The dark sided of academia is exposed by Sabine Hossenfelder in her video: My dream died, and now I'm here. I think this is a much watch video for everyone who is interested in having a career in scientific research.

Academic institutions are really unprofessional.

If the question is for me : I have had a lot of chances .I have take full professional profits on some , others not so good . But I have followed successfully my scientific projects ALONE and have published my papers in good journals without collaborators and out of the main streams of Physics in mostly of my papers . I was full professor at the age of 29 in Brazil and now I am retired at 64 .My list of publications .scholar.google.com/citations?view_op=list_works&hl=pt-BR&user=8_GsKRsAAAAJ&fbclid=IwAR2qnyU9-ZJkbIosZjdml9TdEeB-CwP93LE0PzLvCIjkzifP7Zz-yRQ8ijQ_aem_AVuCBWreFbIv6X2SEtw-zGhZznm0e6ppr0oF3bmi2ln8bKj1GjBafezRuAtAZ1_HTsHQ8bC8pbUE2OBPj9n5xJu_

@@josephvanname3377 I have been a FULL professor either ! . Of course that Academic Institutions have a lot of problems as any other Institutions . But believe me : Perhaps Bad with them . Certainly much worse without them!.

Great discussion Jon, I agree with everything you and Sabine said. I think is important for new students to recognize this side of academia before committing to a masters or a PhD. My views have also changed throughout my PhD, and now I think of academia more as a business where scientific production and getting grants is the main objective. I try to work towards that while also remaining ethical and trying to establish good collaborations.

Also, well summarized by you: have your expectations in the right place, so you don’t get traumatized when you enter the system. Hard truths, to be honest, but truths nonetheless.

Exactly. I think very science people should watch the video of Sabine so they are well informed before joining academia.

In principle I agree with Sabine, only what would be the alternative? There are many things wrong with academia, but we must always remember that in the end it is the only entity capable of doing research independently (this is not always true of research done by private companies). So young researchers must change the system from within, not destroy it, because the alternative is much worse than academia.

Maybe if Einstein followed a direct academic path, we wouldn't now know his name? I mean, a senior professor may have taken credit?

Jim Al-Kalili I'm very famous and very good science educator who's a professor of physics at the University of Surrey. He said his most cited article was 200 and I started science late in my life and one of my articles has only a hundred and I thought that that was bad but I guess it's not so bad....

BE FAIR! Don't erase this comment. We can coexist. You apparently came up with same idea of putting the BS sequence in the beginning and leaving the rest in chronological order two days after me on your own. Fine with me. We cater to different audiences anyway. Me: Physicist at Sabine's level pointing out contradictions in an intellectual funny way one week after first watching her video. You: compassionate reaction video with nice personal insights, I admit that.
