😂 That was me Cece with the photos but I’ve had sooo many last names! I met Dan’el in 1974 at the Portland org. I doubt Janice would have known Mark Benedict. He joined with me AOLA Nov 1977 but by January he was gone back to Portland. I took the SO contract seriously so stayed.

A divorce court judge said to the husband, “I have reviewed this case very carefully, and I’ve decided to give your wife $800 a week.” “That’s very fair, your honor,” he replied. “And every now and then, I’ll try to send her a few bucks myself.”

That's right; I had very fun wins and still benefitting from them. There are CERTAINLY many things far from the ideal in the organization and in the "culture" of Scientology and that is what most complain about. The culture of Scientology can actually be pretty mean. If Scientology had something of a Christian culture, where adherents sincerely believed that they had responsibilities toward less capable people, and they were encouraged to help people through hard times as part of their community, their current status in society would be far better. Nevertheless, there are excellent tools in their toolbox that can remedy or better so many aspects of life. I'm happy that I learned it well enough to give and receive benefit.

Thanks very much Peggy. I don't know how to explain it. I have clear memories of those times and people. Sometimes, I just need someone to mention a name or place that I haven't thought about in years and the memories come flooding back. That is one of the things I love about doing these interviews. I thought I recognized Dan Locke's name and face, but when we started talking I recalled that we were int he RPF together in 1982/83 and the memories came back.

Really great to hear Dan and his story. Excellent show. 44:30 re Waldo, he and Dan Koon, got some TR coaching for the TR movie, and the cassette recording of LRH coaching Dan Koon (not Dan Locke here) and Waldo is on the "Int Hard TRs Course" and even though I think Hubbard's a horrible person today, he had his charming helpful genuine, seemingly, moments, and his coaching and chuckling to Dan and Waldo I wish were made available to see him at such moments. Also, in that time slot of the TR movie where Waldo was the twin of Dan Koon in the Hubbard training TR movie, Hubbard added the TR-2 definition of "appropriate acknowledgement" to TR-2, allowing more than just the limited choices of "acks" (acknowledgements), because what the Hubbard communication formula had to have was appropriateness to the acknowledgement one gives. Dan Locke here, truly was a highlight Sea Org member, unbelievably chipper and helpful through thick and thin, he gave endless assistance to people. If anyone was a natural staff member, he's got it. But that's natural to him, I think, Dan is really a really good human being, period. (When I was on the Routing Forms pilot project, of which Dan L might not know, but Roy Selby I think was the second iteration of the Routing Forms Project In Charge, Roy and Ben Atwood and Jessica Pruit were the second gen Routing Forms Pjt---Roy and Barbara Price were the first gen Routing Forms Pjt, and me, I came along as the 3rd or 4th gen of the Routing Forms Pjt after the first gens had all done all the hard work and I just cleaned their work up, but that project was utterly fruitless, it was paperpushing to make SCientology "work" which fails due to the "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear" fundamental problem with the Hubbard "tech."). Dan Locke helped me endlessly on the piloting of the final routing forms. Dan L would forever helpfully let me pilot the segments of the routing forms in his zone in ASHO when I needed to pilot steps. Dan was one of the smartest staffers and diehards through the leanest years of ASHOs existence! The diehard years of ASHO!

His sarcasm and joking are not so evident in his writing as in his talking. And he joked a lot in those early recordings I think.

This is Dan Locke, the interviewee in this video. In last night's sleep I remembered better some aspects of what was related in this video. I want to clear them up as I think some of what I said here makes me look like some poor soul who was not given any help in somewhat dire circumstances, such as food and sleep. That's not true. I was given plenty of help. I want to be truthful. There's some false memory going on in this interview so I want to bring it up now as I am thinking that some old friends might see this and take offense. I think my altering the details may be due to that these events are about fifty years ago. After leaving Portland in 1979 and going to Los Angeles, I can recall only talking about my Portland experiences to a very few people in any detail at all. Most of the reason I happily replied "yes" to Janis asking if I wanted to talk about this was in hopes of reconnecting with old friends. If you are reading this and we're old teammates, I'd be happy to hear from you. I want to thank all the individuals who gave me a hand and friendship throughout my time in Scientology, and in equal measure, both to those people who are still involved and no longer involved. Let's get some facts straight! 1. Although the far majority of my time at Portland was an all day and all night every day schedule, it was not all of that time. There was I think about a year or so where i worked a part time schedule on staff. I believe that this was for about a year. I don't recall my schedule. 2. I did not live in the church building that entire time. I think now that only a year or so I lived in the org. Most of the remainder of that time I think that I lived at my grandmother's house. I am pretty sure that I must have justified this through thinking that I did not eat there and the house was fully paid for. I think I was so thoroughly involved in Scientology that hardly a moment's thought was give to the rightness or wrongness of this arrangement. I even remember arranging another staff member living there for some time, perhaps also rent-free. Frankly, I don't remember thanking her for this! She was a wonderful and caring person and I regret my being so wrapped up that I did little to contribute to her personally. I also stayed at least one staff member's house for some time who I can recall (but sense I should not name publicly) and I have a feeling (but not yet any memories) there are others. 3. I did not sell blood plasma through this entire time. There were certainly many times, but it was not throughout the entire time and there were other ways I got food even when not employed off staff pay. At the moment I am not recalling these things but I will edit and update here when I recall or when old friends contact me and remind me. 4. I also had the good fortune of meeting and living with another Scientologist, a woman, for about, I think, a year. During this time period she helped pay the bills as we both were bussing tables at lunch time at a restaurant. We pooled our income to have our own apartment. I won't mention her name here out of respect for her privacy. So, the upshot of all this is there were plenty of kind people that helped me out and no one ordered me to live the sort of life that I did. I don't at all feel a victim or like a martyr to the cause, etc. I hope that all this is clear. I may edit later to make it more sensical. Thank you for your time!

