I am fairly sure you're meant to strain the water through a cloth filter before treating it, I do bushcraft, and one solution is to run it through a shemagh or bandana, the microbes can hide inside the larger dirt clumps which defeats the point of the iodine tablets. Multiple filtration steps can also be done, such as filtering through stones, moss, sand, then a cloth barrier - this will keep a lot of protozoa and debris from getting through the filter, and make the water easier to clean with iodine tablets.

Sci-Inspi Could you maybe do a vid where you rub your hands really fast together, to produce that characteristic burnt smell, and then collect a sample of the first layers of the stratum corneum from your hand, to see if any skin cells were actually burned off? This is my hypothesis on what happens when we rub our hands as such; the friction generated heat does indeed burn skin cells, but only the superficial, first layer of cells in the stratum corneum. So the superficial layer gets burned off, but because that first cell layer is so thin, the heat is quickly diffused into the rest of the layers and the air, so it only feels warm, not really hot. Iwasnt able to find any info on this myself, so Id appreciate your imput in form of eaither vid or comment. Cuz Im really curious abtbthis, Ive wondered since I was a kid lol

You should've used the P&G coagulant, I've always wondered if it's really that effective.
@agentp66212 жыл бұрын
Try using a water purification treatment with a flocculant included. It reduces the turbidity and then chemically treats the water for a much cleaner water. Chlor-floc is one brand. P&G purifier of water is another one. If I might suggest. Try finding a flocculant like aluminum sulfate (styptic pens or rock salt deodorant tend to be good sources). See how flocculation alone improves the quality of the water. If you remove the solid particles in water. You remove their food. They want to stay near their food. That’s the idea.

The key is to get running water, either stream or lake to stream, rivers are kinda iffy because you don't know if they have nuclear waste in them. FYI! Also it's best to carry a filter straw with you or water filter system, which doesn't contaminate the water that you are drinking. Also you can write down on a piece of paper and laminate it of bleach drops to liters of water or gallons for that fact. Keep it with you just in case you are out in the woods drink something horrible and start to get a little sick to your stomach at least you can take the paper out and look at it to remember what the right amount of drops to water you need in an emergency.

I’ve used a lot of disinfectant and cleaning methods over the years and probably like iodine the least. It’s hard to beat pump style ceramic or engineered fiber filters they’re usually capable of at or below 0.2 micron and pared with say chlorine bleach or iodine can filter and kill everything. I e even tried UV bags which basically just leave filtered water out to be irradiated by the sun in a special bag and nothing is as fast or trustworthy as the pump filters, other than maybe a battery powered filter. In a real pinch I’ve filtered water through quite a few layers of cotton (a shirt folded over many times) and that was able to get the big stuff out and it was iodine after that. Iodine tabs were good as they are solid but I’ve also used bleach, I’m quite small concentrations with good results, maybe a cap full to a gallon if I recall, with a little more in rinse water after washing dishes. I grew up in the back woods and have been outdoorsy my whole life without ever getting sick from food or water (knock on wood), though I have known people that have gotten sick.

@@sci-inspi I watched your “boiled water” test then you followed it up with the life straw, seemed like a pretty good setup; only thing I’m not sure of is how good any of this is filtering out chemicals such as fluids from cars and other man made chemicals that may be present in the water. This is of course strictly for survival since I no longer plan on drinking water straight out the river unless the method used is safe to do so. Happy Holidays.

There is a great deal more opportunity to learn from failed experiments from successful ones that do what you expect. Always filter all the junk can out of water. The particulates hide microbes from antimicrobials and react with antimicrobial rendering them harmless. The first thing you do to water you use to drink is filter or flocculate it to get all the particles out and make it as clear as you can 20 you need as few chemicals as possible.
