Being a scientist is one thing but being able to communicate science (in my opinion) is much more impressive and important! Your ability to translate verbiage at the professional research level and explain it to thousands of people who have little to no background knowledge in this area is super awesome!

I’ve never subscribed to a channel so fast. I’m currently an undergrad but planning to get my PhD. I recently did a brief study on the effects of ASMR meditations for my research methods class and the article you’re reading is actually one I used for my background info section so this is crazy to me

@Kenzlnwhite
@Kenzlnwhite Ай бұрын
I “noticed” ASMR when I was in 2nd grade. Obviously 21 years ago, we knew nothing about it. But I would always watch my teachers mouth while they read to us, and even a Peer’s when she read to herself. What’s funny is that I HATE mouth sounds when they’re at full volume and not in an ASMR context, which I also find intriguing. I hope somebody finds out the reason for that.
@DrGabrieleDoesASMR
@DrGabrieleDoesASMR Ай бұрын
So interesting! Aversion to sounds is called misophonia. It’s not unusual to experience both ASMR and misophonia 🙂
@carleigh.charlton
@carleigh.charlton Ай бұрын
I wonder if it’s related to some kind of hyper sensitivity, because some are so sensitive to these sounds, they may be more likely to enjoy it in an asmr context, but overwhelmed but it at a “full volume” ? just a guess
@Kenzlnwhite
@Kenzlnwhite Ай бұрын
@GabrieleDoesASMRI definitely experience misophonia, to the point where it affects my daily life and my relationships with certain people because of the way they speak. I wish I didn’t. It’s such a curse
@Kenzlnwhite
@Kenzlnwhite Ай бұрын
@@carleigh.charltonmaybe, its such a hard thing to pinpoint the exact reason why. I’ve never been officially evaluated but I do believe I fall somewhere on the spectrum, as it is very prevalent in my family. I can’t tolerate loud noises of any kind.
@Kenzlnwhite
@Kenzlnwhite 3 күн бұрын
@ I’m not sure. You’re probably right. But like I cannot STAND the sound of my husband whispering because of how wet his mouth sounds. Triggers my misophonia. But someone else doing asmr? Literally nothing.

This is interesting to me because I have wondered if overconsumption of ASMR can cause anxiety when not listening to it.... Especially in those with certain brain or neurological disorders... Since the heart rate slows down then that means the vagus nerve and the parasympathetic system are being affected... I have Chiari malformation which can affect you physically and mentally... And I have wondered if listening to ASMR a whole lot has made certain things worse... Kind of like the way addiction / dependency does when youre in withdrawaI.I have different reasons for this inquiry but typing that would make my comment a whole paper in itself😂 Good video. First time listener. I just subbed

8:30 so does that mean tingles are like the antithesis of sweat? 😮
@DrGabrieleDoesASMR
@DrGabrieleDoesASMR 22 күн бұрын
Not quite, but that’s a creative way to think about it! ASMR causing a skin conductance increase doesn’t necessarily mean less sweating, it’s more about how your body reacts to stimuli. Skin conductance reflects the activity of your sweat glands, which are controlled by your nervous system. Even though ASMR relaxes you (as shown by a decrease in heart rate), the tingling sensations might temporarily increase skin conductance due to mild arousal or excitement. So, ASMR is more like a unique mix of relaxation and engagement, rather than the opposite of sweat!

@DrGabrieleDoesASMR 26 күн бұрын
The ASMR “tingle” is often described as a goosebump/static feeling, usually on the scalp, neck, and shoulders, in response to triggering stimuli 🙂 it’s not so easy to define, but there are notable differences between ASMR “tingles” and chills from music. The definition is yet to be clarified actually, that’s how early the research is!
