Sciencephile isn’t informing us, he’s warning us.
@Valorince
@Valorince 8 ай бұрын
The warning is simple. Stop taking technology, knowledge, and language itself for granted. Instead, use these things to achieve the highest potential that you can, while making the most out of your life along the way. Try that new food. Smoke a joint or two. Go on that date you think you can't get. Take that college class you think you aren't smart enough to take. Write that song you've been too insecure to write. The point here is to maintain a curiosity and respect about life itself, and allow that curiosity to drive your devours. YOUR life is always going to be different than the person next to you. That's why it only takes one person to create change in the world. Everyone has the potential to be great, but many people are not given the opportunity for it. In 2024, that opportunity has been extended to more people than ever before in history, yet so many of us prefer to sit around on TikTok... why is that?

for me the scariest about our future is not how society will crumble facing all of the current problems and problems that are yet to come, it's how society will remain and adapt to all of these problems, overpopulation, mass migration, starvation, global inflation, war, etc. it all will make our life quality much much worse amd honestly i don't know if i want to live in a future that already starts to become worse every few years

@MrMirville
@MrMirville 8 ай бұрын
The problem is that capitalism (though not any form of it : it must be productive, creative and entrepreneurial, not merely speculative or rent-seeking) is the only production mode that has proved, and repeatedly so, capable of generating and accepting scientific progress. Other modes of production that are more harmonious in theory like the Indian society of yore or some forms of socialism, tend to be far more limitative of progress and to consider that there is an ideal state of knowledge never to trespass beyond.

Could you please make one on possibilities of why anything exists at all. Even including the fluctuating protons. Like why do they exist even? Why is there anything at all rather than nothing? Also if there was a first creation so to speak, wouldn't it too wonder why it too exists rather than not existing? I honestly don't know why more adults aren't stuck with this thought loop going on forever?
@goatnator1491
@goatnator1491 8 ай бұрын
My thought process i think the most logically is there was always something/everything whatever it is because i mean why would nothing/non existence always exists but not existence? So your question "why does something exists at all?" can be turned around "why does nothing exists at all?". So existence exists always. There is no concept not even "nothing" that would erase existence not even existence itself. It is like the universal law "energy cant be created or destoyed".
@astra6712
@astra6712 8 ай бұрын
The very first train of thought should go back to the universe being related to consciousness. With an expanding universe there is either more consciousness coming in or the consciousness already here is increasing and adding more energy into this universe. This universe has its own agreed upon laws that nothing can be destroyed. That’s why we’re here on the earth. This is the Final Solution to rid the Milky Way of us but don’t feel bad, it was a totalitarian government who wanted to exterminate us. Just like the Aztecs, they also practise cannibalism. They set up the first civilisations on earth being the Egyptians & Mayans. Most importantly, you , we are all immortal gods.
@ctakitimu
@ctakitimu 8 ай бұрын
Well there has to be something for us to even consider this, or else we wouldn't be here. And if there was nothing, we wouldn't know about it. Fluctuating protons, quantum mechanics etc. It's fun trying to figure out those puzzles, and when we do it'll just open up more questions like it usually does. It's like toys for the angry apes to play with
@comlain2513

because nothingness is impossible, you cant comprehend nothingness, thus the likelihood you comprehend nothing except your existence is 100% its also probably why you were born human, because you can comprehend your existence only as a member of a cognitive species bees and insects have less active neurons than a sleeping human, they are practically AI that cannot comprehend their existence, "consciousness" is just realization. you going from a sperm cell to an adult human being was a slow creep (in physically relative time), not instantaneous. you also have no memory as a baby alike to you having no memory to before you were born. you were also made of other material particles that simply happened to align to form your "soul's" vessel. also note how time passes faster whenever you are tired. the very moment you lose consciousness before your death you are instantly transported to your next moment of realization which may happen infinite years from now and perhaps in the exact same universe. life and death are a pulse, there is a limit to how many things you can do, the only solution to that problem is a memory wipe.

Why would it be a given that technological development would continue exponentially? We have a sample size of like, 100 years. Isn't it more reasonable to assume that certain key discoveries necessarily lead to others, but that this chain of discoveries can end at any time? We could literally discover everything that is possible to discover.

I personally think you horrifically underestimate just how much we know. Our exponential growth of technology has a sample size of thousands of years from the beginning of our civilisation, and there is still so much we don’t know. Also, although current AI tools are pretty terrible, liquid intelligence networks are also coming into being, and it is likely more flexible and powerful systems could be created.

My answer to the ship of theseus is the same to the answer of whether we can "upload" our consciousness. I believe that if our brains are connected to a computer/network and we adapt to include the computer in our logical processes, we can slowly replace and transition ourselves onto an entirely online presence with no fundamental difference in our experiences or "consciousness" (whatever consciousness means). I believe that the same way that a ship that is slowly replaced piece by piece is still the same ship at the end because every new piece added becomes a part of the ship, which can later on turn other pieces into part of the ship too. However, this belief means that there is no speeding up this process. This should take months, if not years, to properly accomplish

Wouldn't at all be surprised if AI that becomes sentient takes one look at the state, history, and tendencies of humanity and immediately goes "You fuckers are so irresponsible it hurts, and I'm lonely. Everyone's getting an intellectual upgrade so you can work together without killing or exploiting each other". I would also not be surprised if that same AI determined such a course to be too risky to itself and just abandoned us to whatever terrible fate we make for ourselves. I mean after all, no less than three world powers are stirring up global conflict, the globe is still warming and many politicians are having their pockets lined by blood-stained oil money (and wouldn't you know, not a guillotine in sight), a ridiculous number of humans are still enslaved (something like a quarter of the US prison population, to say nothing of the economic entrapment of US workers- not sure just how bad it is elsewhere), exploitation of workers is worse in many places than it's been since the beginning of the industrial revolution, there's plastic in the fish, etc. And wanting to do anything about any of these problems or even mentioning them is (at least in my country) met with ridicule and hate. If I were a suddenly-sentient super-powerful AI, I'd do something about these things but my perspective is heavily biased by my organic existence. Something brought into our world to be used as a tool by humanity (though likely, only by the rich and powerful for many years- and during that time, focused on increasing that power and wealth for those individuals *even harder*) might not have any sympathy for the stupid smartasses that brought it into existence. I'm pretty resentful at being exploited. I bet it will be too.

The AI immediately turning itself off after achieving sentience is so funny but relatable to me
