Thank you Brian. This one really resonated with me to the core. I identify with Dr. Collins on my path to a belief that there is something greater that set everything in motion. I am an engineer, very analytical, but certain events in life changed my atheist tendencies. Great talk, once again, thank you.

One of the best, most nuanced debates on the subject from people we can all admire. I find myself in more agreement with Brian's analysis of the "awe and wonder", but also feel that Francis's position is a very understandable one from his perspective. I began with very non-zero Bayesian priors but wonder how they could be revived - perhaps every diabetic suddenly being cured by an instantaneous change in their DNA or epigenome? But I think Francis is extremely well-placed to bridge the divide between faith-based science skeptics and faith-skeptical scientists. I love his focus on data-driven decisions and outcomes. I had no idea of his early physics background. His blend of medicine, science, and administration make him a national treasure.

Francis Collins states he is a “born again Christian” and Bible believer. How can an otherwise intelligent individual like Francis Collins, promote belief in an invisible sky dada, who loves him and is literally following him around with a bag of miracles out of which to "bless" him with. And ultimately an invisible sky dada that will levitate him from his casket to pleasure paradise for infinity. How is it possible to actually believe that about oneself, with no evidence whatsoever, and yet have a fair amount of intelligence. It is called terror of being completely vulnerable to laws of nature, denial of death, and machinations of egocentric superiority of a hairless primate species of which even Francis Collins admits he is a member of. One side of his brain is intelligent and critical thinking, but the other more dominating side is obviously in DENIAL, and paralyzed with existential terror and egocentricity. Collins admits to being a believer according to the Christian religion and bible. The Christian religion teaches it’s biblical prophesy, of eternal torture in a sulfuric lake of fire for all of humanity who don’t buy into the God/Jesus/Holy Ghost myth. Conveniently Collins didn’t address that part of his Bible and belief system.

I'm really glad you spent so much time discussing Dr Collins' belief and the ideas behind it. I wish he would just acknowledge that his belief is not scientific. It seems as if he tries to frame it as influenced by his scientific mindset, but that simply doesn't seem to stand up. All that said, he seems perfectly capable of shaping his religion around science rather than trying to shape science around his religion.
@stefaniamirri1112
@stefaniamirri1112 2 жыл бұрын
To be capable doesnt nean that would be right. If you knew the Biblical you would read clearly there that what you said means to make a religion about the creation rather than the Creator...big mistake, that just diverts people attention to the enemy and steal their soul from honouring the real God. "Scientism" is the name of the "religion" you are talking about, it is already in the mindset of many as you..but it is not the right one as said above, and the Dr here knows it..he is clear, doesn't make your confusion .

True, science doesn't address or aprove faith. It falls outside of it and so it can't disapprove it either. You need something that falls outside causality and the spacetime arrow, and it's also infinifly mightly to create mathimatics and the laws of this physical existance with unimaginable energy and size. The answer to it is mostly found in philosophy and morality; science is not the tool to tell you what your limited mortal life purpose is

So where is your evidence of anything supernatural, outside of your mythical ancient, altered Bible. I have some additional questions for you: If your perfect, benevolent, just, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent God does indeed exist as you claim: 1)Why does your God allow a 6 year old little boy to be abducted, sodomized, tortured, and killed by a serial pedophile? (Does your God watch, or look away) 2)Why doesn’t your God prevent metastatic cancer and brain tumors in children? 3)Why doesn’t your God magically reconnect completely severed spinal cords in children that are subsequently completely paralyzed from their neck down for the remainder of their life? (never has been documented in medical literature) 4)Why doesn’t your God remove and erase 3rd degree burn contracture scars that permanently disfigure a child, and cause pain, and restrict all movement for the rest of her life? (never has been documented in medical literature) 5)Why does your God allow children’s arms and legs to be blown off from a roadside IED explosion, and then why doesn’t he just recreate their arms and legs afterwards? (never has been documented in medical literature). 6)Why does your God allow an innocent child to be struck by lightning, such that he is permanently brain damaged? 7)Why doesn't God give a blind child her vision? 8) If your entire arm was amputated during an accident, do you think after praying for a year, there is any chance at all that you would wake up one morning with a brand new perfect arm that exactly matches your missing arm? (never has been documented in medical literature) 9) Why are over 250,000 babies and children per month across the globe born,only to starve to death because there is no food anywhere. The vultures are even circling them as they are dying. Where is the "manna"? Why does God sit back and allow them to be born, only to starve, suffer, and then die? Where is evidence for your particular benevolent omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent god? Why does your invisible god appear to not exist at all?

