the idea that ancient cultures hadn't figured out that round things roll is too laughable. I always dismiss folks who espouse this idea as fools or liars.

Knowing that round things roll is just the first part. Next you need to figure out what to do with that knowledge. I see it being used as a weapon first. Rolling heavy stones at attackers. Only works if you have the high ground. Also, and I'm not sure I agree, inventing the axle was necessary to make using the wheel for travel useful. Also, if you're thinking of moving the stones on a cart, you've already pointed out that wood would be crushed. You'd need wheels made of stone.

"...rolling over logs"? Are you serious? Granite blocks the size a school buses would crush the logs to splinters. How about they moved the stones by sound waves? Chanting which was common for generations might create sound waves.
