Scientists confirm that dogs can recognize an untrustworthy person.
When your dog growls at someone in your home - they may be onto something.
So on our countdown today - we have the top 4 reasons why you should trust your dog before you believe your friends.
#1. Science proves that dogs know when someone is rude to you
It’s fascinating to think that a dog can figure out when someone is rude to you!
According to a study published in the journal of Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews, dogs can tell when someone is being a jerk.
This research was conducted at Kyoto University in Japan around 2015.
In this study, scientists conducted a live experiment with dogs and their owners.
What they found is enlightening.
The live scientific experiment involved two different phases. In both scenarios, the dog owner would pretend to struggle with opening a package that contained a toy.
Then the actors came in.
In the first case, the hired actor aggressively refused to help. In the second scenario, the actor helped open the container
After the performance - the actors were instructed to give treats to the owner’s dog.
The dogs accepted food from the actor who tried to help, however, they refused treats from the actor who didn’t lend a hand.
And that brings us to #2 on our countdown.
#2. Science proves dogs know when someone is deceitful
Believe it or not, dogs don’t respond to unreliable people
Again in Kyoto University in Japan!
But this time with another scientist.
The study was conducted by Akiko Takaoka in 2015.
This research laid the foundation for a groundbreaking experiment as to why dogs trust some people and not others.
And this study wasn’t just a paper.
It was a live experiment where researchers believed a dog would go where you pointed - if you were telling the truth.
Most people know an obedient dog will go where you point if you are honest. But scientists wanted to test this theory.
They conducted their experiment in three parts.
With 24 different dogs.
On the first test, they pointed each dog to go to an overturned container that concealed a treat.
On the second test, they pointed each dog to an empty container - instead of one with food.
Every dog fell for it.
But here’s the problem.
On the third round, they pointed each dog to another concealed treat.
None of the dogs would go for it.
The moral of the story?
If you trick a dog once you may get away with it. But you won’t trick them twice. And on the third strike, you’re out.
John Bradshaw, who is a scientist from the University of Bristol, in the UK, weighs in with his opinion.
He states that dogs like predictability. So you can’t ever mislead them.
Apparently, they know honesty when they see it.
Which brings us to #3 on our countdown.
#3. Science proves dogs can understand hand gestures and body language.
According to animal behavior expert Inga MacKellar, canines will pick up on every move a dog or human makes. Whether it’s stiff behavior, playfulness, or nervous behavior, a dog will know immediately.
This is because dogs rely on canine body language to assess their own safety when they are around other dogs. This inbred behavior transfers directly to human behavior as well.
So if a person you know is saying one thing - but acting differently - your dog will sense it immediately.
That’s why your dog will bark or growl at a person they think they may be an immediate threat. Even if that person is only thinking of harming you in the future.
Dogs can pick up on unintentional and subtle cues - like when someone is nervous or has anger toward you. This person might seem all right to you, but your dog knows better.
#4. Science proves dogs can read facial expressions.
A recent study published in the journal of Learning And Behavior addresses the subject of whether or not dogs can read facial expressions.
Conducted by scientists from a University in Valenzano Italy, this study confirms what you were thinking all along.
Your dog knows what you are thinking from your facial expressions.
But they know what other people are thinking too.
This is a remarkable study. And it was an experiment where scientists showed dogs photos.
They were blown-up photographs of people with different emotions.
These were pictures of faces that expressed fear, sadness, surprise, anger, disgust, and happiness.
But there was one more facial expression. It was a neutral facial expression.
During the experiment, a dog’s heart would actually run faster when they were shown the angry, happy, surprised, disgusted, sad, or fearful photos.
The scientific study showed that when humans exhibit a clearly aroused emotional state, we are doing something alarming.
We are bearing our teeth.
This can indicate to a dog that we are bearing our fangs.
Which of course we are not.
But if you do experience an extreme emotional swing, don’t bear your teeth and hug your dog at the same time.
Dogs will see these both as a threat. It makes them nervous and over-excited.

My dogs keep barking into my windows from outside the house for the past few years already. The only problem is "I Was alone in my ROOM!" 😱😱😱😱😱 Spooky!!! Another thing was that my 2 dogs barked a lot into my house before my father passed away early January 2021 from a heart attack. My father was a healthy man and never did drugs/alcohol and suddenly had a fatal heart attack that led to his death. My 2 dogs are still barking into my window randomly even when I pop my face towards the window to tell them to stop barking. Maybe they see something that ain't from the human realm?

