I wrote an essay for this painting but never have I been able to see it so up close this way. There were so many details i missed that i’m glad i got to see here!

I bought a print of it in a head shop over 40 years ago just because it's cool. Still have it.

It sounds dorky, but the first time walked into the American Section of the DIA and saw Cotopaxi, my breath was taken away.

I was immediately drawn to that red and orange earth and sky - what a vision.

Wonderful painting. I have seen this reproduced, very badly saturated red, in the book Ninteeth Century Art A Critical History. So much incredible detail .

I think sublime is the correct word.

Not to put a dampener on it, but reading left to right you go from the calm clear blue skies to the apocalypse: "all my hope is gone".

Although Apocalyptic, i find John Martin a bit melodramatic .. this is much more subtly sublime .. weirdly, it reminds me of 'The Fighting Temeraire' .. Great Post Guys :]

Wait, this is very weird, this is released and Mt. Etna erupts?!?
