Blair wasn't "going crazy" in the radio room. He was trying to keep The Thing from returning to a populated area.

Nope. Blair was already the Thing at this point, after the autopsy. He destroyed the radio so the others couldn't get help.

@Soopytwist incorrect. The tell is the noose in the tool shed. Blair intended to kill himself, but then Palmer or Norris showed up and turned him.

I originally thought that too but don't forget that the Norwegians exposed a spaceship visible to satellites so humans would be flocking there enmass. Also eventually a search party would be sent to investigate their disappearances.

Blair going infected in the moment of authosy... he beaten the eraser of the pencil, then he, human part to suicide in the cabin but the Blair-thing was to go the laboratory for parts and dress for the cold (the MacReady ropes in the atic), the person that saw Fuzz was Blair... and maybe Fuzz prefec to auto-fire himself went Blair try to convert him.

@mr.nobody6063 buddy that was really hard to follow, but I think I figured you out. So, I know they state that a small particle can take over a person, but we never see anybody get assimilated in any way that wasn't violent, so it makes no sense to think that Blair was slowly undergoing transformation the whole time without even once mentioning it or displaying any discomfort. The fact is that Blair went into the tool shed human, made preparations to hang himself, and then some Thing, either Palmer or Norris, went out there and assimilated him before he could carry out that plan. It's very simple.

The scene where the dog was walking down the hall, stopped and looked in the one room, then moved down the hall to where the guy's shadow was seen. The dog trainer wasn't in the room or anything. That was (I guess you would call it) an ad-lib by the dog.

It’s been 40 years since this movie came out and it’s still one of the best horror movies ever made. More movies (especially sci-fi and horror) need to use as many practical effects like this. I was like 15 when I first saw this and it literally haunted my dreams for almost a month. Also, The Homies: “Please don’t kill the dog”, Me: “Wait for it.” 8:10 There it is.” I love dogs with all my heart, which is why that scene always hurts to watch. Still the dog who played The Thing is one of the best trained dogs I have ever seen in movies.

Imagine how the movie would have gone if the Thing had just gone up to the other dogs and licked their face instead of revealing itself. It would have had backups, Mac would not have seen the creature, no fire alarm getting pulled, MacReady would still be in his room, and no Childs bringing the flamethrower. From there, the thing-dogs would have gone around and played with the other humans, infecting them one at a time.

One of the best science fiction films. I saw it many times in Italy. The profound meaning, the metaphor of this masterpiece by Carpenter, is the paranoia that takes hold of human beings when they see potential dangerous adversaries in their peers and fight against each other instead of being united, all in a closed environment, claustrophobic, even though the outdoor spaces are enormous but uninhabited. There is also another element that must be taken into consideration: our ancestral fear of being infected by our peers or by others. The splendid soundtrack is by Ennio Morricone. Quentin Tarantino declared that he was inspired by Carpenter's "The Thing" when he filmed "The Hateful Eight" and wanted Morricone for the soundtrack at all costs. A couple of curiosities. In reality, there were two Siberian husky dogs trained to play the part of the Thing that Carpenter used. Since digital effects did not exist in 1982, almost everything was created by hand by Rob Bottin and his collaborators. Due to the enormous amount of work and the consequent stress, Bottin ended up in hospital for fifteen days due to a collapse. Greetings from Milan, Italy. P. S. - You are really cute and nice. 🙂🤎🙂

One thing about The Thing that I absolutely love after having watched many reaction vids and shown it to many people, is how almost-everybody at some point in the dog scene seems to get legitimately angry. At first its just "oh wow, thats weird", and then its "Ooooh WOW that's really weird", but at some point basically everyone crosses a boundary into being almost-angry at the scene, like "WHAT?! WHY!? EXPLAIN YOURSELF!"

Fun Facts: - Actors Keith David[Childs] and Kurt Russell [MacReady] have both stated for the fan questions and interviews that both of them weren’t the thing/alien creature - Kurt Russell debunked the fans theories about child’s being the alien, Kurt shook his head “no” and says “that him and John Carpenter have worked on the ending of that movie together a long time,” because it was a horror movie -- but to see what the movie was about, which was paranoia, they didn't know if they knew who they were.” - John Carpenter even said the video game was canon to the movie and Childs was human, and in the comics Both Child’s and MacReady were human and fought the alien creature in 3 comic issues, they were actually saved by a rescue team and continued to fight [The Thing].