100% true. One of my dogs generally loves people, men especially. A neighbour I always had a bad feeling about tried to approach my dog, I wasn't holding him or very near him. My cousins dog saved her whole family. Their whole house was on fire while everybody was sleeping... and it was only the dog who barked the hell out of her and tried to wake up everyone ... thanks to her an important part of my family is alive Edit: With an important part I mean a part of my family that I actually grew up with. I heard a story once of dog that lived on a farm with a family. They had a machine they would drive, maybe a thresher or something to cut the grain when it got long. They were doing this one day and the dog was going crazy barking at the driver. The driver ignored it. Finally at one point the dog ran in front of the machine and was killed. They looked and found a child lying on the ground a little further from where the dog ran in front of the machine.

My dog rarely makes a sound. He communicates by gesture. Urgency by repetitive gesture. He has multiple tells for some situations depending on the circumstances. Except for barking during ball play most barking is a ruse to go out when not requiring a toilet break, which is ignored. He has great table manners, he sleeps under the table. He will not rush at dropped food. He does not bother food on coffee tables and looks away when humans are eating.

This is true, as I witnessed it on a hike when out with my girlfriend and her dog. We must have passed 10 people on the trail and the dog didn't react once. Ghaz Man: Most definitely, trust your dog. I had a beautiful Boxer, Buster Fred, who was very trustworthy around children, other dogs and even cats. When we moved into a new apartment building, I introduced us to the maintenance man. Buster Fred head-butted him in the crotch, something I had never seen from any dog. Diane McNally Amy dog did the same thing!! My dog kept licking and sniffing my husbands nose for months! Eventually, his eardrum burst from pressure put on his eardrum from a huge tumor on his adenoids! That’s when we realized what she had been doing all that time, she was adamant about it. Me and my friend found a bottle in the woods. I picked it up wanting to smash it on a tree (by throwing of course) when i grabbed the part where the top i got some of the remaing beer on my hands 😥 we where walking back to the house and two of the neighbors boxers where there waiting. I once dropped a glass, cleaned up the glass, went for something to clean up the scotch and by the time I got back my dog had drunk it all. Dogs LOVE alcohol, just try dropping a few drops of beer, see how your dog reacts. I only seen a couple dogs not like it, and usually they were on the medium-smaller side. Never seen a big dog refuse it. If you ask me he probably just saw signs of aggression, it had nothing to do with the guy being drunk unless your dog has had bad experiences with drunk people.

I taught my cattahoula vocal commands with hand gestures first, taught her to read body language, then she easily mastered non-vocalized commands with just hand gestures. Bella is a dog that I rescued from her abuser literally! She walks with me without a leash, she knows the command go find ( fill in the blank ) and she will retrieve whatever I tell her. She will attack on command with a trigger word, she also has a safety word in order to make her stop attacking just like a police dog. When I first got her she was broken mentally, physically, and emotionally. It is amazing what love and trust can do.

A stray dog followed me home. She barked all day long until my dad got home and she didn't bark at him. Also she didn't bark when she met boyfriend. She just laid down and let him pet her and he wasn't really a dog person. So, I always believed she knew they were good people that I trusted so she trusted. Actually my dog learned what smiling is. She bares her teeth when she’s extremely excited and wants petting. And if we say “wheres that pretty smile “ she’ll show her teeth and get excited that we will pet her ! she also shows signs of jealously . Barking when I rub my husbands head. She is hard to trick a second time. and she will get uncomfortable and bark during play fighting. Dogs are smart af and have emotions. Once I was walking my dog, as usual I was was with my friends. These two women came out of their car that just drive down and when they can out I saw my dog growling at the girls which was very unexpected and I was a bit worried because she never growls at people, so I brought her over in another area. I was the only one to see my dog do this but about an hour later an ambulance came down to the house those girls went into. My friends and I were confused but we knew the man that lived there was an alcoholic. The man got taken away and the girls went with him. It turns out the girls found him after he had a heart attack or something similar. I've always trusted my dogs' instincts but I never thought something like that would happen. Sadly the man passed away a few months later. I still have the same dog and I'd trust her with my life

When your dog is on the leash it feels the need to protect you and feels a little more confident because your there to back him(pack mentality) . Fun Fact: Dogs who grow up around households where people laugh a lot, will actually learn to discern between showing fangs and smiling. Usually the difference lies in the detail of the eyes and the corners of the mouth. Thus when a dog learns this difference, in certain cases you will find dogs that actually take over the trait and will display an actual Smile when they are happy or want to show their humans that they are friendly. To people who have no dogs this can actually cause the same reaction as stated in the video vice versa (mistake their smile for showing their fangs.)

