SCION XB P0012 Code VVT Solenoid?

I'm sad to report that the P0012 was that timing gear not the solenoid but at least you get a view of where thing are. Good luck and my P0012 repair cost was $900

Have an '06 Xb Manual with 225K, had the VSC, TRAC OFF, and the CHECK ENGINE lights on for a few months. Didn't paid attention because it was running fine. Emissions was around the corner so went to mechanic to see what could be done to pass emissions. Codes P0012 and P0420 came up. $350 for Camsensor and Converter. Didn't have money at that time. Waited another month to see if I could fix myself and saw your and atiloyalist's video. Helped a lot. Checked the Oil Control Valve first and the thing just snapped in half when I loosened the bolt. OCV $104 at the dealer. Changed myself. Changed oil and oil filter while I was at it. $22 at dealer for 5 quarts, oil filter, and oil plug gasket. Erased codes. Drove 25 miles. Passed Emissions. Didn't know if mechanic know what he was talking about.

Thanks for posting this video. I accidentally broke the connector on my solenoid when I was tightening the alternator belt and my pry bar slipped. Now I have the part on the way and I know how to replace it.

Were you leaking oil after you broke it? I think I did this and oil is getting onto the belt and splattering all over.

Just did the same thing today .. did all the belts and brand new alternator then pried on the to tighten the belt boom broke .. damm

That was the Oil Control Valve you replaced. If you look at your video, just underneath that part you took out, there is a 8 MM HEX head plug. The filter for the Oil Control Valve is in there. You can take it out and clean it. I just did mine. I have 332,000 miles on my XB. My problem is that I am getting a Pinging/Rattling noise when I first take off and in between shifts. Supposedly it's the Oil Control Valve. Well I replaced mine and the noise is still there. I just checked to make sure the new one was working and put 12 volts to it and it does work. So I am still scratching my head. But I wanted to give you a heads up on that filter for the Oil Control Valve. MrRantek24.

What was the cause of the pinging and rattling? Mine is starting to make a rattle in that area.

Hey there. I thought for sure my valves were pinging or rattling. But I did a test. I had the car in drive, held the brake and I floored the gas pedal. You could really hear it pinging/rattling. Then I shut the car off and I took off the belt for the alternator. Started it back up, floored it in drive, and the noise was gone! I had already changed the Alternator, and Water pump. So I went out and measured for a belt that would go from the crank, water pump and alternator, but not the AC PUMP. O'Reileys fixed me right up on the belt. Put it on, did the same test, and the noise was gone!!! I ran it like that all winter. No pinging or rattling. It warmed up here and I put the other belt back on, and my noise has returned. I am going to replace the CLUTCH HUB on the AC Pump. Or maybe just the bearing in it. I have 368,000 miles on my 2006 XB now. Still runs great!! Hope this helps!! MrRantek24.

MrRantek24 Thanks dude, I had a sound similar in the same area but it went away, I thought it was the valves but its gone now. I'm almost at 250,000 miles - same motor and trans and still runs like a champ :)

+MrRantek24 I pulled out that hex head plug today and looked for a filter, but found nothing. How does one clean it? I just saw a hole.

Albert Camus Are you the original owner? Maybe someone else has taken the filter out?? It's hard for me to remember but, I think I had to use needle nose pliers to grab the filter and pull it out. MrRantek24.

On computer show p1656 code I change new sensor but problem not solved my problem was when I connected ocv wire car didt not change gear some time later turn off my engine when I disconnect wire starting well and go some time gear not shift 4th &it will stay &speed meater go high 200+ &rpm&fuel not show properly some time engine turn off ... I have tired which one is problem

I'm having this code on my 07 Yaris is pissing me off can't take it to the dealer because the code hasn't come back and is been a month the only issue I have is that is having a hard time starting like is a Weak start up replaced all coils battery spark plugs code p0012 hasn't come back yet but the hard starting is getting worse any help would be appreciate it?

Got it for 20 bucks... gunna install today. mine runs fine so no recall. code went off n light after I changed the oil... but I figured I replace this too anyway just in case... I'm pushing 220,000 miles on my 05 manual scion xb. #TMNTXB

My 06 Xa is running good, but had a positive fuel run of 12. [The engine runs lean]. My smoke detector shows smoke lightly blowing out this vvt control valve . I removed it, but it is much different inside. I think mine is broken and in 2 pieces. I can remove the pot metal solenoid. [I replaced an oring at engine surface level]. Still smokes. I'm sure the smoke from the tester is from the vvt valve and not the intake manifold, because i placed cardboard between the vvt and manifold. Do these vvt solenoids split or break?

It wasn't my camshaft gear I took out the oil control valve and it was bent I bought a new one and installed runs better and I'm not having any more start up problems either

had same code on and off intermittent check engine poo12 code. Took the oil screen out it was clean. I found out the little niple didn't hold on to the plug so I replaced the screen and fixed the problem.

That's not the right part number for the car. Should be 917-020 or 916-940, both Dorman part numbers

I have the 05" xB I just had this replaced at a shop. Cost $200sumthing and for their sensor add 95$ ugh! LoL I wasn't going to do it myself though cuz I'm lazy

I just encountered this problem on my xB, code P0012. Two quick questions, to inspect the oil control valve solenoid, do you need to drain the oil first? And do you know the part numbers?

Ouch....IF your longtime shop mechanic charged you 800, I guess the dealer is going to want around 1500 $ since they will be using expensive dealer parts and more per hour labor. Might be worth it since dealer mechanics usually have done this job many time before on your model car. Just hate when mechanics diagnose wrong problem and u get stuck with expensive parts u do not need

no it was his timing gear either is the gear or the sensor mine ended up being the sensor 70 dollars on amazon it usually gets damaged when the serpentine belt gets replaced mine was bent lol