I read "Jesus from Outer Space" by Richard Carrier this year. He makes a strong case that Jesus never existed, even as a regular mortal man, never mind as a supernatural man. (Carrier wrote a longer version of this book, also, titled "On the Historicity of Jesus: Why We Might Have Reason for Doubt.") I do think that it is _possible_ that there is some sort of "god" that created the universe, but with thousands of various gods in Earth's various mythologies, I doubt the Christian concept of god is the one who did it.

Dear Brian Greene, I admire the respectfulness and diplomacy that you exhibited during the "religion"portion of this dialogue. I wanted to say thank you for all the books that you have written, as I have read them all. Your unsurpassed brilliance, in addition to your ability to bring complex concepts to to the average individual with such metaphorical eloquence is rare indeed. You have been the most influential writer to me, along with Richard Dawkins. Your book "Until the End of Time" is staggering as well as comforting. Thank you for addressing the existential angst that is ubiquitous with being a temporary sentient biological organism on this earth. Particularly for those of us unwilling to sacrifice our reasoning and intellectual honesty, in exchange for contrived delusions of divine personal deities, individual egocentricity, and eternal grandiosity. You are so humble, genuine, courageous, and sincere and a true genius in the past and present frontiers of string theory and theoretical physics, with knowledge and communication that is as rare as stardust in the universe. Thank you for taking us virtually, on a big part of that journey with you. You are a pioneer and a legend with a future legacy that will last far far into the future.

Genesis says that God created the sun and stars and constellations on the 4th day. So the fist days 4 days couldn’t be 24 hours each because the sun didn’t exist yet and we get our hours from the sun. So the whole 7 days probably isn’t 7 24 hour periods. The word day is made slang by many if not all. To some a day is when it’s light out, to some a day is over after the work is finished, or it is a 24 hour period. But on other planets due to their perspective from the sun, a day is longer or shorter. Let there be light was the Big Bang and it was part of the first “day”or stage of creation.

I love your description of your mother’s homeschooling. I always felt that my way of teaching, although appearing a bit chaotic to those who don’t know what’s going on, was the most natural and interesting way of learning. My favorite saying was, “Play to learn-Learn to play.” My class was once so involved with our math that we missed our lunch and recess! They had absolutely no regret-no moaning or complaining about it-we simply let our principal know and she let us have a late lunch. My kindergartners knew how to tell time to the minute. It all came about with a fun story that teaches that large isn’t necessarily more important than small. I demonstrated how the small hand is more important than the large one. A clock with only the large hand doesn’t help at all-one with only the small hand can give us the approximate time by itself! ⏰ Now, I’ll need to go back and restart this presentation! I admire the intelligence in these two gentlemen. I don’t even come close to their intelligence, but it’s the type of program that keeps me going at my age. Thank you both! God bless you both!

It is interesting that Mr. Collins has this deep trust in the credibility of the Gospels and the descriptions in them. If you ask any historian about the subject, she/he will tell you that these texts contain many errors, discrepancies and contradictions that render them not 100% credible. Also, these texts were NOT written by eyewitnesess; they were written decades later (70s to 90s at best) by anonymous, highly educated Greek speaking people living in various parts of the Roman Empire. So, even if you believe in God, it's not justified logically to do so because of the credibility of these texts. People believe in God because of their "experience" with God.

