I used to sleep only four hours, but it was because i was working two jobs. During my lunch breaks I would take power naps and my days off (which was only one or two) I'd spend all day regaining my energy by sleeping. Let me tell you, it felt horrible. Eventually I quit one job and am more happier for it. Also, I was between 18-23 and slim. Prime age with lots of energy and even then I felt crappy sleeping so little

Evolution is slow, it takes tens of thousands of years for a species to evolve, humans have just advanced so far in non biological ways quickly and we live such short lives, that evolution feels like its moving at a glacial pace. Human civilization is such a tiny sliver of time compared to the earth’s entire lifetime. Plus, it’s not like humans have as many selective pressures anymore, we don’t need to evolve useful survival traits because a lot less of humanity is struggling to survive and we have technology to do a lot of stuff for us. Mutations are rare and barely any of them are helpful, selective pressures are what give them a chance to spread through a population. “Sleeping on command” has never been something especially necessary for survival so it makes sense that we’ve never evolved to do it.

Im pretty sure that people, when they get into a routine feel a lot less tired. The chances that everyone that commented on your post, including you, have this genetic modification seems extremely low. If you wake up in a rem cycle it can make your sleep quality feel extremely bad so I would recommend that you try sleeping for 7 1/2 hours per night for a week if you can. Long term effects of sleep deprivation can be pretty serious so before you self diagnose, you should probably see a protectional. Not a specialist in any of this so don't quote me.

Finally! I am living for this video! I am a naturally short sleeper. I usually sleep two hours, wake up to pee, sleep another two, and then get up for the day. I have waited my whole life for this kind of research to happen. I have most of those other traits they mentioned too, specifically the higher pain threshold and better memory.

I have all the traits described, ie. memory, multitasking, optimistic, intuitive, energetic (I run 9 miles a day) I’m in perfect physical health. I have been so relieved since I learned that my short sleeping is genetically based. Became aware of sleeping less in adolescence. I've always slept shorter than anyone I know. I believe that my dad was a 6 hour a night guy. Also, my mom was very sleep disordered and it runs in her side of the family for the females especially to be sleep disordered in terms of weird sleep habits. I've gone through most of my adult life with between 3 to 5 hours sleep per night. Hard for me to sleep past 3 hours unless I'm really exhausted. But I do try and get 5 hours, because I have been worried that less was going to kill me. Now I know, if I sleep four and a half hours or whatever then just go with the flow. I have an incredible memory which both my parents had, but my dad had a photographic memory, which I inherited. I'm a natural optimist, which pulls me out of the myriad reasons I have for depression and anxiety. I'm known for my excellent memory among my friends. Have exceptional autobiographical memory. Life has been rough so at least I got some kind of genetic lottery! Now I can really appreciate it. Now I know it's not going to kill me and that I'm not a complete freak! It is truly such a relief to know that I'm a natural short sleeper and that it's a thing! Hats off to the researchers who have found the genetic mutation which causes this unusual pattern! And hallelujah that I'm one of the lucky ones in this regard!

I sleep for 5:30 hours each night and it’s perfect for me, sometimes however I end up sleeping for 10-11 hours and it still feels fine. I'm a natural short sleep. I wake up automatically after 4 hours and feel refreshed and ready to go. So it doesn't matter what time I go to bed. Sometimes, I may sleep a lil longer but not often and if I sleep more than 6 hours, I feel drained, tired, and yucky. I've been this way all my life.