I have three dogs but my chocolate lab in particular is extremely perceptive. I have two stories about how perceptive he really is. When my fiance and I were a fairly new couple several years ago, we went to the park a lot and brought Jack to walk with us. Jack is very friendly with pretty much every person he sees/meets. He had never been aggressive toward anyone before this. However, when we were on the trail together (my fiance was using the bathroom at the time) a man was walking our way and Jack lost it. He growled, barked and stood guard in front of me, making it hard for me to continue walking towards the man. It made me wonder if this guy had planned to harm me. He seemed ordinary enough but the vibe I myself got from him and the way my dog acted when he saw him made me curious what his intentions were. When we passed him, Jack kept checking behind us until we were off the trail and in the park where lots of people were. This story is much more impressive. About three years after that happened, while I was sleeping very early in the morning, Jack whined and barked excessively. My brain was foggy and I was immensely tired so I just turned over and tried to cover my head up with a pillow. Jack came to my side of the bed, booped my face with his paw and ran back around to the other side of the bed, all while whining. This finally woke me up enough that it made me look over to that side of the bed to see what was going on. That's when I saw my fiance having a seizure and choking on his own blood. I could see and hear him gurgling. I'm not sure how I didn't notice sooner! I immediately turned him on his side to get the blood out and called 911. If not for my dog, my fiance might not be here with me today! That seizure lasted nearly four minutes just in the time I was awake. Who knows how long he had been seizing before Jack woke me up? I'm so thankful I was awakened by my dog!

My dog really only barks when she is taken by surprise, with only two exceptions: 1) the guy who lives next door. She barks at him every single time she sees him, and last time she and I were outside at the same time as him, she barked so fiercely that I think he and I were both concerned. She was acting so protective, even though I in no way felt threatened. 2) we had some home maintenance done recently. We’ve had maintenance done in the past, and my dog didn’t bark, but this time it was a new guy, and something about him she did not like. She barked like mad the whole time he was inside the house. I had to keep her in my bedroom because I felt sorry for him. After he left, I let her out and she ran through every room in the house to make sure he was gone. Neither of these men gave off any alarms or red flags that I observed, but my dog hates them, so I am cautious around them and I definitely don’t trust them.

This isn't at all persuasive. Many untrustworthy people genuinely like dogs, and their body language is congruent with that. But dogs are very observant about body language and may pick up cues that escape the notice of their human, so they may sometimes react correctly to shifty human body language. And they could pick up olfactory cues we miss, like a meth user, etc. whose behavior could be suspect. But some people don't like dogs, or haven't been around any and a dog can react to this person's body language timidity, fear, or discomfort with unwarranted suspicion. Dogs can give people important cues, but it is up to the alert human to interpret the cues. Just because your dog likes a charming, dog loving, self confident psychopath is no reason to trust that person. I was once out with a very friendly Springer Spaniel in an isolated area walking on a jeep trail. A runner approached and she went ballistic. I will always wonder about that because she was such a friendly dog, and never again did this, but in hindsight I think it was probably just because he was running and got way too close. She was not having any of that!

Well said. Another thing to look at is people who have anxiety, social anxiety, or some level of depression. I've been lunged at by dogs in the past, and I had no ill-intentions towards anyone. Now that I look back at it, I was going through lots of anxiety among other things. Also, people with social anxiety may give off awkward body language that could indicate fear. I've noticed that dogs can pick up on overall anxiety, and may even become hostile because of it. This only increases the anxiety within the sufferer, which can in turn increase the dog's anxiety.

If a dog seems aggressive, it's best to stay very still and speak reassuringly, and back away. Keep hands still and high against your body, not down by dog mouth. Don't touch dogs you don't know, and even then, only when they indicate a desire for attention. Most dogs enjoy a gentle scritch on chest or around ruff on sides, but don't enjoy a hand reaching overhead, such as patting or contact on top of head. For whatever reason, dogs seem to enjoy baby talk and nonsense words.

It’s pretty true. I was crying since my grandpa and grandma didn’t wanna come over for thanksgiving which also made my mother and sister angry. My dog stayed by my side while I cried and I needed her there since my family ain’t good at comforting me. (Most of them SUCK at being comforting when it’s needed) Next day, my grandparents come over only because they realize they got caught in their lies so now they had to come. .-. My dog is normally a shy and anxious dog who keeps to herself: AROUND THEM SHE HATED THEM. SHE TRIED TO BITE MY GRANDMA LOL. SHE GROWLED AT MY GRANDPA.
