About a year ago, my nieces hair started falling out in huge clumps, (which scared the crap out of us) and it took her doctor a while to understand what was going on, but he finally figured out that it was a zinc deficiency. She started taking zinc supplements, and almost immediately her hair started to grow back.

Thanks for talking about alopecia areata. I've had it since I was a kid (I always have one or two bald spots coming and going) and used to be really embarrassed about it. I'm cool with it now, but it's still nice to see it talked about. Keep up the good work!

I recently had that on my beard. There were two small bold patches. First white hair started growing where the patches were. Then they turned black. I was so relieved, because they looked terrible and I had to shave my beard every day. EDIT: Something shady going on in my body LOL I better go see a doctor.

Back in the 70s I had a family friend who was a well-known and respected cosmetologist. After decades at his profession, he had noticed some women had hair conditions which, to him, indicated a health issue. Since he was not a physician, he could not diagnose. However, he predicted with a high rate of accuracy people with heart, liver, kidney and other organ problems that were later diagnosed by a physician and treated. Over the years I often thought doctors should study this more as it could very well prove to be a useful diagnostic tool in early identification of certain diseases. This is the closest I have seen or heard of this since that time. Now, almost 50 years later, this video is the closest I have seen to studying hair as a diagnostic tool but the video doesn't seem to cover changes in hair as symptoms of organ disease/disfunction. Perhaps there are some doctors who have studied this and use it to diagnose and test for hidden diseases. I'd be curious to know if anyone else knows about this.

I have alopecia areata, just one of my autoimmune disorders (in a family full of them).. I wanted to point out to anyone else dealing with this that mine, anyway, responds very well to treatment. A dermatologist can inject a corticosteroid into your scalp (yeah, it kinda hurts, but not too bad) all over the spot, and it grows back. So keep a relationship with a dermatologist so they can slip you in when you need it! I'm convinced autoimmune disorders can be exacerbated by stress. Mine is pretty intermittent, so I've noticed it showing up mostly when I've been under a lot of stress - that's when I've had the biggest spots, anyway. My first bald spot appeared as I was about to graduate from college into an uncertain future...and the second (a rather large one) during the end of my master's program (which was highly stressful due to a thesis committee member dropping out a month before my defense). When I got accepted into the PhD program, I bought a hat. Weirdly, I did fine toward the end of my PhD program. (Now I know why that degree comes with a funny hat...) But it's been less severe yet more frequent since - often little spots around my hairline. It'll look like a hairdresser accidentally shaved to far into the hairline. Those I ignore and let pass on their own, but it can take a while.

How about early graying of hairs?
@zacharymli
@zacharymli 5 жыл бұрын
conyo985 Prematurely grey hair occurs due to severe, prolonged sleep deprivation. If you’re not chronically living on 3-4 hours sleep a night, it may be due to sleep apnea (even though you feel like you’re sleeping, your body isn’t functionally sleeping), or stress - which may also be causing grey hair due to messing up your sleep. Once you reestablish a habit of getting adequate sleep again, your hair will stop greying. That, or it’s genetic. Which hell, maybe you all have chronic sleep issues. Regardless, healthy sleep will do wonders for your mental, physical and emotional well-being, so it’s worth a try.

Thanks SciShow for talking about alopecia areata. I have alopecia universalis which is a form of AA with total hair loss over the entire body. AA is one of the least understood and under-researched autoimmune disorders out there since there is no physical pain/restrictions. However, the negative psychological and societal effects can lead many of us to develop mental illnesses among other side effects. Any coverage on our disorder is appreciated as we collectively are trying to create awareness to fast-track research and clinical trials. Woohoo!

I've heard of studies where they've found the majority of food allergies and many digestive diseases (IBS, Celiac Disease, etc) are falsely self diagnosed. I had a roommate who claimed to be deathly allergic to all seafood, she ate some homemade thai food (that had a ton of fish sauce and oyster sauce in it, plus meatballs that had shrimp) and she was absolutely fine. She found out that some stir fry she loved had fish sauce and only after she found out about the fish sauce suddenly she "felt really crummy". Same goes for some conditions like ADD/ADHD and dyslexia, I've met quite a few people who claim to have that without ever getting a real test on it all because they read some symptoms online. My dad claims ADD and dyslexia whenever anyone tries to get him to do boring things like paperwork but he has zero problem with spending hours on Facebook reading posts and conspiracy theories.