@25:05 _He' (Norris) is turning._ The "Thing" can only *immitate biological matter* & never inanimate objects such as a prosthetic limb, tooth retorative filling or a glass eye. *Norris* (the geologist) has a *prosthetic heart-valve* which obviously isn't cloned if & when the thing attacked him. The Thing doesn't necessarily create "clones". If the Thing attacks you and you have fillings or a prosthetic heart-valve it will still be able to take over your body with those things in it... your going by Thing 2011 logic which should not be taken as canon because it was contrived for the film's narrative.

'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' (1979) would be a perfect double feature with 'The Thing'. Great script, great cast, creepy well-done practical effects, and the same kind of intensely suspicious and paranoid atmosphere.

Interesting Facts: Norris is clearly exhibiting chest pain and all of the classic signs of a heart attack and cardiac arrest before he collapses. When the Thing imitates someone, it perfectly duplicates every cell with such precision than it actually retains the memories, knowledge, and personality of the individual it copies. Norris (the guy who’s chest bursts open, chopping off the doctor’s hands with its bear-trap teeth) had a bad heart, and likely a peacemaker. When the Thing took him over and perfectly imitated him, it also faithfully recreated his heart defect, but not his pacemaker, which eventually caused Norris to suffer a heart attack for real during a high-stress moment. The Thing would have been happy to hide itself in a presumably “dead” body, but it couldn’t tolerate the electro-shocks from the defibrillator and was thus forced to reveal itself. In the prequel to “The Thing”, they were able to identify people who had been imitated because the Things were only able to replicate organic matter and were therefore unable to duplicate inorganic matter, which meant that items such as pins inserted to hold together broken bones and fillings in your teeth would be missing in people that had been taken over. That would obviously be the case for anyone like Norris that had a pacemaker as well. They were thus able to identify who was a Thing and who was not by checking for fillings, etc… Of course, the amazing scene where Norris’ head separates from his burning body, slides onto the floor, and pulls itself away, transforming into a crab/spider with his upside-down head as its body, and tries to crawl away unnoticed, is an iconic moment! (Incidentally, at the beginning of the movie, the spaceship was flying erratically because the crew was desperately trying to fight off the Things that were aboard their vessel and causing havoc. That’s why the spaceship attempted to make an emergency landing on the nearest planet and ended up crash landing in the Antarctic. Only one of the Things as survived the crash and made it out of the ship alive, only to freeze in the ice.)

The Thing is, perhaps, one of the masterpieces of horror cinema. John Carpenter did an excellent job, giving us our first look at his famous "Apocalypse Trilogy." I recommend delving into Carpenter's cosmic horror, and since they started with The Thing (1982), The Prince of Darkness (1987) is a metaphysical religious horror, and finally In the Mouth of Madness (1994) (perhaps one of the darkest movies I saw when I was young) - the title speaks for itself. Ha ha ha! All of them with different endings, but equally hopeless for all of humanity. Good reaction by the way. Greetings from Argentina!

The make up effects for this movie were well-done! I suggest reacting to The Fly(1986). It’s another sci fi body horror film starring Jeff Goldblum and throughout the movie he becomes less recognizable with the make up effects!

There are different types of horror, this is that creeping kind of "something is wrong" but you can't put your finger on it. Till, well it happens. This is truly a psychological horror AND creature flick.

My Fav movie of all time!! I watched it in cinema when it came out, it was years ahead of its time special effects wise and as you said many questions the most important is... They said Garry (The man in charge) was the only man who had the keys and access to the blood bank that's why they so strongly suspected him of being the Thing, yet when they did the tests he was "negative" and NOT the Thing so who did get in the blood bank ????? lol

13:59 Ironic only a girl scientist survived events at the Norwegian camp..She thought she got them all, but realized the dog was missing it's jewel collar. An explosion messed up her flame-thrower's aim, and the "dog" ran for it--.took 36 hours for rescue 'copters to find her. She left in one for medical treatment while briefing the other in the air via radio (Thing prequel, 2012, CGI FX couldn't match the real deal ) Fun watching ya spook and gross out!

I totally understand that words sometimes get dropped from sentences when English isn't a person's first language, and I'm not generally one to make fun of when it happens... but you never know, Ellie's suggestion at 35:54 might have worked... it was the one strategy MacCready didn't try.