Did you guys know about Waldo's illness where his body kept growing? He continued to grow into the Incredible Hulk. He looked a lot different in the 90s than he did in the Pro TRs film. Great guy. I remember riding to Kirby with him in his Bronco one night and he played the Bob Dylan album "Nashville Skyline" which I had never heard and was blown away. Started my love of Dylan. Despite his size, his evil senior Spike Bush was still able to bring him to tears with his insane verbal abuse. A lot of people have said how horrible Hubbards films were, but I loved the old Pro TRs film with Waldo and Dan. It was hilarious! I am sure the new film is a clinical bore.

I knew Spike only socially, but seemed to be a good guy. I have seen a lot of people (and myself as well, although I think not frequently) behave poorly while on staff. The "tough guy" identity was highly validated in Scientology, and, in particular, in the Sea Org. And it worked at times, particularly on the short term in sort of an emergency drive to have urgency bump up our necessity to get something done. It's a "winning valence" in the SO, but in the long term it was too much. I was never a big fan. I guess not you as well. Sad to hear of what Bob W. had to go through. I thought that the Pro TRs course was Scientology Scripture and am surprised you are saying it is gone! It was still being shown when I left in '04 in tech training in spite of a big percentage of the staff in the film no longer being with us. It was a great film for what it was. How about "SFR" and "CHCC"?

@@OneCharmedLife I totally agree, but I saw Spike push it to a new level several times. Far past what was allowed or even extreme. I could hear a kettle about to boil every time I interacted with Spike, and he was nice to me. Sterling has said positive things about him but another person has been negative about him ( I can't remember who that was). From my view he was psycho. He used to sit at his desk doing nothing all day, singing songs, chattin people up, having a good time, until something came up and he would turn into a volcano... As far as I know they don't show the original films any more but I could be wrong. Anyone know about this??

i'm pretty sure the lady with the scn cross has a youtube channel but i'm wracking my brain to remember the name. i think she used to hang out on doug kramer's channel. i know i saw her somewhere. likely it was doug promoting her channel. the pic was smaller in her icon and i thought it was a "normal" cross, not the scn one. and i had thought she was a never-in. apparently not! will keep looking for her screen name. also, liz ferris was just mentioning her dad worked at delphi and then portland org. that would have been at the beginning of delphi when alan and janet hollander started it. they left from santa clara mission staff and i guess they joined the ED (?) of the sac mission to start it. i didn't catch the whole story, but the keough boys consider that was where they were raised. thomas has been there since day one. (danny's brother). never left! dylan gill's dad has worked there over 40 years. candy mathews was also from santa clara. she went up (i guess) with the hollander's, then came back a few years later. she had a pre-school in palo alto for years and years. then moved it across the bay to milpitas. she died awhile back. her kids might still be in. candy's fb is still up. "in memoriam" mode. delphi was also where alan and karen married. karen was from some podunk town near sac. i never had heard of it and i'm born and raised bay area. guess karen is still in?

45:30 As tedious as the old "star rate checkouts" were, they were similar to oral tests that professors give wannabe graduating university students. Good checkouts ought to have continued, as fast flowing allowed gaming of the understanding. I believe this because when I as the paper pusher cult bureaucrat Course Supervisor at Flag would do my "spot checks" where I asked relevant random "spot checks" of trainees, sort of an oral questioning on the spot of trainees, I found out those that "quickied" their "Fast Flow" status. (In the end of the day though, what defeats Scientology is not having produced "Super Literate" students nor producing "Fast Flow" students, nor all the elaborate Hubbard hurdles for drilling the component parts of doing the Hubbard auditing pseudo-therapy. All of the hurdles Hubbard put in the students' paths to becoming "proficient" at the perfect application of the Hubbard "tech" - quackery - but ultimately it's the "tech" quackery which fails everyone. it's more the "tech" wasn't honestly that effective, since some of the best of the best Scientologists never ever produced genuine "OT" fellow Scientologists using the Hubbard "tech." No "OTs" were ever produced, no one is able to go exterior at will, etc, etc, no telepathic ESP abilities not even the vaunted Ingo Swan, his percentages he himself admits in his own book shows how hit and miss his telepathic "remote viewing" was, it was dismally bad percentage wise. Hubbard's 'tech" suffers from the old adage "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear" problem, That's what betrays everyone. ) I always love interviews with the hardest working well meaning ex staffers. Praise them, and wish they'd put their talents, honestly to other pursuits for the world's benefit.
