It was very helpful man! I'm going to be putting a rebuilt head on my 05 civic hybrid. I've worked with timing belts before, but never timing chains. So I had no idea how the tensioner worked until watching this video... thanks! Just gathering bits and pieces from KZbin, which is allowing me to feel a little more confident with this project.

Great vid man it was extremely helpful. Issue I'm having is the motor started making a chattering sound. At 1st I looked to see of it was the wager pump. Took the belt off and ran the motor with no water pump and sound is still there ad definitely sounds like it's coming from the timimg cover. Motor has exactly 200k on it right now so I'm guessing the TCT has lived out its duty and needs to be replaced.

Hi there, Just wondering what was the symptoms that led you for this fix? Chattering noises? I am trying to figure it out it it is the timing chain for mine. Thanks. Good video.

do you recall if there was a chatter before the tensioner was replaced?

Are you saying you need to R&R the tensioner? or a modification to the existing part?

Have to do this repair soon, thanks for the help. I may have some questions for you coming up soon. With the tensioner completely in (with the most play) are you able to just slip out the chain from the intake camshaft sprocket? If so, I think i'll just have someone hold the the tensioner all the way in while i take the camshaft out.

I removed the chain from the crank-end. the service manual claims the chain can be removed at the exhaust cam. Check techinfo.toyota.com/techInfoPortal/appmanager/t3/ti for info.

How long did this repair take to complete?

How hard is it to replace the timing chain tensioner for a 2008 Scion XB ? Mechanics want to charge me an arm and a leg. What do I have to remove first?

You'll need to remove the valve cover, accessory belts, crankshaft pulley, water pump, crankshaft position sensor, and timing chain cover. It gets pretty tight when unbolting the timing chain cover as the frame interferes with many tools. Probe around with what you have and see if your tools will work before attempting. Also, you'll need new water-pump o-rings and the gasket since they are not reusable. The timing cover will need prior RTV removed and reapplied. I believe Toyota offers 3-day unlimited online access to the factory service manual for $25 (techinfo.toyota.com) which will guide you through the process. I'd guess a professional could probably do this in 4-hours.

So do you have to pull the timing cover to remove the tensioner?
@jsedillo822 жыл бұрын
Yes, the timing cover must come off.

helpful! but I'm having an issue, I cant get it to re release---like to ratchet OUT again. the chain is loose now, alldata is no help.

If the tensioner lever is held in the down position, it will lock the piston in place and the piston will neither move forward nor backward. Pulling the lever upward will unlock the piston for movement. If the lever is allowed to move freely, it should ratchet the piston. Good luck to you.

I got it, had to resort to taking off the timing cover. Oil varnish built up on the end of the tensioner piston, when it was pushed in this varnish held the piston from being released. I just replaced the tensioner. Now I'm waiting on the two oil pump o-rings.

No, that side effect was not encountered.

Timing chain and NOT a belt? Interesting.

I has changed the tensioner but the error code P0012 still on:(
@jsedillo825 жыл бұрын
Might be your VVT solenoid. This device controls oil flow to the VVT actuator/sprocket.

thanks for reply, the engine light P0012 after driving 400~500 mile will automatic off then 50-100 mile on again, any idea? my car 2006 Scion XA. if I unplug VVT solenoid connector, the error code is P0010.
