ughhh, so what are they?? I know how they formed, by why are they 'portals'? They can't transfer mass instantaneously and therefore faster than the speed of light, because people would be jumping out of their seats if such things were possible. I don't understand DDDD:

Yes or no question obviously needs to be made here. Do the particles travel through space faster than light in a vacuum? Do the electro-magnetic lines warp space and conserve the speed of light?

Oh according to the article, X-points or electron diffusion regions places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun’s atmosphere They found five simple combinations of magnetic field and energetic particle measurements that tell when they come across a X-point. A single spacecraft, properly instrumented, can make these measurements.

The video did not describe the 'signposts', but I presume he meant that the archive data allowed them to build field interaction models which allow them to better predict where the current constellation will find the targets.

Yes, and one Sunday morning I was laying out my trampoline as a child and looking up at the sky when a friend of mine and I noticed something in the sky moving very quickly. It suddenly left our sight as far left as it could go, and within a matter of a couple minutes it was back in the sky on the right traveling to the left sky again. This repeated maybe 10 times before it disappeared. Satellite? Didn't think they orbited our planet that quickly.

I love the picture of the magnetic field lines @ 2:15...it's so amazing to visualize the invisible. It gives way to all sorts of symbolic imagery; the child in utero; the 7 chakras of the human body (and perhaps all lifeforms?); a tree-like organism whose crown and roots spread wide to support life...indeed, if it were not for Earth's core and subsequent magnetic field, life may not exist here on Earth at all. Truly Awesome!

The "criss-cross" or "X-point" shown in this video at T3:00 is a two-dimensional depiction of a bi-directional, cylindrical current sheet in plasma undergoing a Bennett pinch. It is the breakdown of that double-layer in the plasma that explosively releases the stored energy in the 'circuit', and not anything that was formerly conjoined suddenly "reconnecting".

Your posting is the only one of all of the comments that actually seems like you are explaining the video correctly. I usually understand the NASA videos, but this portal one perplexed me. So, using your explanation, if the purpose of this study sources back to mitigating near disaster from space weather,i.e. if these portals are like insta-steroids for plasma, then I 'get it'. Thanks for your explanation. Hope you are right --- it helps to remind me just how important NASA is.

What this video does its best to obscure is that these "portals" are only "shortcuts" if you're a teensy, electrically charged particle constrained to spiral around magnetic field lines. If you're lucky enough to be in a space ship, then the magnetic fields don't constrain your motion and the "portals" are irrelevant to you.

cont: If you ask for sources for an seemingly poor written and unbelievable essay or article, it's up to the writer to give you them. It's not up to you to find them. Especially not when chances are that there ARE no sources at all, but just something that's made up. I hope you follow. Burden of proof is on the one making extraordinary statments, always! And this is a fact in science.

Cave Johnson here. Instead of moon rocks, we may kinda jump in on your mission and see if we can figure this damn thing out. We may need to sue nature to come up with Portals before we did, but that's fine. Anyway - we'll get to the bottom of this and improve our existing technology. How about you folks portaling your shuttle into orbit, instead of launching? That sound good? Thought so. NASA, let's have a meeting tomorrow. Thanks, Cave.

And if that turns out to be correct - then surely this could lead to 'start-star' small craft travel - where the craft is able to increase the probability of the fields connecting by having it's own polarized magnetic field in sync with the ones of the 2 stars it is trying to join?

Well, that's why I was confused. I thought they were going to come right out and say something like 'portals for time travel' when I saw the word 'portal' being used. But, it seems to be more of a magnifying glass effect for the plasma. I am not sure, though.

Is there any possibility that Stars are able to experience the same magnetic portal between them - possibly leading to a theory of how a galaxy is 'clumped' together? Perhaps ridding the need for the elusive dark matter? However unlikely the occasion would be - surely if there is nothing in the way, their fields must eventually cross?

From Transcript of this video : "Observations by NASA's THEMIS spacecraft and Europe's Cluster probes suggest that these magnetic portals open and close dozens of times each day. They're typically located a few tens of thousands of kilometers from Earth where the geomagnetic field meets the onrushing solar wind. Most portals are small and short-lived; others are yawning, vast, and sustained. Tons of energetic particles can flow through the openings, HEATING Earth's upper atmosphere, sparking geomagnetic storms, and igniting bright polar auroras."

How and why are Earth's climate and the environment changing? How and why does the Sun vary and affect Earth and the rest of the solar system? How do planets and life originate? How does the universe work, and what are its origin and destiny? Are we alone? 1: either another portal is opening, a big one. And, we need to change with the poles.

The god particle? It's called Higgs Boson, and is in no way justifying a creator. It might learn us about how big bang happened for example, and that's why it's researched. "The model predicts that there are certain elementary particles even smaller than protons and neutrons. As of the date of this writing, the only particle predicted by the model which has not been experimentally verified is the “Higgs boson,” jokingly referred to as the “God particle.”

Please give me your definition of the word 'portal'. I can imagine in that context it only says that there is a certain path from sun to earth charged paticles can take at almost the speed of light. My pesonal notion of a portal would be a bit different. What i'd really like to know is how long it takes a particle form sun to reach the earth though on of those portals.

These things were called cusps for decades which is a more accurate and less emotive term. This is just some researchers trying to grab the headlines by renaming cusps which does not sound so exciting as portals. Why NASA goes along with this sort of stunt is beyond me, it debases what they do.

Look, I'm not smart, and I may be an "average Jill", but I love learning. No, it doesn't make me feel smar to watch and read about this, but these things always amaze me. And thanks to NASA "dumbing it down" I am able to learn things I would normally not be able to learn. Maybe one day I will be able to understand the more complicated things, but for right now, this is what keeps me interested. Other wise I would just be a confused mess.

Sorry for spamming you. Myself I studied social sciences at the Gymnasium, and will probably study law soon, so I'm pretty crap at science. Religion, philosphy, psychology, history and stuff like that is my thing. But I know that using deduction and rationalism it's easy to disqualify claims on a creator. If a creator exists, then it's likely just an energy we have not discovered yet, just like electricity was once (magic). But any point of view should be respected imo.

I can agree with that... hopeing ISON will be big enough to see more than just the cloud or the actual bright combustion point of the surface releasing gases in reaction to UV rays... though ISON may not be in the proper position in the sky for us to see in the U.S., though I am hopeful... considering how bright it shines at the distance it was first seen, I hope is an indication of it's visibility... though not TOO big I hope... don't need it dragging asteroids from the belt with it, lol
