Interesting Facts: In the preque to “The Thing”l, they were able to identify people who had been imitated because the Things were unable to duplicate inorganic matter, which meant that items such as pins inserted to hold together broken bones and fillings in your teeth would be missing in people that had been taken over. That would certainly be the case for anyone that had a pacemaker as well. When the Thing imitates someone, it perfectly duplicates every cell with such precision than it actually retains the memories, knowledge, and personality of the individual it copies. Norris (the guy who’s chest bursts open, chopping off the doctor’s hands with its bear-trap teeth) had a bad heart, and likely a peacemaker. When the Thing took him over and perfectly imitated him, it also faithfully recreated his heart defect, but not his pacemaker, which eventually caused Norris to suffer a heart attack for real during a high-stress moment. The Thing would have been happy to hide itself in a presumably “dead” body, but it couldn’t tolerate the electro-shocks from the defibrillator and was thus forced to reveal itself. Of course, the amazing scene where Norris’ head separates from his burning body, slides onto the floor, and pulls itself away, transforming into a crab/spider with his upside-down head as its body, and tries to crawl away unnoticed, is an iconic moment! (Incidentally, at the beginning of the movie, the spaceship was flying erratically because the crew was desperately trying to fight off the Things that were aboard their vessel and causing havoc. That’s why the spaceship attempted to make an emergency landing on the nearest planet and ended up crash landing in the Antarctic. Only one of the Things as survived the crash and made it out of the ship alive, only to freeze in the ice.)

They only stopped using dogsleds in Antarctica during the 90s because they posed a threat to seals, dogsleds are actually pretty great for traveling over frozen terrain.

The dog at the beginning, whose real name was Jed, was a wolf-husky hybrid. He was in several movies. He was born in 1977 and died in 1995. I've seen Norwegian rectors react to this movie, for example Centane, and they translated what the Norwegian was saying at the beginning. He was saying, "It's not a dog. It's some kind of thing." The composer, Ennio Morricone, was not allowed to see a foot of film and had to produce the music as a sort of kit for Carpenter to apply as he saw fit.

My favorite horror movie. I cant think of a worse scenario to find yourself in. Youre battling an intelligent enemy, you dont know if its malicious or simply trying to survive, if it touches you...youre dead, its almost impossible to detect, it can only be killed with fire/acid and if it gets to water or transportation its not just the end of humans but THE ENTIRE WORLD. Every Winter when the wind howls i think of this movie. It inspired me to get a flamethrower cause...you never know 😅

Also, this is based on a 1951 movie called "The Thing From Another World," that's excellent, but has never been reacted to in KZbin, and that movie is based on a 1938 novella called "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr. Campbell was primarily an editor, but would write a story once in a while. He was a very interesting guy and important to the history of science fiction, but that's a whole other story.

You're the first reactor I've seen question the dog; good survival instincts! And the practical effects were just totally amazing. Unfortunately the 2011 prequel (which covers the Norwegians) did the franchise a bit of a disservice with its overuse of CGI, but still worth checking out if you enjoyed this.

@@WarpReactor A lot of people think it's a remake because it's also just titled "The Thing", but it is a prequel, and yeah, it uses way too much cgi. But it is kind of fun to see how the Norwegian camp ended up the way they found it in this movie.

The creature was dropping parts of itself throughout and finally reamalgamated to form the T. Rex at the end. And that was the creature that helped Blair make the tunnel and ship. I mean, it could burrow through ice!

21:21 Yes. It digests him, absorbs him. It leaves no body behind, it's a definitive process, the person gets eaten, and the alien cells imitate perfectly the victim. That's the reason I find a mistake when ppl say "he must be infected" or things like that (even the movie, in some point does it, I think I'm a lousy way); cause what I see is not the person, or his body, it's the alien itself disguised as ur old pal. And every piece can do that. Perhaps even one alien cell? Not so sure about that. It's a similar concept to "The body snatchers" , another wonderful movie.

I used to think so, too, but then I read the novel, "Who goes there?", and there Blair was already infected when he broke everything, knowing they will put him in isolation and he will have time and space to build his spaceship. They found out about it in the end. So now I wonder... 🤔

@@Paul_1971 You're right. Didn't think about it. Not saying it's the same in the movie, just saying it made me wonder. In the novel, Blair didn't leave the shed, on the contrary, he blocked it from the inside, too. They had to burst it open to get in. That's when they found out what's really going on. He was there for a week, building a spaceship, everything that happened with the crew, was the thing's way to keep them busy while building it.

