Thank you so much! Did this for a school science project. Had to use ferrite magnets instead of magnetic tape because the magnetic tape would stick to itself. I'll update on how the project went. Thanks!

Thanks for letting us know! For future reference, if the magnetic tape is attracting instead of repelling, you can re-magnetize it by following the instructions in the project's FAQ: www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/project-ideas/Phys_p093/physics/maglev-train-weight?from=KZbin#help

I'm thinking of adding a small scrap fan (maybe from a junked small appliance) to the top. I don't know if the magnets will interfere with the small re-used DC motor I'll be powering the fan with, but I'll find out.
@Science.Buddies
@Science.Buddies 4 жыл бұрын
Magnetic field strength drops off very rapidly with distance, so if the fan is mounted on top of the train the the magnetic strips are on the bottom, it should be OK. Only one way to find out though!

You have to repolarize the tape with a neodymium magnet, use the same side of the magnet and rub it back and fourth on the tape on the train and tracks. Be careful not to drop the magnet where you loose the side otherwise you have to start over. I put a black marker mark on one side of my magnet so if if I drop it I don't have to start over. Or just buy monopolar tape which I haven't seen yet

Does the thickness of the magnet strip matters? i'm planning to do this project for my physics club
@Science.Buddies
@Science.Buddies 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Yohanes - thicker magnetic strips will be heavier, so they will weigh the train down more. However, they might also have a stronger magnetic field, which would push it up more. Whether these two effects cancel each other out would be a great topic for an experiment!

You would need a LOT of neodymium magnets to do this, it's much easier to use the magnetic strips. It's also going to be hard to get neodymium magnets to line up next to each other, they are going to want to snap together.

Instead of a single long magnetic strip,can I use the pieces of bar magnet?
@Science.Buddies
@Science.Buddies 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Zulfa - most bar magnets would not work because they are polarized axially (end-to-end, in the long direction), so they would not repel the train. The magnetic tape used in this project is polarized through its thickness (the short dimension), which allows two parallel strips of the tape to repel each other.

We’re sorry to hear the project isn’t working for you. It definitely is a project that requires some tinkering to get the pieces aligned just right and that can be frustrating - but if you stick with it we know you can get the train balanced and gliding along. If you haven't already, try reading the FAQs: www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/project-ideas/Phys_p093/physics/maglev-train-weight#help?from=KZbin. If you still need more help, try posting your question/problem in our Ask an Expert forum www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/ask-an-expert-intro?from=KZbin. The more details you provide there the more helpful the answers will be.

Hi - you may be interested in our electromagnetic mass driver video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXethKqoiNufhJY. The same concept (electronic timing of electromagnets) can be used to propel a maglev train.

Please see the link in the video description for a materials list on our website. You will have to search online to get the magnetic strips, but make sure they are monopolar.
