Probably just sweat and dirt. There’s naturally going to be some edgy anti-maskers, so it’s worth pointing out that studies have shown that they work, including for individuals (even when crowds are maskless) and in real-world conditions as opposed to laboratory ones. Bit pointless me saying it though, those people don’t really care about “logic” and “science”. They’re too busy breathing in the QAnon cult. I say we put them in some island and dunk diseases there, see what they think then.

I remember when covid hit and there was an N95 shortage on the covid unit, we had to don and doff the same mask over and over again. They told us we were allowed one mask per day, and we could reuse that one mask up to 4-5 days in a row as long as we put a regular mask on top of it. Looking at what’s grown on those Petri dishes, it really puts things into perspective.

Would love to see the condition of the mask in various stages, say after 1 "use" versus 5 "uses", maybe 40 hours would be better? Absolutely loved the electrostatic demo, super cool! One minor caveat is that these masks actually filter the worst at 0.3 micrometers. Anything smaller easily collides with the fibers due to Brownian Motion, anything larger is collected through impaction or electrostatic attraction. That's why these masks are tested at 0.3 micrometers... if it gets a 95% at that size, it probably gets much more at any other size.

Some sizes are filtered out better than others. There are a lot of nuances so I try to be very general given the limitations of presenting information through text on a screen. That's why I also included references.

Is it possible for a medical grade mask to be compostable? I understand that single use is necessary in the medical field, but I’m just wondering if it’s even possible to phase out plastic waste there. There’s so much. Masks, isolation gowns, gloves, caps, needles.. sooo much. Is there a sustainable material that can be waterproof?

For now, I don't think we have the technology. A high enough density is needed in gowns, gloves, and caps so nothing can seep through nor go through, and most of available natural materials can't really provide that. The mask in the video as you know is made of a mix of polyester fibers, which does a great job of trapping bacterias and viruses (which is also the reason pet owners rarely use plastic feeding bowls), and a cloth one doesn't have the same efficiency.

@@CyanideOwl the nose absolutely does not filter everything, it does a good enough job but things can still pass through, and a mask doesn’t block out oxygen in any way, O2 molecules are much smaller than viruses and other particles, and they can easily pass through the mask’s fibers, same goes for CO2. Our nose filters particles smaller than 5 microns and larger than 0,5 microns

I'm just a passing scientist with some thoughts and I have no knowledge of how N95 masks are produced nor do I intend to look too deeply into it. But I do have some thoughts just based on this video: @2:48 I'm sure they've already done testing to show that charging the fibers makes the masks more efficient at filtering debris. I'm curious though because I would imagine that it should have the opposite effect. Imagine bottom-feeders; they have these hairy fibrous appendages that they wave around in the water to filter food out which they then eat---the purpose is to catch food that is passing through the water by collecting them in one place. If the mask is charged, wouldn't that be functionally the same? For the magnet you found, would that have passed through the mask and been inhaled by the you if the mask wasn't charged? Would it have even been there in the first place if the mask wasn't charged? I imagine you would want the mask to repel debris away from you, not attract them. I imagine their experiment would have been something like: (1) An enclosed tube with an opening on one end (2) A device measuring the number of particulates in the tube (3) A mask is placed over the open end of the tube (4) They simulate an environment with a high number of charged particles (maybe something like fiberglass which you would find during home construction) (5) measure the number of particulates that get into the tube without an N95, with a non-charged N95, and with a charged N95. @4:16 This experiment only shows how well the N95 masks blocks bacterial contamination since viruses need a host cell to replicate; they cannot grow on plates by themselves. I imagine for testing against viruses, they would have used what's called a viral plaque assay: (1) a lawn of bacteria is grown on a plate (2) A known quantity of bacteriophage is pushed through the N95 mask (3) They then measure how much bacteria is killed compared to a control group where the bacteriophage was not pushed through the N95. @5:19 A lot of the colonies from the inside and the outside of the mask look like they are from the same type of microbe; how do we know that the ones from the outside of the mask aren't just the microbes that you are breathing through from the inside of the mask? I think the best way to show this would be to have a sterilized mannequin wear the mask and then to swab both inside and outside after a time. That way you know the mannequin cannot be a source of microbial contamination and that if the N95 is truly filtering, then the inside of the mask should be cleaner than the outside. Anyway, good video. It's always good to expose more people to science.

The charge isn't strong enough to attract particles outside of the air current. It is strong only in very short distances (look up inverse-square law). Viruses do not commonly spread as flying single viruses, but within tiny droplets. There are several studies demonstrating that masks do prevent viral infections.

My understanding is that rejection of cloth masks-- which lack the features of the mask in this video -- is usually their main point. Medical grade masks are generally acknowledged as helping reduce inhaled particles. The argument is that whether the amount of reduction is worth the cost of wearing the medical grade mask.