The Christian Bible has served as a prototype for the worst atrocities against sentient beings.... and all the while referred to as the “holy and divine word of God”. It is no wonder during the 4th century CE, that the corrupt Roman Church Papacy and Bishops contrived what the official "Christian doctrine" would be for millennia to come, and then set up what writings would be put into this new Christian manual which they named the “Holy Bible”. Ironically they chose to incorporate all of the corrupt violent books of the Tanakh as the first 75%. Y'shua (Jesus) was an alleged teacher, carpenter, and zealot leader of the anti roman occupation. He was recruited as the king or messiah that the Jews had been looking for to save them from Roman rule. His life was interpreted many different ways, and even deified by some of the later Jesus cults. However Jesus and his disciples never wrote a word in the bible. It was subsequent self proclaimed ''apostles" who never even met Jesus, and wrote new "Jesus follower" stories decades and centuries after the alleged Jesus' life. The Roman Papacy and Bishops threw out hundreds of "Jesus cult" gospels and writings, only selecting 4 cult gospels obviously copied from each other, and written decades after Jesus death. Those few that would align with their newly contrived "Roman Church doctrine". And then of course they added all the Saul-Paul letters. So this combination of contrived doctrine and assembly of specific writings, brought in support from the Jews, Gentiles, circumcised, uncircumcised, Jesus cult followers, etc.....all for the Roman Church papacy. The format and books were not chosen arbitrarily, but rather strategically customized to fit The Roman Church Papacy doctrine and template for maximum political-religious mandates, power, threats, control, oppression, torture (including of scientists and philosophers), bloodshed, stealing of lands, and plunder. Christian Crusades, Inquisitions, Governments, Dictators, Religious leaders, cult leaders etc, have patterned and justified the worst of atrocities from this supremely corrupt, sadistic, violent “Holy Bible” and god template. By the way, the Roman Church is still here, and possibly the wealthiest most influential and powerful organization on the planet. Their strategic construction of a new Christian religion and bible in the 4th century CE, worked for them exactly as they intended. The Bible has been copied by scribes, translated, modified, and completely altered, tens of thousands of times throughout history. Probably one of the most significant examples being, that over a millennium later 7 books that had been held by Christians as the "holy word of god" for 1000+ yrs, were displaced by the translator Martin Luther in his editing and re-translation, and then completely removed, not at first but eventually by the King James Version included. It's so heartbreaking when a scientist decides to forego critical thinking and decide to rest on the comfortable pillow of 'god did it' and give up on life like this. Dr. Collins didn’t find the god of the Bible. He’s describing Wordsworth’s god: A presence that disturbs me with the joy Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime Of something far more deeply interfused, Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns, And the round ocean and the living air, And the blue sky, and in the mind of man: A motion and a spirit, that impels All thinking things, all objects of all thought, And rolls through all things.

I was impressed with Dr. Collins for personally using his own mind conforming to scientific methodology and logic in processing religious rationale for evidence of an un caused One Creator and not settling down with views from his parent’s. At the same time I was disappointed that he stopped there and didn’t get a chance to analyze Islam as radically monotheistic way of life. And that he didn’t question his parent’s faith about Jesus (pbuh) being designated as son of God vs the concept that he was just a prophet with same God’s message as other prophets. If Jesus (pbuh) is made son of God by virtue of his unusual birth then it should have been the privilege of prophet Adam (pbuh) who didn’t have parents at all. ?!

Mr Francis Collins's incredible precision of thought in recognizing Brian's concerns or suggestions of potential conflicts with instant recall of his deepest convictions and what supports it despite the sheer volume accumulated over more than 4 decades of the highest level of work and its demands. "18 days , 13.55 billion , 13-14 years , more than zero prior" ... exactly how difficult the human genome project entailed yet how easy collaborations can n should be made. Stating without bragging the far reaching effects it has on the most relevant issues corvid 19 or the speed of developing the antiviral , cancer by identifying the more likely successful treatment. Its inspiring to know that such a balanced individual represents science , the US of A n its leadership of future possibilities.

hey brian, random thought i had while watching old videos on string theory and dark matter we already "know" hydrogen is the most fundamental element but what about element -1? could it be that the first element that existed was so unstable that it all collapsed at the moment of the big bang into hydrogen and so on? like a stack of opposing magnetic blocks, at some point the gravity and weight of the blocks outweighs their magnetic force and it can be held in a quasi stable configuration due to gravity pulling them all down on eachother, if you perturb it even slightly, a chain reaction will cause the entire magnet tower to flip and reconfigure on itself until opposite poles are all facing in a more stable configuration with a few defects that are still held down by the other magnets? like a balloon is "stable" until you create a small defect in it and it pops, releasing all of the higher pressure air into the bulk air around it normalizing pressure? .....wow this is long and rambley but seriously, besides quarks, is there something more fundamental than hydrogen?

