Experiment: To test a leaf for starch
1. Take a beaker and half fill it with water.
2. Pluck a leaf from a plant which has been exposed to sunlight and boil it in water for about five minutes to soften it.
3. Then take the leaf out and place it in petri dish.
4. Now put the leaf into a test tube and pour alcohol to cover the leaf.
5. Place the test tube with leaf filled with alcohol into the beaker of boiling water.
A water bath is used to prevent accidents that may arise from alcohol being inflammable.
Put off the flame when the alcohol boils.
6. You will observe that the leaf has become almost colourless.
7. Wash the decolourised leaf with warm water to clean it and soften it.
8. Put the leaf on a white paper and pour iodine solution over the leaf and observe any change in colour.
9. You will observe that the leaf turns blue-black which concludes the presence of starch.
(The Iodine test is used to test the presence of starch. Iodine reacts with the starch, producing a blue-black colour.)
This shows that starch is present in the green leaf.

Why was the leaf placed in ethanol thought? And if the iodine was directly poured over a normal leaf that has not been boiled or anything as such does it still turns blue black?

Yes.... But we cannot able to see it as because leaf 🍃is now green in colour..... So blue- black colour will not be visibled😊

Yk that a green pigment called ''chlorophyll is present in leaves which gives it the green color. Now if it is already containing green color then the effect of iodine color wouldn't be shown. Means it would contains starch but we cannot prove it because the green color is gonna overlap or like kinda hide the blue black color due to which it won't be visible

Plant produces its energy in the presence of chlorophyll in leaves. During photosynthesis a plant absorbs light energy using the pigment chlorophyll. This allows it to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose. This glucose is transformed into starch, cellulose, proteins and oils.
