Your air filter was upside down. That extended lip goes on the bottom right side.

question what if you put it in the wrong way reversed? Would the engine run rough ?

Technically, a reversed filter is supposed to cause some restriction to air flow. TBH I don't think it would really be that bad, but I am not an engineer. I am confused as to how the filter went in backwards still allowing the housing to clamp shut. Are you sure it is in backwards?

It wouldn't make much difference in terms of how the engine would run. You're just loosing the bigger surface area that you get on the right side, so the filter would get dirty quicker. The one thing that confuses me is the extended rubber corner area. I can never work out which way around that goes.
