic* .

That was so good! @ first, I wasn't sure why the Mum was going forwards in time & skipping big chunks of her daughter's life. It made sense later on; she was ill & didn't have long to live. Great plot. Jo Armeniox, (the Mum), is gorgeous too!

Why every 7 years, so far apart in time. Why not once every year??? Or even twice a year??

if they chose twice a year, your comment would ask why not every month? in the end it's just a story choice, but we can assume that if you've only got two years to live, that you'd want to be sparing with it to be sure you did make it to the end of your daughter's life at least.

Maybe due to the costs associated with travelling to space and back to earth
@pufthemajicdragon

The answer to that question ultimately lies in 2 other questions: 1. How fast are they traveling? 2. How far are they going? If we could get a ship traveling close to c, 7 years would be just about right for a round-trip to Alpha Centauri. More likely we're talking a tiny fraction of c and traveling just within our own solar system. In any case, she'd be gone for however long it took to reach her destination, do whatever science stuff she signed up to do, and return.

One of the best Sci-fi I've ever seen. Very creative plot. Even with near light speed travel death would eventually come. I don't want a temporary solution. I want a forever fix. That's why I trust in Christ who gives me the promise of a life that will not end. Come join us.

To believe a promise made by some guy 2000 years ago, which is both completely impossible as well as evil and decieving? No, thanks.

Powerful! Emotionally charged right from the start. We can presume the daughter sees a natural death, but what of the Mother? Does she now stop her treatment and perish, her initial goal fulfilled?

I was hoping that mother and daughter took a final trip together into space, so the daughter could see what her mom's been doing all that time. When they did that space sequence near the end that's exactly what I thought they were doing - and then they brought it back to Earth in the hospice room and I was so disappointed.

This is based (I think) on Einstein's theory of light speed travel, it basically says that time will move slower for all of us not moving at light speed. So if you had 2 years left to live and you wanted to be there for all the important events of your child's life, then you could. It isnt the natural order of things though is it?
@majorhawker4776
@majorhawker4776 5 жыл бұрын
Close but in reverse. The faster you go the slower time will be. This is just a theory, and like every other theory it is only missing the final fact. In this case being able to travel faster then light. The other part would be does time translate in the universe. Man created Time. The universe has no time or clock, it is infinite and finite at the same time.

@@lucyk2371 I am glad I could help. It was a touching piece though. What choice would we make as a parent, knowing we could have two great years or see our kids 10 or 11 times and see how they turn out. I still don't know which way I would go as a father. I have been daddy, Coach and Mentor to my kids over the last 16 and 14 years. I just don't know which is better.
