With all due respect for the crew and talent who made this, here's my main issue with this short: I felt like it dragged for way too long, to never answer or hint at an answer for a question that we never really even understand what it supposed to be. What I mean by this is the following: As an audience I wasn't sure what was the question that the main character was struggling with; her mental health? She disappearing? The "friend" or "stranger" who is always next to her? I understand that all these could be questions that keep us intrigued. But the dialogue gave us absolutely nothing to even ask ourselves of what's happening, it just felt like it was the same scene over and over: 1)The character breaths hard and tries to remember something. 2) Second character comes and asks if she's okay, and kind of comforts her? 3) The character says she's confused and says she wants to be alone. 4) Character leaves to another location. 5) Repeat for 15 minutes. 6) "Plot Twist" kind of ending. This kind of plot issues and the lack of character-arcs, as so for trouble with performance consistency, usually comes from the Director being the Cinematographer since it's extremely hard to pull off, but if you're also operating and pulling focus yourself, it just adds to having to drag your attention as a director on getting a nice image instead of attention to detail and adjustments in performances. Like I said, I'm no critic. I just wanted to leave my honest and hopefully constructive criticism. I'm a starting filmmaker and have made two short films, which they're complete shit, so I don't want to sound like I know it all, because I'm just like River, I don't know anything.

As far as I can work out, Amanda is dead and River is reliving Amanda's last moments. The 4 men in the woods killed Amanda after Amanda's car broke down in the woods. From the lack of decay, Amanda died recently. The lights River sees above in her vision are the lights reported by those who have a near death experience, these lights are what Amanda saw when she died, however, Amanda refused to go-into-the-light until her body was found. Once River found Amanda's body - Amanda vanished, presumably finally accepting the light of death.

It's doesn't feel like the initial concept for this short was considered for long enough. It felt like someone had an idea and shot the movie immediately and forgot to do any editing. I'd encourage you to take this short, cut out anything that is duplicated more than a couple of times. Cut out all the long sequences that don't add any new information to the plot, then look at the flow of what is left and find the gaps in the narrative that lets the audience have some understand what is happening; check for continuity. Have the actresses rehearse until it feels natural and they look natural and go from there. You might only have a six-minute film in the end but 6 minutes of greatness is better than 16 (I had to forward to the last minute before the end) of less than mediocre.

First Dust film I did not enjoy.
@amatulic42292 жыл бұрын
This film doesn't go anywhere, pacing is way off (you can watch it at 2X speed), it forms questions without answers, and doesn't really have a resolution. From the other comments by the filmmaker, the goal of this seems to have been to secure financing for something bigger (and hopefully better).

We should stop saying anything. There is an answer to anything. We should all say “we are stupid and you are great. @@Shewolffilms Glad you had a good year. I agree that I was confused and disappointed with this short film. I think many of the viewers agree and we mean no disrespect. It’s just an honest observation. But maybe you can enlighten me. Can you explain the plot and ending? Is she dead? How is she now the better species? Who is her watcher and how did she become that?
@Shewolffilms3 жыл бұрын
i_wakeup_4_makeup the short is the concept for the feature film, I didnt want to answer questions in the short that the feature was going to answer. It was meant to leave ppl wanting to know more, which the investors wanted more and financed the feature not even 3 months later. The feature film of River comes out this summer and those questions are answered. The viewers that left comments were less than how many ppl actually watched the short, art will forever be subjective.
@Stormageddon813 жыл бұрын
@@Shewolffilms Then market it as a trailer? A short isn't supposed to leave everyone confused as to what they just watched. Yeah, art is subjective, but you have a ton of comments from people saying one thing. Congrats that it's being turned into a film. However, the people who have seen this "short" are going to remember the negative aspects and your excuses. So, will they even want to see a film long hair commercial?
@Shewolffilms3 жыл бұрын
Lis Cohorn no excuses here friend, apparently Dust loved my short of have it on here that’s why they asked me. To each their own and never said this was a trailer, shorts don’t have to have a beginning middle and end. most filmmakers who make shorts hope to make a feature or tv series. Most shorts you’re thrown into the middle and there’s usually lots of unanswered questions that filmmakers hold off so they can share answers in a feature or series. But thanks for taking the time to voice your dislike and for watching. I appreciate you so very much. 💕

Spot on!! I've never felt so understood! PTSD and Dissociative disorders must be like this sometimes for some people. Snapshots of time, often repeated but shuffled so that "now" is in the future or the past or when am i? Was the origin a dream/nightmare, or a real event, that then played out again in reality, or again as a dream/nightmare. What happens? Do i react the same next time, before? Why is my hair dry after wrapping it after a shower? How am i carrying a 3rd bag of rubbish out when there were only 2 to begin with and how are there 4 on the kerb already? Why did the match flare-up between my fingers? How am i watching myself standing on a bridge 5 years ago, why does that past self look surprised and why can i remember standing on that bridge and being surprised to see a future self looking out at me? Why do my fingertips suddenly hurt for a moment? What was it for? What's in it? Why? Regards from a Tom :)

Hm, i don't understand all that negative comments here. Its a perfect timed mystery trailer. Plenty of questions and magic signs which make me curious to see more. Even if it would be no trailer, no short, no full film needs to follow any rules. Its art! Its not mandatory for an film to answer questions. Or to have an happy end. DUST, are you guys too busy with counting money that you forgot to place an information and link about the film maker in the description? Im already surprised that you found the time to pin the comment of the film maker on top of the comments!
@johnwatson27753 жыл бұрын
What you say is right to a certain degree. You can do whatever you want and film whatever you want. But in general there are rules. Successful films mostly all base on the Ancient Greek way of telling a story. When it comes to the essence of it. You may not know that. When certain plot points are planted etc. Beginning, life changing incident. climax at the end etc. Here it just starts with a troubled person and as a viewer I have no reason to emphasize with her, because it’s the first thing I get. Also the characters are very one dimensional. There is a person who probably got abducted and that’s terrible and now she’s troubled. The end. That’s boring. A good story and characters need many many different layers. Just as an example it would’ve been interesting for example if something in her maybe even enjoyed it, or feels different now to every other person. Not just waking up and being scared for the sake of being scared.

@@johnwatson2775 Dust have many samples for clips which are just a waste of time. Even they are called "Short Film". To call "River" a short film is for my opinion not correct. As i told already above, its like a trailer. However, bit too long one. Under the aspect to see it as a trailer, is it not needed to develope the characters. It need to show pictures, emotions, questions but not really answers. If you go to Shewolffilms, there is another short, "The Deal". If the complete film of "River" gets the same spirit... it will be worth to watch it.

I don't get it.. this made 0 sense. This was AGONIZING to sit through. The ending? A woman's body, half concealed, (I'm assuming she was dead?) And she asks, "how is this" and the other chic says "because your the better species" the hair girl then asks what the other chic is, and she says "I'm a watcher" (whatever the hell that is) then it ends... WTF?? That basically tells us NOTHING! Also, the chic that kept playing with her hair, was especially aggravating. She seemed to not be able to stop touching her hair. Was it dandruff? Lice? Scabies? I have never been so disappointed and aggravated, after watching a film!