It's common for reactors to suspect that the infection can simply be spread by contact, but the fact is that we never see anybody get taken over that isn't at least somewhat violent. I think a person would definitely know that they had been infected and were being replaced.

They split up at the end because they had a lot of work to finish. Staying together would've meant one maybe two of them would've been idle, and they were on a suicide mission by then.

Childs was The Thing. The assumption is that it is perfectly fine sitting there until they freeze because that is what it wants, but you can see that while McCreedy was speaking there was steam in his breath but not when Childs spoke. It didn’t have a body temperature that would cause it. Love this movie. There is a prequel too, but it lacks the same gravitas as this film.

The Antarctic research station maintained a team of huskies because a dog sled team is the most efficient way to travel through snow and ice over a perpetually frozen landscape. Blair killed all of the dogs to prevent anyone who might have been infected from escaping via a team of sled dogs and reaching another research station, and eventually making it to civilization.

Its similar to a Virus but its not a virus. We never find out exactly what this is, but cutscenes had Doc, Fuchs and Blair talking about a new or different kind of Cell structure and Blair says thats the point I'm not sure it is any kind of cell structure or at least Cell structure as we've known it. So, my thought is theres animal and plant cells, this is simply a new kind of cell, a cellular organism that infiltrates and conquers other cells. We never learn that it has effect on plant cells though.

Also, the movie was intentionally filmed so that a perfect timeline of infections is not achievable. We can get close, but, for example, you never see who goes with Norris and Mac out to the crash, so you can't know who remained at the base, and the room the dog goes into first they used a stunt man for the silhouette instead of a cast member so you can't be sure who was first taken.

I'm sure I'd do better with horror movies now but as a kid, I was utterly terrified of them...full stop :) Of all the 'classic 80s' horror movies the only ones I can remember seeing are the original Nightmare on Elm Street and Nightmare on Elm Street : Dream Warriors (which I think is 3). Strangely enough, as a kid, I LOVED Stephen King. Never saw The Shining (even though I love Jack Nicholson) but I read the book and loved it :) I can't explain it other than a profound fear of visual horror...and The Thing was at the top of my scaredy-cat list! One of the classic questions of this movie is 'were either of them The Thing at the end?' A bunch of folks have said Childs is The Thing because he has no breath fog! Except... he does, if you look close. Also, the idea that The Thing doesn't have breath or warm breath or whatever doesn't make sense because when Bennings had been partially transformed he had a lot of breath fog. There's another intriguing idea that MacReady was infected earlier and much of the plot was him defusing potential threats and manipulating people. Part of that is accepting that there's no reason different infected Things would cooperate or be aware of each other or anything. Another element to all of this is that it seems reasonable to assume that while a regular infection from a single cell is possible, The Thing isn't content to wait around for that process and will attempt any method it can to take life forms.

I love all of these theories! My guess at the end was that Childs was the red herring and Mac was actually The Thing (the 'real' Mac having succumbed to the explosions), but the more I see and read now...the more I'm second guessing the whole movie :D I mean, honest to G-d, what an amazing piece of art that forty years later so much positive debate and genuine mystery remains around the final product. My favourite is the gasoline bottle theory. Mac slips gasoline into the bottle he gave to Childs at the end. Childs drinks it and doesn't react to the gasoline taste like a normal human would, Mac figures out that Childs is The Thing.

this movie is has some of the greatest practical monster effects ever, before cgi could do much more than Tron. But it's not just some schlocky monster movie, it's ALSO brilliant at establishing tension and anxiety. A bottled up environment where people are at each other's throats. And then the music. Man. This was probably the first movie I saw Keith David in, and I've loved him ever since.

I've said this since i was 7, this is the absolute worst and most horrifc fictional situation ever put to film, and likely literature too, animation, Comics/Manga videogames, Religious books all of it, being in winter of Antarctica with this alien preys on primal fears of being eaten/consumed/absorbed and a creature can imitate your former self, friends, dogs everything animal cell. This is horrifying and the very fact they have US Army M2 Nepalm Flamethrowers is their only true saving grace. IF they didn't have these flamethrowers, this movie/situation would be a hell of a lot worse.

