Snake bites can be deadly, but luckily we have an incredibly effective treatment in antivenom. So why do thousands still die from snake venom annually? This week, we're slithering our way to the bottom of the antivenom conspiracy!

Ya’ll should do an ep on tuberculosis and have John Green on as a guest. It’s something that needs to be spoken about more.

Luke! Ive worked with a lot of immunologists, the immune system "recognising foreign bodies" is just the automatic chemical response to many chemical and nervous inputs. Tl;wr: more similar to coagulation than to muscle movement in terms of "the brain decided" Basically evolutionarily we couldnt spec into individualised responses to things that are bad for us so antibodies are like the chemical reaction equivalent of saying "good, you" every single time someone asks how you are whether its true or not. This is also why autoimmune diseases are so neatly wrapped under the same category of "idk the immune system freaks out" while being so varied and numerous - the immune system does one thing in response to many a thing, its the friend who always suggests a pocket knife for every problem, for autoimmune sick people the friend would whip out the knife for say a juice box or to carry the groceries with.

Fun venom fact, platypus have venom and each platypus has a different type of venom so we don’t have an effective anti venom for them and apparently the pain for the venom doesn’t fully go away for some people ever so people will sometimes amputate which ever limb gets poised.

"in the case of autoimmune disorders, where they'll start binding to the things that they're not supposed to" i felt this - as someone with a shit ton of autoimmune disorders

Off-topic but I would like to see you guys do an episode on Apollo 13. The way you blend storytelling with scientific facts is so enjoyable (plus the Apollo 13 film is one of my all time favorites).

Have you ever been bitten by a snake? (We know spiders are arachnids, not insects)

As a blood donor, I would be so ready to get a little bit of snake venom into my blood! I gain an immunity to said venom and the people to whom my blood goes gain that too- Wait, would my organs also give immunity to the receiver? (๑•﹏•) If so, wow I could save so many lives. I hope this could become an option in the future!

As an aussie, good - be scared of water, even folk who do it all the time like its nothing still know to be super aware of whats in the water usually over long periods of time or by local council, and still things go wrong 😂

I've never held a snake large enough to bite me (but give me ALL the garter snakes! So cute!) but I wouldn't say no to the opportunity to hold something like a corn snake or a milk snake. I'd rather not hold any type of large constrictor.

For Luke. We don't know nearly all of the ways to make everything. Afaik, the closest thing to what you described--the chemical factory--is the Molecular Foundry at LBNL in California.
