Thank you so much, Molly. I remember extracting the DNA from onion, instead of strawberries, in my 12th grade. Now, being a Master's student in Botany, and spending a year of my Masters without doing any practicals due to COVID-19, your video has been so inspiring and fresh.

This was super cool! I love that the DNA - which normally feels like this invisible thing - becomes visible as goop. Thanks for making/sharing this! :)

Great content. I'm 1 year from becoming a chemist and my brother a biotechnologist. We really like your videos!

I did the same with onion making a paste of chopped onions, in a mixer and then using dish wash soap, table salt and some chilled nail paint removal alcohol (the only source of alcohol I had at that time) at home, during my summer vacation, some six years back. It was beautiful, but onions+dish wash liquid+nail paint removal smelled awful ;)

During our home-based laboratory in one of our major subject, we also make a DIY DNA extraction using banana. Upon watching it, I get a bunch of confidence that we did a great job of successfully extracting the DNA of banana as we end up the same thing like in this one. Too bad that I can't attached the image here but thank youu for sharing it and I'm looking forward for more science vids. 💕

I want to try imaging DNA with an AFM. Is this sample suitable for that purpose?

I am running out of Liquid Nitrogen for the extraction of Leaf DNA. What can I use in substitution
@ScienceIRL
@ScienceIRL 2 жыл бұрын
You can dry your leaf tissue in silica gel instead of snap freezing in liquid N! The DNA will still be very well preserved in dried tissue. Grinding the tissue is a little different, though, you might need a bead beater or to grind it with sand (instead of just a mortar & pestle in liquid N)

Exactly how many hours should we put the isopropyl alcohol in the freezer for?
@ScienceIRL
@ScienceIRL 4 жыл бұрын
No need to be super precise with this, you just want it nice and cold so an hour or two should do the trick! (It'll also depend on the volume - you don't need the whole bottle of rubbing alcohol so I'd portion out a smaller amount which will get cold faster). You can also put it in the freezer the night before you do the experiment so you can just forget about it til you're ready :)

Wonderful video of science at home! Do you think that to do more visualization it was enough to title the video 'how to make a GMO at home'? #livetree #fairweb #simplescience #freeDNA #scienceathome