Really depends on the person. Waardenberg syndrome can cause that but it's fairly rare. Some people may be secretly dying it, using too much dry shampoo or showering after the showerhead has been bleached lol. Even too much laundry detergent used on bed sheets can cause hair discoloration.

That's what I thought too Maybe they are dying it, but when I got close to someone with that condition, the strands are individually white, like there's patch of black hair with white hair interspersed, sort of like salt and pepper.

@@marvyricafrente8754 Sounds like vitiligo? Might just not have spread yet. Also are these people Caucasian and very tanned looking? I started going bald as a teenager thanks to chemo (sometimes hair doesnt come back, comes back a different color/texture, or comes back super thin or patchy). I figured i could either go broke spending money on fancy treatments or start weightlifting and try to go for the "mister clean look" or at least the "Jean-Luc Picard look". I at least still have a decent beard, wich is nice. I desperately dont want to get fat and look like Homer or a neck beard. You dont really need to be super buff, at least as long as your fairly fit looking its easy to go for the Jean-Luc Picard.

I complained about hair loss to my doctor and dermatologist for 9 years. My hair didn’t stop falling out when I was pregnant. In January 2020, it got so bad I had a bald spot big enough to see from across the room. I saw a KZbin video about iodine deficiency symptoms. I started taking kelp pills after that. On day 3, my hair stopped falling out. If I go more than 2 days without taking it; my hair starts falling out again.

Okay, yeah, but what about your hair fibers getting thinner, or your hair receding or becoming less pigmented, due to vitamin or nutrient deficiencies? It's literally the most widely spread cause of one's hair fluctuating in one aspect or another, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that eating right helps your hair grow better, while eating crappy causes it to slack off.

I have dandruff. It started around 12 years of age. I've tried all kinds of dandruff shampoos none work. I have to only shampoo my hair once a week sometimes twice. I use shampoos for Africans because they're not as drying on my scalp. I also have to oil my hair once a week to two weeks. My son whose reaching 12 years old just developed dandruff too. I think its a hormonal thing rather than a fungus thing as you mentioned. Why would it only start around the time hormones change in a person's body? I'm so tired of dealing with dandruff.

I've got male pattern hair loss aka androgenetic alopecia meaning it's a genetic defect/trait causing hair follicles to drastically shorten their growth cycle in reaction to androgens. Women can get this too usually after menopause when estrogen levels decrease. I do hope this genetic defect can be fixed in the future using gene editing. Interestingly, only the hair on the scalp are affected by this genotype.

What causes hair to not grow at all? I had my hair cut almost 10 years ago and it is only about 2" longer than it was then. Yes, I do tie my hair back but it isn't a "style" choice. My hair is so fine (a genetic thing, my father had the same thing), and it is because it is so short it blows around and gets in my eyes. By short I mean maybe 5" in the front and 7" in the back. Even my leg hair doesn't grow much, I only "have" to shave about every three or four months. This I don't mind at all but I do like playing with shaving cream - chuckle.

I learned a crapton about telogen effluvium after I started losing clumps of hair a few weeks after recovering from dengue fever. I know it's just hair and that it grows back, but suddenly losing that much hair so quickly is really distressing. It's been two years since the rapid hairloss stopped, but I feel like my hair has not gone back to how thick it was before TE.

I had adult cradle cap!!! It was so weird. I think it could've been partially because I'm a model, and people are always putting weird products in my hair that I have no control over. I also traveled a lot and lots of different phs in the water etc, i suppose could contribute to the microbiome. I also just think it's important to scrub your scalp a bit with your nails, I read somewhere that this causes irritation so I stopped scrubbing my scalp with my nails, just my fingertips, and the buildup became more severe. Sometimes you gotta just dig in there!! Hah.
