I think humans built these places in order to be safely hidden & totally inaccessible to the giants who fed on human beings and used up all of their resources, taking any community's crops, domestic animals and herds of cattle, sheep, pigs and water. Early humans lived in secret places where the giants could never gain entry & would never fit through the access tunnels etc. Humans could effectively hide and live relatively peacefully. Certain of their security & hidden sanctuary being completely inaccessible to all the gigantic & ravenous meat eating predators & huge vicious monsters and dinosaurs and all the huge beasts that walked the earth over 4000 years ago! .