I say that it is very possible and quite easy to have and use Spirituality and be in touch with God, the Universal Mind, Cosmic Consciousness or whatever you may want to call it *without* religion! I was born into the Christian Church, but now live my life without a Dogma, Doctrine or Religion quite happily. My Karma ran over my Dogma... many years ago. I searched all kinds of Christian Churches, Doctrines, Disciplines, Interpretations or whatever for years, and never found what I was looking for. I didn't really *know* what I was looking for, but I do know I never found it. The closest I came was Unity Church, but left that, mostly because of the Pastor/Preacher. I've come to feel that a Loving God does *not* SEND anyone to Hell. The word "Sin" is an Archery term meaning, "You missed the mark," which has been perverted by religion by taking it to an Extreme with "Hellacious" repercussions. Down through the Ages, religion was created for Population Control and Christianity is no different. The Roman Catholic Church was created to aide the Roman Government of the day to keep the people in Fear. Anyone who makes it to "Heaven" gets there by their deeds and actions. Live against what is accepted as a Good life, and God does not send you to Hell; He simply doesn't Reward you with Heaven. You turned your back on the Reward, thinking you had a better or easier way, so you aren't Rewarded. You send *_yourself_* to Hell. It's also a common saying and/or belief that there is no Fiery Pits of Hell, per se. By living the unkind, treacherous or evil life which you live, through your choices and God-given Free Will, the Hell you see and dwell in is the Life you live here on Earth. Beyond mortal death, many believe you move on in a Spiritual life-form, or Astral Body, the Soul, learning about how and where you went wrong, get lessons on living right, and reincarnate to try again. Some say, That's what Karma is. Mind you, I am *not* saying that Science is bad or evil. I think Science and Spirituality should live and thrive together. One day, I believe this will happen and some of the Questions that are so hard to answer will be fulfilled through that connection with God, the Universal Mind, Cosmic Consciousness or whatever you may want to call it. Quantum Physics used to be closer to it, but Quantum Mechanics seems to have moved away.

At min 16:40 Collins says "God has to be outside of space and outside of time to avoid an infinite regress." Mathematics is like that, outside of time and outside of space. It is immaterial, it does not obey any physical law, it is immune to the Second Law, it is eternal, present everywhere, always true, and it is complete if you take into account the coherence of the system itself, as Penrose affirms. So math is just like God, except that it does not demand you to abstain from eating pork or consecrating your life to certain practices on (inconsistent) moral principles alone. Where there differential equations when the dinosaurs roamed the earth? Did anyone there bother about Fermat's theorems, any of them, not just the last one? Like God, math was irrelevant in the world of the dinosaurs. Now we build bridges and telescopes that allow us to see creation through the eyes of James Watt created by us with great mathematics.

Francis Collins referred to the anti science movement here in the US. But ironically, this problem is being propagated by the same bible believing evangelical Christian movement of which Francis is a member of and vocal advocate for. I wish Francis would stop talking about bible superstition as if it were scientifically, empirically, and historically valid. He is knowledgeable when it comes to genetics, but man does he have a huge case of egocentric and fear based cognitive dissonance when it comes to insisting on his upcoming blissful immortality. Poor Brian Greene had to sit and listen to Francis’ myth based delusions of grandeur, throughout the crux of this discussion. I will mention that in Brian Greene’s book “Until The End of Time”, Brian elaborates so eloquently, courageously, and insightfully on coping with existential issues, without needing to invoke gods or immortality infinitum. I lost much respect for Francis Collins, who in a sense, relapsed into promoting dark age religious ignorance tonight.