Get away from that thing!" or something very close. I watched another reactor that IS Norwegian and she was laughing because she understood what that guy was screaming.

McMurdo is a real US Antarctic outpost. I believe it is the largest US base on the continent. The original 1951 version, while substantially different, is a must see for any true fan of science fiction cinema. The 50’s was a rich breeding ground for science fiction: “The Thing,” “The Fly,” “The Day The Earth Stood Still,” “Invasion of The Body Snatchers” were all remade later. Except for “The Day The Earth Stood Still,” the remakes are pretty good, though you gotta go back and see the originals. I don’t know what list you are using, but I can only hope you aren’t going to dismiss the old flicks in favor of prettier newer movies.

I am using the Rotten Tomatoes Top 150 Sci-Fi movies ( editorial.rottentomatoes.com/guide/essential-sci-fi-movies-of-all-time/ )! When given the choice, I will always default to the older version (or whatever version the list presents). I normally despise remakes or 'tech-up' reboots. You can listen to "Who goes there?" by John Campbell audiobook. There's an explanation about howi t works with the thing's biomass when it imitates someone. There are also no Norwegians in the story, the americans are those who find the thing frozen in the ice, so you can see what happens from the moment they find it, while it's free, and to the moment they kill it. It's short, and great story.

Now you have to watch the 2011 movie The Thing. It's the prequel story that tells the story of the Norwegian scientific research center and how they had accidentally discovered the alien space ship by chance. Its make-up and special effects are not as good as the John Carpenter film because it only has video game-like C.G.I.s instead of practical effects. But the writing is very good and it blends into the 1982 movie perfectly.

Windows dropped the keys when he walked in on Bennings being assimilated, thats when the keys were stolen. Who stole it? Either Norris or Palmer and my vote is on Palmer. Go back and rewatch, pay close attention to when Palmer and Norris is in and NOT in scenes.

Definitely going to notice and record the 'missing members' of each scene whenever I do a rewatch! I've started watching a couple videos that theorize on the timeline of contamination, assimilation, etc, and I think I agree with you about Palmer. Also to me Norris seemed to be actively fighting the conversion to the Thing (with his abdominal pain and eventual cardiac arrest). I'm not sure what to make of that since it looked like he was still in a form of self control/awareness before his heart attack (or whatever the medical event was). So much going on in this movie! It amazes me that decades later, theories are still being developed and/or refined. Great stuff, my friend! Thank you!

At the very end, you see MacReady unmask Childs. Look at him chuckle in the last shot, and remember the beginning where Mac gives the computer a drink. That refers to the ending.

Someone else told me that there's a theory that Mac put kerosene in the bottle as a 'tell'. If a human drank it, they would react accordingly but if The Thing drank it...it wouldn't know the difference and act like everything was fine. I still like to imagine a scenario where Childs is human and Mac was turned :) Its absolutely amazing that a 40+ year-old movie can still generate theories and debates. I guess that's one of the definitions of a masterpiece :) Thanks again for watching and all the great info, my friend!

@@WarpReactor Yes, but there's a fatal flaw in that. Right as Childs enters the scene behind him, Mac is lifting the bottle to take a swig. Therefore, the bottle isn't poisoned. Recall the first scene when Mac gives the computer "a drink" when it cheated. (Yes, chess computers at the time did that. Computers didn't become chess champions until about 2001.) Mac and the creature have been "playing chess" all the way through the film. In fact, the script makes chess central to Mac's character. Childs' accepting the drink means he doesn't fear infection, and the terror of infection was real, even if Fuchs and Blair had it wrong. I wouldn't doubt if Mac anticipated Childs would reappear and has his countermove planned. Neither guy is acting in character, and one way of looking at it is both men were spent. Another way, though, is that Mac was trying to unmask Childs. "If either of us have any surprises , we're in no condition . . " But Mac chuckles when Childs takes the drink. Why? It's not a funny situation, and we already know Mac is willing to die to stop the creature. What's Mac's countermove? BTW, I will note that Mac consumes what must be a fatal amount of alcohol during the course of the movie! The hard drinker who can hold a superhuman amount of alcohol is a very common, unrealistic, Hollywood trope.

