For the original movie Herbie was built by the great Max Balchowsky, he's the guy who prepped the movie cars for Bullitt, Vanishing Point and too many other movie cars to list, Max also built one of the greatest road racing cars of all time Old Yeller II, hand built in his garage including the frame Old Yeller II beat every Ferrari, Alfa Romero, Jaguar and every other high end European sports car thrown at it.

Holy Moly, this SCREAMS childhood to me. As a small gearhead with no internet whatsoever, this movie was always on TV and I watched it over and over. Nowadays I have my own classic car, a Chevrolet Opala, very popular here in Brazil, and even being incredibly happy with him, to have a white Beetle as Herbie is still something I would like a lot

The difference between the original Love Bug and this film is the brilliant director in the 1968 film was able to have Herbie show emotion without special fx. This movie lacks good directors and relied on CGI to create impossible movements to show emotion. It loses its suspension of disbelief and makes a subpar film.

This series was my childhood, I own almost every film on BD besides Herbie rides again and this one which I have on DVD (edit: I went on google, turns out it finally got a BD release release 2 years ago, I'm surprised they released this film and still haven't released the 1997 tv movie on BD or DVD, I would kill for an official release of that movie lol) but yeah, while this may not as good as the other movies, its still fun to watch regardless.

if you look at this movie without watching any of the classics like herbie does Baja or Herbie goes bananas, its not a bad movie, they went a little over-the-top with the CGI, and tried to make herbie a bit too eager at times, its not a "bad" movie, but if you've seen the classics, you can tell its an attempt to reboot a loved franchise for a younger generation, so i would say the movie is good if you just want some mindless popcorn flick, but its not great like the classic love bug series, but a passable enjoyable experience none the less, all in all, they could have done worse like a certain movie franchises attempted reboot in 2006

The main reason I didn't like this Herbie as much was because of all of the animation and overly unrealistic CGI. The practical effects cars of old made more sense and effectively conveyed Herbie's emotions.
