One of the most mesmerizing things to do at night is watch bats hunt insects. I live on a farm in Kentucky and during summer I like to watch big brown bats swoop and dive at insects flying around my telephone pole. They are unbelievably fast and agile- they seem to teleport in and out of existence because they are so hard to follow with the human eye.

I love snakes and bats. In younger days when I had just moved from home I was working at a grocery store. They found a hole outside the building that led to the back room and sealed it off during the daylight. Bit of a mistake that. When evening came the store was flooded with bats who had found their previous exit blocked. :p My son came in to watch the part about the snake and was quiet until the end but then he asked me - "Why does she have the monkey from the Nazca Lines on her shirt?" I love those little so proud moments. :D - Heidi

I live in Victoria, Australia. Big fruit bats are common place here, swarms flying over the cities of Melbourne or Geelong is a regular thing near botanical gardens. Straggling out of the swarm, some individual bats just kinda roost in trees in peoples back yards. I quite often have a bat living out the back of my house. It's totally awesome to see it gliding around at night!

I'm suddenly reminded of how in my hometown (San Antonio, TX) the bats would be out and about by dusk, and every so often in the summer there would be a few swooping down and diving to catch up mosquitos right above the asphalt of my street. I was walking around once and actually saw them do it. One actually almost touched my head, it got so close. That's how I first spotted them doing that, now that I think about it; I felt the air being pushed by its wings on my head.

Bats are creepy, bats are scary, Bats do not seem sanitary; Bats in dismal caves keep cozy, Bats remind us of Lugosi; Bats have webby wings that fold up, Bats from ceilings hand down rolled up; Bats when flying undismayed are, Bats are careful--bats use radar; Bats at night time at their best are, Bats by Batman unimpressed are. (A poem I learned over forty years ago from a Mad magazine publication. And yes, I know it's really sonar they use, not radar.)

I hate to be a stickler, but technically bats use sonar, not radar... Radar bounces radio waves (as opposed to sound waves) off surfaces, and to my knowledge bats don't produce directed radio pulses. Fun rhyme, though.

Love bats~get distressed every time I hear them linked to Ebola, because that could lead to people advocating the eradication of bats, which of course would only exacerbate problems of malaria, but people...(Yes, I realize that's a problem in Africa, not Montana, but any more demonizing of bats is too much already.) Great video, as usual.
@John-iv2oz10 жыл бұрын
Steve, Malaria is a problem in many southern States here in the US. I live in California and vector control out here is always testing for things like malaria and west nile that is transmitted via mosquito bites. More bats means less mosquitoes.
@juststeveschannel10 жыл бұрын
I also live in California. While an occasional case of malaria appears in the U.S., they are so rare that the disease is still classed as "eliminated" here, as it has been since 1951. When it does crop up, it is generally sourced from people who have recently traveled to endemic areas. West Nile is the much greater cause for concern here. I know a little bit about malaria, having contracted my case while in a teaching fellowship in Nigeria. It isn't much fun. But yeah, more bats is definitely a good thing.
@Qermaq10 жыл бұрын
Bats can carry eboila, should people lie about that? Anyway, sane people see that malaria is a much, much bigger risk than ebola in the US.

Bats are so freakin' cool. I vividly remember watching the night summer sky in Denmark fill with bats out in the countryside when I was little. And the summer before last I rescued a tiiiny baby bat, I'm fairly certain he was a common pipistrelle. Momma bat must have dropped him or something, he was sitting on a tree root in the middle of the day, I came across him doing a biology field course. I carried him around in a beanie to keep him warm all day, fed him some sugar water when we got back to base camp, and the next day our professor drove him over to a wildlife rescue :)

I love those snakes! In Georgia, we call them king snakes mostly. Beautiful creatures, very docile. I've had to stop people from killing them many times.... sad, people see a snake of any kind and want to kill it. King/milk snakes eat venomous snakes, so they are more beneficial even left alive.
