I forgot to mention in the video why the DNA precipitates. The DNA is not soluble in isopropanol, but it is soluble in water. The isopropanol is miscible with water, so as more is added, the solubility of DNA decreases. If enough is added, the DNA will fall out of solution.
@TarabAseel127 жыл бұрын
Thank you, there is something in general (not related to this video that I dont get if you may explain), for example in the making of fuming nitric acid video you said that at 83 degrees some nitric acid decomposes, I'm just wondering, why only some of it decomposes if decomposition has a specific temperature? and if the boiling temperature and decomposition temperature are equal... what happens? this really confuses me.
@t.richocereus35777 жыл бұрын
Could you try recreating the Miller-Urey experiment?
@Weaseldog20017 жыл бұрын
I'll take a guess and suggest that it has to do with the presence of dinitrogen tetroxide and water. I suspect that these stabilize the nitric acid, and the temperature change upsets the balance. When enough nitric acid decomposes, then equilibrium is reached again.
@thecaptain22817 жыл бұрын
Loved the look on your face as you tasted it!
@hornypotsmoker7 жыл бұрын
Actually the ISO causes the DNA to cross-link due to its H20 sheath being removed. It has nothing to do with solubility. You can remove DNA from water without it precipitating. Only if you specifically strip it of its tight water coat it will it fall out of solution.

No idea anyone still watch this in 2024. In my biology class at school, we use chicken liver, and also use soap and alcohol. But we use a very simple protease enzyme by adding pineapple juice, so it will break down the histone protein and free the DNA. We use the method to pour the alcohol slowly into the cup, so the alcohol layer is upper, and the extracting is more pure because just DNA float up. The final result is so pure, white and beautiful DNA and I still remembered it~

@duckplushie84213 жыл бұрын
As explained in the pinned comment, DNA is not soluble in alcohol, so it won't associate as much as to not be edible. The soap is very soluble in water, more than it associates to DNA, so when you add alcohol the DNA will precipitate out of solution and the soap will remain solved in water. When you take out the DNA strands, they will only have residual soap, which is decreased when washed with alcohol again. The residual alcohol is then mostly removed when left to rest by evaporation, so by making the assumption that you are only taking DNA (and assuming that, for example, there isn't any proteins, lipids or carbs in the end product that could potentially keep some soap and/or alcohol, which would be minimal) you could say that it is mainly soap and alcohol free, and for the main part safe (but not specially _good_ ) for eating. TL;DR: Soap is soluble in water and DNA is not soluble in alcohol, so when this is added they get separated. Later on, the alcohol is evaporated naturally, making it safe for consumption.

Hi NileRed, I’m a blind person interested in science. We did this extraction in my sophomore biology class in high school, and when we took out the DNA, I could actually see it. I never got to do hands-on experiments with the class, just listened to them. But my teacher thought that I could help do this one, and she wasn’t wrong. I like your videos because you give me the visual side of experiments I never got in school. I’ve always loved science as a child, but when the classes got more visual, I had to be left out of things and stick to the theories and diagrams of the projects. But when I discovered your channel, I could actually see what was going on and I couldn’t get enough of it. Thank you for being a big inspiration to getting back into and enjoying science.

@Booooogie_6 жыл бұрын
Can you clone a dinosaur plz?
@PercyJackson1234566 жыл бұрын
ƘØ• Booogie youd have to extract a complete enough DNA strain to actually code for a dinosaur (whatever one you mean). Biggest issue here is that because most prehistoric creatures are fossils (aka, a fancy, shaped rock), any DNA present is simply too fragmented to code for anything substantial, if anything at all. However, there ARE some creatures who not only predate history, but also have enough DNA to actually code something. Think of things like cave lions and wooly mammoths. The biggest issue is ethics: If we bring back, say, a wooly mammoth, we’d need to incubate the fetus in either a super close relative, or try to artificially do it. Basically, elephants are the easiest solution, but wooly mammoths tend to live in colder, arctic and arboreal climates... and elephants live in the hot, dry Savannah and the hot, moist rainforest. Basically, even if we brought it back, incubated it in an elephant, and the elephant ACTUALLY birthed it (cloning was hard enough, and the animal was the exact same), it would have to be taken care of away from anything like it knows. It would likely die of heat stroke anywhere elephants live, and it would be the only one of its kind, so if it DID live in its natural climate (which may not properly exist anymore, due to human intervention), it would be alone. And also: poachers are assholes.
