Hi everyone, Adrián here - the director of NEVEN. I'm really excited to share our film with all of you here on DUST! Neven is a story about love, friendship and hope. The film was created in cooperation with Theatre Divadlo z Pasáže - community theater in Slovakia working with actors with Down syndrome. One of the main themes of the film is an exploration of what it means to go on living when there seems to be no road ahead. Story about characters overcoming their demons, leaving bad experiences of life behind and trying to find hope for a better future. We created this film without a budget and shot it during the height of the pandemic. Just a bunch of friends with their own gear and crazy ideas. Took me six months to create almost 200 vfx shots, which seemed impossible at the beginning. I lost my father during that time and war started in our neighbouring country. Working on this film helped me get through those hard times. I’m happy that I can share with all of you our journey. I hope you will enjoy it!

Beautiful post-apocalyptic movie. Let's make sure this scenario never happens, people. Neither the nuclear holocaust, nor the war with thinking machines. BTW: The composer of the soundtrack for this movie is Keosz. He is a great drone/ambient music producer and he did a great job on the soundtrack of this movie too.

Amazing work. Everything is great about this little film. Everything. Every person excelled at their task and this gem is the result. Its a testament to the fact that the best stories have themes that are universal, with not even one word of dialog required to convey a story that everyone can recognize, relate to, understand and empathize with completely. Well done! (We need more films like this.....genuine films that just tell a great story that everyone really feels and relates to. Hollywood makes films that they call "inclusive", which is nothing but a ridiculous and hypocritical buzzword, as they go to great effort to exclude as many people as possible. They're doing the opposite of 'bringing everyone together' by vilifying, ostracizing and antagonizing except for the tiny micro-percentile that are the current 'chosen'. It's no wonder that they are losing hundreds of billions as their arrogance knows no bounds. This tiny 'zero budget' labour of love is more genuinely inclusive, by simply being relatable to everyone, than movies with half a billion dollar budgets and with a literal army of writers.)

So well done and shows a side of humanity we need in our lives right now. This is sole stirring and got me imaging a whole back story - a prequel of sorts - of this kid being taken in by a survivalist couple after his family was wiped out. They would not let him in at first but after finding he was a downs kid were amazed he survived on his own. This forced them to look at themselves and realize how hardened they had become, and that although he was resourceful he would most likely die on his own... they softened, relented and took him in. What they thought was a burden, as time passed, through this child they regained some of the humanity they had lost. They found joy in him and in an almost military style with constant repetition trained him to survive in this environment so even if they were no longer around he would survive. The planting of the tree was a plan that he had with his family before the war and was a quest he was driven to complete by himself in memory of his family. Does he get back to his new family , was he on his own after completing this? It could be they were tragically lost which fits a solom story of this nature...or a surprise ending with a reunion with his new surrogate family and they eventually find others like themselves. For myself, I like the happy ending.
@SynthoidSounds9 ай бұрын
Beautifully done, absolutely one of the best productions yet presented by DUST. The overall backstory is common enough, some sort of global nuclear war catastrophe with AI military machinery gone amok, although it might be helpful to know a bit more how this came about. The relevance here are the family scenes starting out, fast forward to the apocalypse, but even in that darkness, friendship and love is still possible, albeit with an AI critter. His mission to plant that tree, recreate the beautiful moment, closure with his previous family. Fantastic cinemaphotography, a real work of art start to finish.

In his TED talk, Andrew Stanton says, "Make me care." That's what the audience wants. This film made me care. Excellent work. I have a few notes as a former film instructor. Here's what took me out of the story first. His boots. For someone walking around for years, his boots look mighty clean. Maybe he just picked up a new pair? Otherwise, costumes, props, production design, locations, and visual effects were excellent. Then there is the story of the protagonist. How does he not have Down Syndrome at the beginning of the story? It was hard for me to accept that reality. The final note would be about the technology. NEVEN has pinpoint laser accuracy and the large robots can't hit something 20 feet away? They are massive robots and they can "suddenly" appear. I would have easily accepted broken /mangled robots as clumsy. Great work! Looking forward to more!

But I have to admit that while watching it, ever since the scene where Peter left his father's smoking pipe behind, I was hoping that at some point the dogbot NEVEN would have seen it where it was left, and bring it back to Peter, following him until NEVEN could return it. It would have made for a touching moment of the bond created between NEVEN and Peter. Just an observation.