It is the story of desperate men, isolated and hopelessly trapped in the middle of nowhere, caught up in a terrifying life-and-death battle with an inhuman enemy, in which the fate of the entire world hangs in the balance. If you watched the original Halloween, you can see the kids watching the original version of The Thing from the 1950s. So obviously John Carpenter was already a fan. This is a very different film, but the original is worth watching.

It's an awesome whodunit for sure, and actually really interesting to rewatch when you _know_ who is human and who isn't, and see how the imitations act. Re: your question about one creature or different ones; each part acts as (and in practice, is) a separate creature. You can even see things work against each other at some points, e.g. when Norris' head-spider tries to crawl away unseen it's Palmer who exposes it ("You gotta be fuckin' kidding...") -- and Palmer himself is a thing at that point. It's just what the real Palmer would have done, so the imitation... imitates.

The Thing is such a consummate survivor it'll sell out it's own kind to maintain the masquerade and preserve itself. While the ending is ambiguous as to who might be a Thing, it's darkly ironic to think that both men could be Things paranoid that one of them is human.

I tell people all the time that The Thing is arguably the greatest horror movie of all time. Now of course you can definitely make a case for Alien, The Exorcist, and Psycho, but other than that, everything else is 5th and lower.

Having never watched the film, I'm not sure whether I credit you or the movie itself, for building the tension. Sheeesh. By the time it got to spider/dog scene, I had to nope right out of there. (To be fair, I am a complete coward and do not watch the genre.) I jumped forward to get all the commentary goodness at the end. Thanks for another great video.

I personally think berserk Blair was human, and when he's asking to come back, i think he's Thing. The ship is not interstellar, Thing Blair is likely trying to get to a Soviet or a Japanese Station, whatever is the closest station and do it all over again. Thing Blair is NOT trying to eacape and go back home, its looking for the 1st ignorant, unprepared station to infiltrate morr humans and any animals. If it got to the coast it could absorb and imitate Penguins or whales or Orca (that would be really really bad) and make it back to Australia, South America, South Africa or New Zealand, whatever closest land it is with people. Remember this Thing won't likely settle for humans, it will likely take all animal cell organisms and... maybe plant cells, which everything organic would be a thing. That is how serious this is.

Ive always believed Childs was Thing at the end but honestly i do not anymore and here is exactly why. First debunk: Childs is showing breath, its just lighting and you can see it and even if, The Thing is a perfect imitation and it will have human formed lungs and it will breathe like a man. His coat is different. I do not see it, hes been in Antarctica blizzard for 15-30 minutes his navy blue coat will be caked with ice and snow. Now why i don't think Childs is a Thing: IF Childs Thing was true it would do 2 strategies: MacReady is only armed with a Colt Trooper Mk3 .357 Magnum revolver which is useless on Thing but useful on men and if nothing else if you have to do that thing its a good tool for the job. MacReady is unarmed to Thr Thing and i bet as a retribution Childs Thing would just light him up with US Army M2 Nepalm Flamethrower he has strapped to his back. Othsr thing Thing Childs would do is not make contact, not risk because MacReady is the biggest threat behind Blair, Fuchs, Doc Copper, and Childs is a very careful man in this. Fuchs is possible Thing Blair killed him setting him on fire, think about it Fuchs is number one threat, Blair was an easy target once in the tool shed. If its easier to just end Fuchs instead of assimilation, its an important person to have off the chessboard. So if it was Childs i think it would simply not risk confrontation and sit down on other side of camp and go to sleep and freeze. Or it would fry Mac. I honestly do not believe its goal is assimilating Mac as much as removing him off chessboard with the framing of shredded clothes. However yes it is possible Childs is the thing but most of the evidence used in theory or mystery solved videos. This is what i think, Childs is human at the end.

Carpenter is not gentle for people on this film. At first minute you see , there is a big problem. Norwegian are crazy or they are killers on south pole ??? Off course no. Americans have a big problem and can't understand. You look at the film , Carpenter give pressure to you since start and show you , 1 mn before there was nothing. It is not gentle at all for people. This film was not at all to please you. It was Carpenter's choice. People HATED this film just because he was not gentle with them. Young, I saw it and never spoke to anyone because ME , not because the film was bad. Carpenter's carrer was "over" even he made "A monstruous film". Everyone said "Don't look at it." After time Carpenter said "Why didn't you understand before? I made my best on this film and had some money to do it. Now , it's too late for me. I don't care about what you think now !". People says "Sorry, we made a mistake."