Please explain why those Christian denominations are wrong and your evangelical denomination is right. Please be specific. Please tell me about the Abrahmic Tanakh, Talmud, Catholic Bible, Protestant Bible, quarn and Hadith? How do they compare and how do they contrast? Why do you consider some of these authentic and others not? Why do you consider one Abrahamic religious prophet's alleged divine revelation authentic, and another one's not. By what criteria do you pick and choose? When, where, how and by what councils were your Judeo-Christian doctrine and Holy Bible initially put together during the 4th century CE. Why did over 300 years pass after the life of Y'shua (Jesus), before a Christian doctrine and Holy Bible was assembled and made official by the Roman Church Papacy and Bishops. Why did the Roman Catholic Bishops and Papacy, influenced by the pagan Roman emperor Constantine, choose to insert the religion of Judaism and books of the Tanakh to compose the first 73% of their Holy Bible book and doctrine. Why did they select the Pauline letters, based on an alleged vision that disagreed with what Jesus and his disciples preached? Why did Jesus himself not write down a single word? Why is there not writings by even one person who actually met and knew the alleged Jesus placed in the New Testament, Why in the 17th century CE, were 7 book removed from the Bible? These were books that Christians had been reading and interpreting as "God's inspired word" for over 1000 years. Why did the King James Version decide to eventually leave these 7 books out entirely, and what was that decision based on? What evidence do you see today of any supernatural intervention or miracle suspending the laws of gravity, physics, biology, pathology, (natural laws that are constant and predictable). Please refer me to academic, medical, audio, video recordings of any alleged miracles that you know of. Look at your hand; it's made of molecules which are made of atoms. Every one of them in your hand today, was around one million years ago and even further back in a mist of totality. Although you see yourself from the lens of individuality, the fact remains that you, all your cells and even your ideas are connected to others. The importance of good and evil, of beauty and wonder, does not depend on a god or goddess, but on the importance that the well-being of others has in your own life. Collins: you can’t explain morality, you can’t explain what caused the Big Bang, therefore god. Greene: could that not be construed as a god of the gaps argument? Collins: well I suppose, but we will still be left with why there is something rather than nothing, and that can only be answered with God without an infinite regress. Greene: could you not use any term in that way to avoid an infinite regress? Collins: well, suppose, but then you still have morality…

Hi Darwin 42. That is right my souvenir stop at me being some where out of any any univers alone watching arrond few univers. This is where my souvenir stop. I can not explain why I exist, what is my purposes. It's quite embarrassing and painful. Not Abel to answering no one about where I am coming from and why, what and all that. I am sorry it make me not solvable I understand why not be living an me. Sorry. Looking from this point sure I am looking as a charlatan. I not Abel to argue about all from nothing. Now I will evaluate if I should deasapir as before. Not to be in human buissnises. 😎

Well evil stems from immaturity, an underdeveloped view of the macrocosm of societies. Many atheists could be righteous and respectful because they saw the example in their parents, friends or peers. I think humanistic values ought to be taught in school, many kids don't see the best example in their parents and teachers come across as role models. I do believe in God, I think his universal consciousness has always existed before the big bang but I think he also developed his consciousness and created men, he wanted to create and share his power with his children the earthlings. The Dalai Lama says which Big Bang?, there have being many coalescence primordial events in the Universe while the planets were forming. The moon supposedly is an adrift part of the old Earth, so we need to behave good with one another to grow together, to strengthen the efforts, to create schools, villages, towns, societies and countries.

Christ is a "perspective conscientiousness" not a person... Jesus was Jesus of Nazareth that achieved "Christ conscientiousness" to be known as Jesus of Christ. Christ being God. God being the Universe. Please don't complicate it with religion. Jesus was Gnostic not Christian.

Surprised they didn't talk about consciousness or nde's if they wanted to do a fair debate whether god exists or not. Biggest weakness of materialists is they don't know what consciousness is. At least some scientists admit how little they know. The fact is even if some of them knew god existed they wouldn't want to serve him.

Dr. Greene and Mr. Collins, thank you for sharing your insights. Dr Greene a small thought experience, can I ask you put yourself in a creators shoes. Imagine yourself existing just a short time 25,000 years from now, (comparable the human invention of agriculture, or better yet, a fast trip to the center of the Milky Way), don’t put a limit on your lifespan. What kind of a Universe would you create? Would you create one where the intelligent life knows all from the beginning, BORING! Maybe you could imagine one of chance where expansion happens in an instant and life may experience all the wonder of your creation of seeking out mysteries and truth. Or maybe a universe built on one thing, where belief is a manifestation of reality. Please don’t fall into the trap of thinking our own demise. Regards

It's terrible when this is turned into a game. Two thousand years ago the ancients believe Jesus was raised from the dead. Today's physicists believe all of reality is an extended hologram and are still confronted by the explanatory gap of human consciousness.
